Zootopia: Tail of Two contains tropes of:

  • The Alcatraz: The story beings with a Spider-monkey named Arachnid breaking out a lioness named Ironclaw from a prison called Elk-atraz.
  • Almost Kiss: Nick tries give a kiss to Judy, but he passes out from the medication before he could go through.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: What happens to the Predators of Zootopia that get hypnotized by Arachnid’s magic medallion. This ends up happening to Charlie.
  • Breather Episode: After a suspenseful chapter of saving mammals from a massive falling bridge and Judy’s brush with death, the next two chapters involve Nick and Judy staying in Finnick’s Van and meeting Nick’s mom while Judy’s leg heals.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Sven and Charlie.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Sven Jingle, a famous songwriter of Zootopia fits this trope.
  • Continuation: The story takes place months after the events of the movie.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Ironclaw was bullied as a child for having her father walk out on her mother and having a prey step-father.
  • A Day in the Limelight: We learn what Finnick has been up to since Nick became a cop, and that he’s trying to get a start in a music career.
  • Disney Villain Death: Ironclaw falls to her death after having another apparent Arachnid hallucination.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Nick and Judy got Bellwether to cooperate with them by threatening to give her a cell mate, a black wolf named Wade “Frothy” Jones. Who ends up having a bigger role in the next story.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: On a much smaller scale. Ironclaw’s main objective is to throw the city of Zootopia into so much chaos, that both the society and the physical city destroy themselves.
  • Given Name Reveal: An old wolf guard that used to look after Ironclaw revealed to Nick and Judy that Ironclaw’s real name is Lucy Lionheart
  • Half-Sibling Angst: Ironclaw resents both her half-brother Mayor Lionheart and their father.
  • Heroic BSoD: Nick has this once he has a muzzle strapped to his face. This also happens to Sven when Charlie is hypothesized into being a savage animal.
  • Hypno Pendulum: Ironclaw gives Arachnid a magic ancient artifact that is basically this.
  • Interspecies Romance: For Sven Jingle, a male reindeer and Charlie Spotwood, a female cheetah, and near the end of the story, Nick, a male fox and Judy, a female rabbit. Ironclaw, a female lion and Arachnid, a male spider-monkey though that didn’t end as happily.
  • Jealous Romantic Witness: Although there is no real flirting, both Nick and Judy are like this to one another when they hang out with Winter and Gideon respectively.

  • Meeting-the-Parents Sequel: The first time we see Nick and Judy is when Judy takes Nick to Bunnyburrow and meets Stu and Bonnie. In a later chapter, Judy is introduced to Nick’s mother, Amelia and the grave of Nick’s father, Max.
  • Mythology Gag: Nick once had a childhood dream of owning an amusement park, this is a reference to the infamous Wilde Times amusement park Nick owned in the early drafts of Zootopia.
  • Original Flavour: Many fans of have commented how the plot and characters in this story fit the world of Zootopia to a T.
  • Red Herring: Percy Sprintly, Mayor Lionheart’s new rabbit Assistant Mayor. Judy thought that he was Ironclaw’s new accomplice. Only to reveal that it was Nick, who would later turn out to be a Fake Defector.
  • Sanity Slippage: Happens to Ironclaw after she kills Arachnid.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Judy has said and thought this in the times when an Otter waitress, Finnick and her loud neighbors refer to her and Nick as a couple.
  • Shout-Out: Sven Jingle is a reindeer, named after the reindeer in Frozen. Finnick mentions that one of their cons involved Nick dressing up like a fortune teller and scamming a rich lion out of his money.
  • Wedding Finale: The story ends with Nick and Judy attending Flash and Pricilla’s wedding with Nick being the priest.

It takes three contains tropes of:

  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Ronno’s plan involves having predators infected with Night Howlers, that they infected with by the way, to attack the mammals at Gazelle’s upcoming concert so that they can use the predators with the shock collars that they also made to stop the former.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Although nothing is shown, it was made pretty clear that Ronno was brutally mauled by Moriarty, who was under the control of the very same collar that Ronno invented.
  • Filler Arc: One chapter has Nick, Judy and Ronno bust an illegal honey racking circuit that is in no way involved with the main case. The white bear named Casper Barret who was making the illegal honey however, does show up later and assists in the climax.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Sven is implied to be this and this also ironic given how he is a famous songwriter.
  • How Dad Met Mom: Amelia tells the story how she met Nick’s father and Judy tells the story of how her parents met.
  • Animal Weapon: Aaron’s Master plan is to use shock collars that contain the Night Howlers on predators and sell them. They also stole the remaining antidote so that Zootopia wouldn’t have any other option.
  • I Am Not Your Father: A non-dramatic variant as a baby sugar-glider named Suzy that Nick and Judy have been looking after during the story calls Nick “dada” at one point.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Nick does this when he comments how absurd it is that rich mammals have a whole floor to themselves in one apartment.
Nick: I swear, Carrots, it's almost like we're in some lazy crime/romance story and the writer doesn't know what they're doing!
  • Mythology Gag: The evil plan involves using shock collars on predators, this is a reference an infamous old concept from Zootopia’s early draft. When Nick goes feral, Instead of attacking Judy, he ends up protecting her. This is a reference to an early draft of Zootopia’s climax.
  • Parental Substitute: Nick and Judy become a temporary version of this to Suzy after her mother Eleanor, the sugar-glider scientist who created the Night Howler antidote, was kidnapped. Nick’s mother, Amelia also helps out.
  • Redemption Quest: Bellwhether goes on one after she contemplated her actions and is now living with predators. They help out in the climax. Bellwheter even gets Aaron to expose his evils plans with the asylum’s secretary cameras.
  • Shippers On Deck: Nick and Judy found out from a wolf officer named Wilford that the entire precinct has made a betting pool for their relationship and are current making bets on when they’ll get married.
  • Shout-Out: There are two otter sisters named Anna and Elsa, A wolf named Moriarty and a hyena named Ed. Illegal Honey is called Winnie. There’s even a chapter titled “Part of your world.” Finnick has a band mate that’s a platypus named Perry Agent. Judy has a great grandfather named Roger. Lastly, there’s a deer named Aaron Ronno.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: When Nick was a child, he hung out with a gang of predators called ‘The Pack;’ which consists of a wolf named Moriarty, a Hyena named Ed, short for Edith, and a silver fox named Rey, all of whom did questionable things. Nick gets out once they all violently beat up the scout troop that muzzled him.
  • Wedding Finale: Much like the last story’s ending, the final chapter is Nick and Judy’s wedding with Flash being the priest.
