Fanfic / The coming of the True Heroes

Go To

They were chosen to be the Heroes of this world. They were given weapons with unlimited strength and potential. They thought they were going to have fun. That they were now living in a game they enjoyed in their previous life. Then why were there individuals who constantly proven themself to be better than them, and why didn't they fit into the fantasy setting of the game.

The coming of the True Heroes by Rougedragon is a Ben 10/The Rising of the Shield Hero crossover featuring the common setup of someone taking Naofumi's place as the shield hero, in this case, a nineteen-year-old Ben Tennyson. It's also notable in that it serves as a distant sequel the authors other crossover between Ben 10 and Lyrical Nanoha, found here, as Ben is accompanied by his cousin Nanoha and her friend Fate.

The coming of the True Heroes provides examples of:

  • Crack Fic: By the authors own admission, with the story being told solely from the perspectives of the Shield Hero cast.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Word of God has stated that this is pretty much the premise of the fic, with the protagonists doling them out quite frequently.
    • After the trio show up before the King in the midst of Malty's 'accusations' they bind all the guards (and Motoyasu when he attempts to intervene) within seconds. Nanoha and Fate do so with magic, while Ben does so using vines from his shield.
    • Shadows from the Church of the Three Heroes attempted to ambush Ben, Nanoha and Fate individually, and are effortlessly subdued each time.
    • It is stated that an unknown group, which the next chapter indicates consisted of Rex Salazar, the Ninja of Norrisville, several Symphogear wielders, and Nero, inflicted one on the guards attacking Lurolona village, and without killing any of them to boot. The King is surprised to hear that the worst injuries sustained were some broken bones.
  • Evil Is Petty: Malty tried to have Nanoha and Fate captured and sold into slavery not only because they are allies to the shield hero, but because they're prettier than her.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Ben, Nanoha and Fate are all nineteen here, and allude to the fact that they have faced plenty of world ending threats before.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Ben's attitude regarding getting the shield, noting that just because it doesn't have any offensive abilities doesn't mean its useless. Makes sense when you realize how many aliens with 'useless' powers he's unlocked by this point.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: The Church shadow sent to spy on the trio gets caught by what seems to be Pesky Dust, giving Ben a goldmine of information about the Church of the Three Heroes.
  • Only Sane Man: Ren is the only one of the other Three Heroes who accepts that Malty lied.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Ben alone would have qualified for this, being an experienced superhero armed with the Omnitrix, but Nanoha and Fate accompanying him throws an even bigger wrench into the mix, especially given what their magic makes them capable of compared to that found in Melromarc.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Nanoha and Ben are cousins.
  • Serial Killer: Ren realizes that Malty is essentially this, having made several False Rape Accusation's before, using her fathers influence to have them found guilty and thus giving them the death penalty.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Once it became clear Malty was lying, Ren straight up just walked out of the trial, not even bothering to hear the verdict of a obvious Kangaroo Court.
  • Tranquil Fury: Sums up Ben, Nanoha and Fates attitude when appearing before the King after Malty's False Rape Accusation. The three are quiet, never raise their voices, yet their tone of voice is seething and they give Motoyasu a collective Death Glare that (in his own words) 'feels like being stared down by three apex predators' when he parrots the accusations.
    • From the same scene, Bens words to Aultcry after the latter threatens to have Nanoha and Fate executed merely for being his companions are full of this, delivering a death threat in a cold tone, while holding the King in a headlock.
  • Wham Episode: Chapter 5, The First Wave is significantly darker than the any of the previous ones, featuring the first wave from a young Raphtalia's perspective and features several other franchises being introduced to the story.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Ben, Nanoha and Fate call out the other heroes for demanding compensation immediately upon arrival before agreeing to help anyone. They agree that they need resources to accomplish their objectives but point out the 'heroes' were acting more like mercenaries than proper heroes in doing so.
    • For a very loose definition of 'hero', but the trio call out the king for summoning all four cardinal heroes behind the rest of the worlds back, potentially risking starting a war, especially when they're already dealing with the waves of calamity.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Nanoha and Fate retain their Devices and TSAB style magic, which is vastly different from how magic operates in the Shield Hero world, catching many people off guard.
