Stinkbug the Unwanted
is a fanfic in The Weedverse by Kudzuhaiku. It depicts the adventures of Stinkbug after he is thrown out of the Changeling hives for, well, stinking. Abandoned to wander, he encounters a harpy named Celaeno, who quite likes his smell, as well as several other familiar characters from the Weedverse.
Stinkbug the Unwanted contains examples of:
- Baby Factory: This was intended to be Stinkbug's purpose in the hive before his condition made that impossible.
- Bizarre Alien Reproduction: Apparently changeling biology resembles that of seahorses; changeling females lay eggs inside the male who will fertilise them, then bring them to term.
- The Cavalry: After Stinkbug, Celaeno and Hachikō get captured by harpies, Yam and Azure bring Twilight Sparkle, Tarnish and Maud to rescue them.
- Curiosity Causes Conversion: Part of what turns Stinkbug to the heroic side is curiosity about whether what Queen Chrysalis told him about ponies was true.
- Elemental Embodiment: Crackle Jackals appear to be this for lightning.
- Everything Trying to Kill You: Celaeno had this problem before she met Stinkbug. Afterwards, nothing wants to get near the pair.
- Fantastic Racism: Both Stinkbug and Celaeno have problems with this, because they're from traditionally Always Chaotic Evil races. In fact, the actions of Braeburn (throwing a rock at Celaeno) leads to Celaeno getting a nearly severe head injury.
- First Time Feeling: Stinkbug has a mild case of this once he no longer has the Hive Mind to regulate his emotions.
- God Save Us from the Queen!: How Stinkbug comes to see Queen Chrysalis.
- Go Through Me: Hachikō and Stinkbug defend Celaeno against her sisters.
- Hive Mind: There's a brief mention that Changelings have one as Stinkbug is cut off from it.
- My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Celaeno doesn't think it's right to eat things that can talk back, unlike her sisters.
- No-Sell: Poison darts can't penetrate Changeling chitin.
- Ship Tease: Somewhat, between Stinkbug and Celaeno.
- Smells Sexy: Stinkbug's perpetual odor is described as smelling like carrion. Celaeno, as a predator, thinks the smell's great. Everyone else doesn't.
- Super Spit: Part of Stinkbug's power set.
- Tears of Joy: Celaeno, after Twilight gets her and Stinkbug Equestrian citizenship.
- The Worf Effect: This is the first time we directly see Hachikō fight, and he is brought down very quickly by a barrage of poison darts.
- Token Heroic Orc: Stinkbug develops into one after he begins questioning what Chrysalis told him and gets some encouragement off Celaeno, who is also trying to, even if she doesn't really understand what being 'good' means.
- Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Stinkbug wonders why Queen Chrysalis didn't just kill him and repurpose his biomass. It's actually because she thinks that he might at least inconvenience someone else before he dies, but she doesn't tell Stinkbug that.
- You No Take Candle: When Stinkbug is starving he starts talking this way. Justified, as being extremely hungry messes with his mind, leading to stunted, slurred speech.
