Fanfic / Sleepless Domain Expanded Universe

Go To

This is a disambiguation page for the entire Expanded Universe. Avoid linking here unless you mean to refer to the universe at large. If the link that brought you here mentioned any particular series (other than a one-shot), and not the universe as a whole, please redirect it to one of the individual work pages listed below.

Sleepless Domain is a webcomic. At maximum, it publishes two pages a week. This makes it highly subject to Webcomic Time, and it has therefore cultivated a strong fandom to fill in the gaps.

The earliest groundwork for the fan EU started in 2018, with the Umbra Rising TTRPG — a hack of Magical Burst created by Parataxis, ran by Cirdain. However, it didn't truly kick off until July 2020, when the askblog Magical Girl Interview Network was created as a way to showcase the fandom's lesser-known OCs. This started a trend to try and fit different authors' OCs into the same universe, which resulted in the current EU.

A big part of the EU's structure is the distinction between works that can fit into the canon without modification, and works that run the risk of being contradicted by the comic as a result of doing additional Worldbuilding. Authors make an effort to avoid letting worldbuilding (W) fics cross over with no-conflict (NC) fics beyond plausibly deniable cameos.

The universe as a whole and the one-shots provide examples of:

  • Ascended Extra: Many characters are "background character adoptions," or designs that appeared as background characters in Sleepless Domain proper and were fleshed out into full characters by the EU. Among the more famous examples are Team Rush.
  • The Berserker: Desdemona.
  • Good-Guy Bar: Mama Maho's, a magical girl-only diner run by retired magical girl Molly Maho and her family. It's located in the NNE sector of the city, situated within walking distance of Future's Promise, a major public transit station, and Team Courier's base.
  • Meaningful Name: A tradition that carries over from the source material. Nearly all magical girls have names that are related to their powers.
    • Deconstructed in the case of Olivia Smith/Power Weapon. Her parents assigned her the name "Omnipotence" in the hopes of creating the second coming of the Founder; the powers she actually got (summoning/fabrication of improvised weapons through her sleeves) were completely unrelated. The name she ultimately chose is also unrelated (since she chose it after she aged out).
  • One-Gender School: Founder's Blessing, the Foundationist magical girl school.
  • Pseudo-Canonical Fic: The NC canonicity class, comprising those fics that have a practically zero chance of being later contradicted by Cube; by contrast with the W class which are those that introduce elements likely to be contradicted (such as the mechanics of a magical girl power transfer or Foundationist beliefs and schooling).
