Rise of the Save-Ums is a Parody Fic of The Save-Ums!, first published on October 7th, 2020, written by NoonboryKedabory, and hosted on FanFiction.Net.
In this story, four teens (Rosie MacPherson, Tom Smith-Houston, Jackson Hemingway, and Alexa Clowater) and two of their siblings (Max Clowater and Ben MacPherson) are pulled from their generic lives into a strange world, where they are forced into the roles of the various Save-Ums. Rise of the Tropes:
- Affectionate Parody: While the fic maliciously mocks high school movies tropes, it does pay genuine homage to the source material.
- Baby See, Baby Do: Mocked:"Film," said Ben, because in media babies can only communicate through repeating random words that older characters say.
- Better than a Bare Bulb: This fic is full of self-awareness, including lines like "exposition trumps logic" and characters pointing out deviations from the source material.
- Cuteness Proximity: All six of the Fake-Ums fawn over the Puffs when they find them.
- Drives Like Crazy: Jackson likes to drive the Zoomer as fast as possible.
- Edible Theme Naming: Mocked; Max laughs at Alexa for her codename, Noodle, and Jackson (Custard) grumbles about being named after a dessert that no one likes.
- Five-Token Band: Rosie and Ben are South Asian, Max is trans, Alexa is a lesbian, Tom is white, and Jackson is black.
- Gender Flip: The human equivalents of Foo (female) and Noodle (male) have both had their genders flipped.
- Have I Mentioned I Am Gay?: Used with Alexa's blunt coming-out in the first chapter.
- Queer Establishing Moment: Parodied: in "The Exposition", Alexa randomly brings up that she's a lesbian. Jackson points out how out of left field that is, and she responds that if she hadn't admitted it now, she would've had to wait until five minutes before the ending credits.
- Related in the Adaptation: In this fic, Max and Alexa, the human versions of Foo and Noodle are brother and sister.
- Similar Squad: The point of the new Save-Ums (later dubbed the Fake-Ums) is that they're dressed and treated like the Save-Ums, but they aren't the Save-Ums; something they frequently gripe and angst about.
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Mr. Randall gives a talk like this to Alexa in the first chapter.
