A fanfic that diverges from Season 2 episode 20 of Gundam 00; in this story Anew is able to fight off Ribbons Almark's control for a split second, causing Setsuna's shot to hit her sword arm rather than the torso. This results in Anew surviving her canon death, and the story follows how the rest of Season 2 is changed with Anew's survival.

You can trust that Renewing Trust shows examples of the following:

  • A God Am I: Ribbons has this attitude, just like in canon.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Ribbons is already a monster in canon, but here he gets an additional crime in trying to take control of Anew during the climax specifically so that he can make her kill her friends.
  • The Atoner: Anew is desperate to make up for her actions in service to the Innovators.
  • Babies Ever After: It's hinted this may be the case with Lyle and Anew further down the road; according to Tieria and Regene Ribbons designed Anew to pass for human, which means that her reproductive organs are fully intact and capable of carrying a pregnancy to term.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Ribbons tries this with Anew in the climax, failing only because of Setsuna's intervention.
  • Broken Pedestal: Anew goes from viewing Ribbons as god to outright hating him.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Anew ultimately asks Tieria to make her mortal so that she can spend her life with Lyle.
  • Brutal Honesty: Setsuna says quite bluntly that he fully planned to kill Anew when he fired. Ironically this is what saves Anew from being executed, since it raises enough doubts about her culpability when she attacked Lyle that they're willing to hear her out.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Lyle is openly attracted to Anew and doesn't bother to hide it; that said, he still gracefully accepts her decision not to get married because she's not ready.
  • Demonic Possession: Ribbons does this to Anew in Chapter 1 and attempts to repeat the process in Chapter 6.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Anew and Lyle have to overcome great odds but they are able to have a life together (with there even being implications that they can have a family.)
  • Easily Forgiven: Played with. Lyle and Mileina forgive Anew easily, as does Setsuna. Others (like Feldt and Soma) are much more hostile, and in Feldt's case it takes her seeing Anew struggling to fight off Ribbons' brainwashing to finally forgive her.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The entire premise is that Anew is able to fight off Ribbon's control long enough to slow down, causing Setsuna to shoot her sword arm rather than her torso. This allows Anew to live past her canon death.
  • Heroic Willpower: How Anew is able to regain control in order to avoid her canon death; she also displays it when Ribbons tries to possess her again, holding out against his attempt for ten minutes despite being in extreme agony the entire time.
  • Inspector Javert: Feldt is this for Anew, refusing to trust her when she comes back. Ultimately subverted when Feldt sees Anew trying to fight off Ribbon's brainwashing in the climax
  • Kick the Dog: Ribbons not only tries to force Anew back under his control during the final battle, he also tells her he plans to make her kill her friends.
  • Mind Rape: Ribbons does this to Anew in the final battle, failing only because Setsuna intervenes.
  • Real After All: Feldt has this reaction when she sees Anew visibly struggling to throw off Ribbons' brainwashing.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Tieria mentions that Hilling is trapped within Veda; Ribbons is as well, ensuring he can never hurt Anew again.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: The entire point of the story is that Anew survives her canon death.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: The entire story can be seen as one for Anew; she has to overcome a great deal but she and Lyle are able to have the happy ending that canon denied them. In the follow up story it's even revealed that she'll be able to have children, meaning she and Lyle can start a family.
  • Trauma Button: Ribbons becomes one to Anew; even after he's dead and locked away forever just hearing his name makes her tense up.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Anew ultimately decides to give up her immortality so that she and Lyle can grow old together.
  • The Woobie: Anew is this for most of the story. She survives her canon death, but is imprisoned and wracked with guilt the entire time. Lyle making it clear he still cares for her despite everything only makes her feel worse, and when she is released Ribbons tries to possess her in the climax, which is extremely tortuous and painful. Fortunately Anew is able to overcome these odds and get a happy ending.
  • You Are Worth Hell: Lyle has this in regards to Anew.
