New Beginnings is a Smallville fanfiction by MaxFic.

Lois Lane always manages to find trouble. When she interferes with Clark Kent trying to use the Legion Ring to prevent being exposed by Linda Lake she causes the mother of all rewinds in time.

Now, Clark will make the best of things in ways that any average super powered teenager would.

It has been published in Fanfiction.net.

Nothing to do with the similarly named My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfiction .

Tropes found in Smallville: New Beginnings:

  • Adaptation Name Change: Kara Zor-El and Lara Lor-Van are renamed Kara-El and Lara-El, respectively.
  • Arrow Catch: When Clark meets Oliver Queen, he ends up catching arrows until Ollie understands he is not an enemy and his darts are useless anyway.
Clark motioned to the now open door where Oliver had already disappeared.
"He's gonna shoot me with his bow, isn't he?" asked Clark as they walked down the stairs.
    "Probably," said the guard.
"What part of 'I'm not here to fight' did he not understand?" asked Clark as he snatched an arrow out of the air. Clark caught the next three also sighing. "He's a slow learner, huh?"
  • Blackmail Backfire: Subverted. In 2009, Linda Lake discovers Clark's secret and decides to blackmail him to earn fame and notoriety. Clark refuses to give in, so he goes to Lois and asks her to tell his story to the world. Resentful, Linda Lake sets out to destroy his reputation, and Clark becomes a hunted man.
Clark Kent: "Okay, so a little less than eight years from now I was being blackmailed. Someone was going to use my secret to make themselves more important, to make themselves famous. I refused to be blackmailed by her so I went to a close friend and asked her to tell my story to the world. For about five minutes it was great. I was embraced by everyone. Then the nightmare started. The blackmailer took a different route and managed to make me into public enemy number one such that I was now being hunted by the government and several private parties. I'd made a huge mistake."
  • Canon Immigrant: John Diggle of Arrow is Oliver's bodyguard when Clark first meets him, having been appointed by the people who managed the Queen fortune while Oliver was missing after the deaths of his parents.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Invoked; when Clark's assembled team of heroes are preparing to face the Disciples of Zod, Oliver provides different-coloured leather jackets for all of them, even when some (such as Kyla) don't 'need' clothes to use their abilities.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Many of the early meteor freaks Clark faced are of little real threat to him now that he has his future experience.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Thanks to his future knowledge, Clark meets Oliver Queen, opens the antechamber storing Jor-El's hologram and gets his cousin Kara out of her buried ship in his first year as Smallville's defender when it took seven years to accomplish all that in canon.
  • Foil: During the brief period when Lex and Genevieve Teague are shown working together to find the Traveller, they are presented as this, Genevieve seeking to control the Traveller and Lex more concerned with eliminating him so that he won't be a threat.
  • Good Parents: As explaining the circumstances of his time-travel to his parents, Clark thanks them for everything they did for him.
Clark Kent: "You guys are the best parents anyone, anywhere could ever ask for. I can honestly say, I wouldn't be the man I am today if it weren't for the both of you."
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: During an early argument with his adoptive father, Clark shouts he would give anything to have no powers.
  • I Know You Know I Know: Played for laughs when Lois is introduced to Kara, remembers Kara Kent from what she still believes to be a "hallucination", and asks if she is from Krypton.
Kara: (confused) "So did she know or not?"
Lara: "I don't know what's going on but I don't think she knew that she knew until you asked if she knew."
    Kara: (bewildered) "What?"
  • Internal Reveal: As well as Clark's various heroic allies, Chloe is explicitly told Clark's secret shortly before graduation, and General Lane is also let in on the secret before the second meteor shower so that he can help with the subsequent evacuation.
  • Jet Pack: Oliver decides he needs a jet pack after seeing Clark flying for the first time.
  • The Joy of First Flight: In the second chapter, Clark tries to fly for the first time. Smiling witfully, he takes off upwards rapidly, and then he lets himself float around.
Clark finally opened his eyes to realize he was floating comfortably in the air, the image of Lois fixed firmly in his mind.
"Get out of your head Kal-El. Let go and just fly, it's freedom," said Kara, a wistful smile on her face as she remembered the feeling.
Clark shot upwards rapidly, completely unburdened by the future or the past. His mind focused on Lois because she was his freedom. He smiled contentedly as he soared higher. […]
Clark finally stopped his ascent a few miles above ground. This was the freedom Kara had talked about. Clark closed his eyes and allowed himself a chance to just float wherever the high winds took him.
  • Kryptonite Knife: Clark gives one to Oliver so that he can stop Clark if he falls under the influence of red kryptonite, with the understanding that Oliver will just need to make him 'sweat out' the red-K with the knife rather than outright kill him.
  • Love at First Sight: From an outside perspective, Clark and Lois have this, with Chloe in particular fighting the urge to cry when she sees her cousin and her crush bonding so easily.
  • Peggy Sue: Clark and Lois accidentally go back eight years in time, giving them a significant advantage over Clark's early foes.
  • Pink Means Feminine: When Oliver notices Kara's starship is pink, he assumes its owner must be real girly.
Clark burst out of the water a minute later with a large pink ship held under one arm.
"Pink? Could your cousin be a little more girly?" joked Oliver.
  • Put on the Bus: With the settlement she received from Luthorcorp and no reason to stay in Smallville, Lana relocates to Paris.
  • Saying Too Much: When Chloe mentions her cousin has fallen into a coma, Clark blurts Lois' name out, forgetting he is not supposed to know her.
Clark Kent: "Okay, now why don't you tell me what's bothering you?"
Chloe Sullivan: "I just found out my cousin is in a coma and they don't know when or if she'll ever wake up from it."
    Clark Kent: "Lois?"
Chloe Sullivan: "Yeah, how did you know my cousin's name?"
Clark Kent: (bluffing) "You've mentioned her before, a real hot head right, army brat to a tee."
  • Selective Obliviousness: Invoked; even after Lois gathers a mass of evidence proving Lex's criminal activities, Tess continues to insist that everything Lois found could have been planted by Lex's enemies rather than just accept that Lex is guilty.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Clark's original plan was to go back some few days and publish a piece on Linda Lake to ruin her credibility before she can expose him. When he goes back to his teenager years, he sets out to save people who he was unable to protect in the original timeline.
  • Shooting Superman: During his first meeting with Clark, Oliver Queen shoots him with an arrow. Clark snatches it out of air. Oliver fires four more arrows before getting the idea and telling his bodyguard to not bother pulling a gun.
Clark reached for the file he had hidden in his rear waistband ignoring the guard pulling a gun on him. "Relax, it's just a file," Clark said lifting his coat to show him.
"Relax Diggle, I get the feeling shooting him would be a waste of time."
"Thank you, Ollie," said Clark, passing the folder to Oliver.
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: When Lois finally tells Clark about her "hallucinations" where she lived another life, she starts to panic and babble. Clark quickly kisses her to calm her down.
  • Spanner in the Works: After being exposed, Clark intends to go back a few days in order to discredit Linda Lake's before she exposes him. Linda's interference, though, causes him and Lois to travel to 2001.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Clark's advance knowledge allows him to save Ryan James, Kyla Willowbrook, Alicia Baker, Tim Westcott and Wes Keenan, to the point that the latter four become members of the new Justice League while Ryan is receiving training in his growing powers to join the League when he's older.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Lois believes her future self's memories are a hallucination she had while she was in a coma until Clark confirms they are real.
  • Time Travel: Clark's Legion Ring sends him and Lois back to the 2001 year, concretely the night when Clark was told about his origins.
  • Unbroken Vigil: Sam Lane sits by Lois' bedside when she falls into a coma, and he does not leave her side until he is told her brain activity is returning to normal.
Sam Lane sat uncomfortably in Lois' hospital suite. He hadn't left her side yet which meant sleeping in a chair which left his back and neck irritating and causing a fair bit of pain.
  • Waking Up Elsewhere: After unearthing Kara's ship, Clark takes her to the Fortress of Solitude so they can wake her up in a familiar environment where her uncle's hologram can explain everything to her. Kara gets shocked anyway when she comes out of her stasis sleep and finds herself in a Kryptonian-styled chamber.
  • You Didn't Ask: When Oliver asks why Clark never told him his real age during their first meeting, Clark replies he never asked, and it was not relevant anyway.
Oliver Queen: "So, you never told me you were fourteen, what's that about?"
Clark Kent: "You never asked and it didn't really matter, did it?"
Oliver Queen: "I guess not, I was just surprised, that's all."
