Official Summary For Master Quest: Beginnings

Master Quest is a series of Pokémon: The Series fanfiction by potat lasaro.

The series involves a rewrite of Ash's adventures, where the world has drastically changed due to an event that happened some years prior, necessitating all prospective trainers to either earn licenses or attend school before joining the world of professional trainers. In the middle of this is Ash Ketchum, a Book Dumb but earnest trainer, who despite his failings is accepted into the prestigious Pokémon Academy. However, it won't be so easy for him to reach his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master, and he has a long way to go...

At the moment there are a total of three completed stories with a fourth in the works along with a companion piece made up of side stories that wouldn't have made it into the main entries. There are also a couple of oneshots that were released between the publishing of the first and second entries. The first set of stories have been termed "Year One" by Potat_Lasaro due to them taking part during Ash's first year of school and the following summer vacation.

Year One, Master Quest: Beginnings, Master Quest: Lessons, Master Quest: Adventures, and Master Quest: Loss currently follow Ash's enrollment into Pokémon Academy in Viridian City along with his first year of classes and his summer vacation through Johto. Taking place in its own continuity, the series takes a different look on the world of Pokémon.

On April 13th, 2022, Master Quest: Journeys was uploaded. It was meant to cover various stories of the different characters of the Master Quest universe that normally wouldn't have been told in the main entries. Currently there are two chapters that follow Gary during Master Quest: Lessons

The completed list of currently uploaded stories in the Master Quest series are listed below:

    Year One

Master Quest includes examples of:

  • Abandoned Area: Kasai's former lab, left in ruins from years of inactivity.
  • Absurd Cutting Power: Scyther has been trained for years to try and slice through anything, even solid metal culminating in Scyther cracking Bugsy's Mega Scizor's exoskeleton.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Scyther's arms. His blades have been trained to the point they can cut through nearly anything. His cutting prowess becomes so great that the Master Cutter in Ilex Forest allows Scyther to train under him.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Like in the anime, no one can get Butch's name correct.
  • Action Girl: Quite a few. Between Janine, Mayaka and even Kiyu there are plenty to choose from.
  • Adults Are Useless: Subverted. When Team Rocket has taken over the Silph Corporation building, Ash rushes in to try and help out. However the situation is too much for him and in turn is saved by Surge.
  • A Lesson in Defeat: Gary delivers one to Melissa during the first round of the end of year tournament.
  • Alternate Continuity: The entire series is one with the supposed defeat of Team Rocket six years before the first installment.
  • Amulet of Concentrated Awesome: Ash's Feather from Ho-oh. While he [[doesn't know at the moment how to properly use it, when he taps into its power it is something else.]]
  • The Announcer: Romeo
  • Big Bad Ensemble: Implied to be the case given Giovanni's Team Rocket and the true Team Rocket.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Janine comes to save Ash in to help Ash when he's outnumbered in the middle of the tournament.
    • Green of all people shows up to help Ritchie.
  • Break the Haughty: Happens to Gary upon entering Pokémon Academy, when not only does he tie against Ash in the entrance exams but then he goes on to lose against Paul and become completely outclassed.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Implied to be what Kai wants to do to his father.
  • Can't Catch Up: Rithcie begins to feel this way following his loss in the tournament, given that even Ash, who was lower than him, has started to outclass him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ash suffers from a lot of them, especially early on from Mayaka, Giovanni and Corey.
  • Dark Horse Victory: After all of the intersecting rivalries between the top students taking each other out in the tournament, Bruce and Trent are the ones to walk away with the victory.
  • Deep Cover Agent:
    • Giovanni is, more or less, this. He's the leader of the infamous Team Rocket but takes a post at Pokémon Academy as a teacher with his own agenda.
    • Domino is revealed to be this in regards to Celadon University, though for unknown reasons at this time.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Bruce and Trent are implied to be this given their odd comments.
  • I Need You Stronger: Giovanni's major motivation for becoming a teacher, especially in regards to Ash.
  • Not a Morning Person: Mayaka appears to be this.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Gary appears to take this stance towards Ash, constantly wanting to be the one to bring him down.
  • Shout-Out: In an odd way, Bruce and Trent serve as one to Ancienverse, making little references to the series as well as the collaboration done between Epicocity and potat lasaro.
  • Sleepyhead: Corey, who seems to fall asleep at the drop of a hat.
  • Those Two Guys: Bruce and Trent. They're never apart and are practically interchangeable.
