Fanfic / Hogwarts Reimagined

Go To

A retelling of the excanon series through the eyes of a young trans main character, Rhiannon. Rather than at first directly changing canon events I have chosen to instead have characters react to them more realistically, causing some actions that happened in canon to have greater consequences and by this ripple effect gradually altering the story.

Hogwarts Reimagined is a Harry Potter derivative fic by Ardently_Queer in which the Child Who Lived is a trans girl named Rhiannon Potter. It starts with Ardently_Queer's retelling of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and branches off dramatically from there.

The series provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • Hermione's last name is changed from Granger to Ndiaye-Granger to better suit Ardently_Queer's interpretation of the character and her heritage.
    • Dean's last name is changed from Thomas to Thomas-Adusei, for the same reason.
    • Seamus Finnegan is renamed Aeden Finnegan.
    • Cho Chang is renamed Sorcha Cho.
    • Terry Boot's last name is changed to Booth.

  • Adaptational Sexuality:
    • Rhiannon herself is bisexual, showing an interest in Hermione and Luna, and also a brief crush on Cedric Diggory.
    • Hermione Ndiaye-Granger is shown to have some interest in girls, given she has feelings for Rhiannon.
    • Luna Lovegood also shows some interest in Rhiannon.
    • In The Goblet of Fire, Niniane seems to have a celebrity crush on Viktor Krum, where her canon counterpart is an otherwise straight cisgender boy (although canon Ron does admire Viktor).
    • Ginny's celebrity crush on Rhiannon endures after Rhiannon comes out as a girl, and she states herself to be bisexual.
    • In Chapter 27 of The Prisoner of Azkaban, Storm to Weather, Ginny alludes to Fred being bisexual too.

  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Rhiannon is often referred to as Rhi by her peers.
    • After Niniane chooses her name, Fred and George immediately call her Ninny, although she prefers to shorten her name to Nina.

  • Darker and Edgier: Hogwarts Reimagined makes much more clear and explores more the trauma of the canon events, as well as featuring such things as Rhiannon and Dudley's traumatic turning into werewolves.

  • For Want Of A Nail: Hogwarts Reimagined begins changing even the Stations of the Canon early, with a mission to liberate Fluffy from his terrible conditions, a larger and different group of people heading down to the chambers of the Philosopher's Stone and finding that Fluffy has been replaced by a massive giant Wētā, and Hermione solving Snape's puzzle in a different and creative manner that allows multiple people to pass it. In The Chamber of Secrets, Rhiannon and Dudley run away from Privet Drive and in doing so run into a pack of Dark werewolves in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, leading to the both of them becoming werewolves. Thus, the pair are placed with the Lovegood family as a foster home, where they realize that Dudley is a Squib and can in fact perform certain forms of magic that do not require active casting such as potion making. This leads Hogwarts to accept Squib students, such as Kellah Shahid. Events continue to change radically, such as the early deposition of Albus Dumbledore as Headmaster to be replaced by Professor McGonagall, and the different handling of the encounter with Peter Pettigrew resulting in Sirius' name being cleared at the end of The Prisoner of Azkaban.

  • Handicapped Badass: Rhiannon on occasion suffers from a sort of neurological blindness when she is heavily stressed; it doesn't stop her from killing the Basilisk with some help from Luna though. After becoming a werewolf, she also suffers severe joint issues and often walks with a cane.

  • Interspecies Friendship: Most friendships with Rhiannon and Dudley, as they're werewolves after Chapter 3 of The Chamber of Secrets, Bad Moon Rising.

  • Interspecies Romance: Both Hermione and Luna, humans, express romantic interest in Rhiannon, a werewolf.

  • Invisibility with Drawbacks: Rhiannon has sensory issues and so avoids using the Cloak of Invisibility because it is just so unpleasant for her to touch due to its oily texture.

  • Meaningful Rename:
    • Rhiannon, who chooses her new name in Chapter 13 of The Philosopher's Stone, And Wouldn't You Love to Love Her, chooses her new name because in Reimagined, Lily was Welsh, and Rhiannon is a Welsh name she felt fit.
    • In Chapter 26 of The Prisoner of Azkaban, Somewhere Only We Know, Ron Weasley comes out as a trans girl, temporarily naming herself Tee, for the T in To Be Determined. In Chapter 27, Storm to Weather, she chooses the name Niniane, shortened to either Ninny or Nina.
    • Harry Pace chooses their name partially because it used to be Rhiannon's name and they both thought it'd be amusing for people to ask for Harry Potter and be told that no, they're thinking of Harry Pace.

  • Monster Rights Movement: In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Rhiannon and Hermione form the Society for the Promotion of Elven Autonomy and Rights, S.P.E.A.R, and continue it in The Goblet of Fire.

  • My Instincts Are Showing: After becoming a werewolf, Rhiannon's wolfish instincts are often quite close to the surface, and she on occasion growls at people.

  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • Kellah, who wasn't given a last name in the canon, is given the family name Shahid, to reflect her Reimagined background as a second generation Lebanese-Irish girl.
    • Hermione's parents are named Evelyn Ndiaye-Granger and Danjuma Granger.

  • Off the Rails: See For Want Of A Nail.

  • Our Werewolves Are Different:
    • In Chapter 3 of The Chamber of Secrets, Bad Moon Rising, Rhiannon and Dudley are bitten by and become werewolves.
Werewolves in Hogwarts Reimagined experience Involuntary Shapeshifting for several nights on the full moon, and is a Painful Transformation. Unless Wolfsbane Potion is administered, they do not retain their full identity, however strong impressions carry over, resulting in Nyx (Rhiannon's wolf form) recognizing her friends and loved ones.
Werewolves who suppress their wolfish nature and override it with humanity have physically warped and unhealthy wolf forms, resembling that of Remus Lupin in the films; Remus does this, resulting in him looking akin to the Dark werewolves who turned Rhiannon and Dudley, which scares Rhiannon into being openly hostile toward him in Chapter 21 of The Prisoner of Azkaban, Moonshadow, because she accidentally spat out some of her Wolfsbane potion due to scalding tea, which resulted in her not getting a full dose and not fully keeping her identity. Rhiannon and Dudley meanwhile have healthy wolf forms, which directly resemble wolves. Dudley has a creamy blond coat like his hair, and Rhiannon a brindled black coat.
Several dietary requirements carry over into their humanoid forms, resulting in the scene in Chapter 4 of The Chamber of Secrets, Growing Pains, where Rhiannon and Dudley are made somewhat sick by the presence of chocolate in the birthday cake; this illness would have been more severe if it had not been before their first full moons.

  • Scars Are Forever: Rhiannon has a high number of visible scars from both her werewolf attack and her time with the Dursleys, which she normally glamours with magic as such a concentration of scars on such a young girl is suspicious.

  • Sibling Team: although they are not directly siblings, Rhiannon and Dudley come to consider each other so.

  • Shown Their Work:
    • In The Chamber of Secrets, Ardently_Queer worked out the exact location of the Dursley house, locating it in Fairlands, Guildford, and then the exact bus routes and then on-foot path Rhiannon and Dudley took to get to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where they then ran into a pack of Dark werewolves - although the date itself is not given, in Chapter 1, An Unexpected Visitor, the date is given as the tenth of July 2002. After this, Rhiannon and Dudley spend a week and a half with Mrs. Figg, before going on the run for a few days, leading to the night the pair ran into the Dark werewolf pack being the real-life date of the July 2002 full moon, the 24th. All subsequent full moons are accurate to their in-universe date.
    • Weather information is also made as accurate as possible to real-life weather reports; most notably, in Chapter 4 of The Goblet of Fire, Inclement Weather, the final of the Quidditch World Cup is rained off and postponed by an actual weather event that took place on the 16th of August 2004 wherein widespread heavy rain caused flooding, accidents, and even a few deaths in the UK. The campground is flooded, and the protagonists stay in the tent and play board games for a day, thanks to magic allowing the tent to be elevated above the flooding.

     The Chamber of Secrets
  • Meaningful Name: After a discussion with Hermione in Chapter 21 of The Chamber of Secrets, A Dog's Life, Rhiannon's wolf form is named Nyx, after the Greek goddess of the night.

  • My Instincts Are Showing: In Chapter 20, Polyjuice Palaver, Rhiannon suffers a lycanthropic seizure and is partially transformed between her humanoid and wolf form due to taking Polyjuice Potion, which is not intended for nonhuman use. She requires Wolfsbane Potion, and changes back at the next full moon when her lycanthropic cycle resets itself. Until then, from Chapter 21 to the start of Chapter 23, she remains in this halfway form, and behaves very alike to a wolf; she howls when she's happy - and howls repeatedly during Professor Lockhart's lesson on werewolves to the point she's thrown out of class - wags her tail, and on one occasion chews a pillow to ribbons after Ron throws it at her.

  • Valentine's Day Episode: Chapter 21, Lupine Valentine, features Rhiannon having a small Valentine's Day party in the Hospital Wing, as she is unable to attend the regular one due to her lycanthropic seizure making it very obvious she is a werewolf. The middle of this chapter goes over her makeover to look satisfyingly pretty even while partially shifted into her wolf form, which works surprisingly well. Her tail causes her some trouble with her dress.

  • Wham Episode: Chapter 3, Bad Moon Rising, when Rhiannon and Dudley become werewolves.
     The Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Dance of Romance: In Chapter 26, Somewhere Only We Know, Rhiannon and Hermione attend the end of year ceilidh together. Luna expresses jealousy xe didn't expect.

  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rhiannon gives a brief one of these to Peter Pettigrew in Chapter 23, The Weight of Blame, pointing out that all of the harm that has come to her is in no small part his fault.
