Fanfic / For Who Am I When Not With You?

Go To

For Who Am I When Not With You? is an AU of The Owl House fanfic in which a six-year old Hunter, his memories wiped, is left in the path of Luz and Camila on Earth, and ends up adopted by the Nocedas. Ten years later, he reenters the Boiling Isles alongside her, while unfortunately suffering from an identity crisis.

  • Adaptational Name Change: Hunter has the last name of "Noceda" here, thanks to being adopted by them.
  • Death Seeker: Hunter has dangerously low self-esteem, causing him to be rather nonchalant about the prospect of dying. In one timeline, that plus the sheer trauma he underwent fighting Belos was too much for him and he was Driven to Suicide.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Belos is caught rather flat-footed when Luz admits she mostly wears pants and would like for less dresses in her wardrobe — obviously a Puritan from the 1600s would have old-fashioned opinions on woman's wear.
  • Doorstop Baby: A variant, Hunter is left right in front of Camila and Luz by the person that brought him to Earth.
  • Fatal Flaw: Hunter struggles with major co-dependency issues, becoming jealous when Luz finds new friends in the Boiling Isles and wondering what worth he has beyond being her adoptive brother. Belos is implied to have willingly engineered the mental defect in the Grimwalkers to try and prevent them from rebelling against him.
  • History Repeats: Eda can't help but draw a comparison between Luz and Hunter's relationship and hers and Lilith's when they were kids.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Eda forges a tragic backstory for Hunter as she rightfully suspects him from being the Emperor's nephew and doesn't trust Belos to raise a child, while Gus and Willow peek in Hunter's mindscape and are horrified by his memories of the Emperor's mistreatment and decide to deny having seen anything as a consequence. It backfires on everyone since Hunter is infuriated by his friends lying to him and drifts towards Belos in retaliation.
  • Papa Wolf: Darius from a future timeline was so depressed by his failure to prevent Hunter's suicide that he visited another timeline to abduct a six-years-old Hunter and take him to safety in the Human Realm.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Discussed by Darius who's rather miffed and ambivalent about a possible future him potentially torpedoing Belos' defeat out of the somewhat selfish desire to prevent Hunter from killing himself.
  • Time Skip: The story skips forward ten years after the first chapter.
