Dreaming of Akina is a prequel fanfiction to Initial D written by Sanae
Eighteen-year-old Bunta Fujiwara's parents have passed away and moves to the Fujiwara Tofu Shop run by his uncle. On his road to become Akina's most legendary street racer, he learns growing up is the hardest race ever.
"Until that kid showed up for his first race ever, no one had ever beaten me either."
This work contains examples of:
- Cool Car: Basically any car in the series, especially Bunta's 2000GT, is as cool as possible.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Bunta's uncle Eikichi has a very dark falling out with his younger brother, Bunta's father.
- Deceased Parents Are the Best: Both of Bunta's parents pass away, triggering the entire plot for the fanfic.
- Hero's Classic Car: Much to form like Initial D's AE86, Bunta's Toyota 2000GT is the embodiment of 1970's street racing serving as the basis of the fanfic's plot.
- Japanese Delinquents: Ken Kogashiwa and many of the young street racers can be rather temperamental and instinctive.
- Original Character: Taking place over 20 years before Initial D begins, only a portion of the fanfic's characters are canon.
- Old Master: Eikichi is so skilled he can beat several drivers with newer Mitsubishi's than him driving an ancient one from the 50s. The story also heavily implies he is a far better, at least more experienced driver than Bunta much how Bunta was better than Takumi.
- Self-Referential Humor: The story's 86 chapters are the best example of this. The fanfic also has loads of references to the original, such as how Bunta wants to be the best street racer in Japan much how Ryosuke claimed the same both in the very first chapter/episode.
- Trickster Mentor: Bunta's uncle Eikichi teaches lessons much like he did: by not being clear at all about them.
- What a Piece of Junk: Completely subverted in Bunta's case. In all of his races, Bunta's 2000GT is a much newer and better car than Takumi's 86 in Initial D. The car is easily one of if not the best performing car in the entire story, being able to do almost anything Bunta needs it to do.
