Fanfic / Dragons Duet

Go To

On the Thirteenth of March, 2016, a Tragedy is set to occur. The Trickster, who in the next year will defy fate like it’s their day job, is nowhere to be found for now - still dealing with the fallout of their supposed crime.
But what if someone else was there to prevent it?
You don’t necessarily need a graceful rescue to save a life. Perhaps all that’s necessary is for someone to space out in the right place at the right time.
The Butterfly Effect can take over from there.
- Dragon's Duet Summary

Dragon's Duet is a story set with a Point of Divergence where Ryuji accidentally saved Kasumi from her death and the butterfly effect that follows. Dragon's Duet and it's connected side stories can be found on Archive of Our Own, here.

Tropes in Dragon's Duet include:

  • Accidental Hero: Ryuji keeps Sumire from running into the street - and prevents Kasumi's death - simply by accidentally standing in Sumire's way when she was distraught.
  • Adaptational Badass: Kasumi becomes the fifth member of the Thieves here, and gains the Persona Hua Mulan and Light 'em Up powers, plus a spear and Sniper Rifle to fight with.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Hua Mulan, Kasumi's Persona, has the moveset that was originally used by Cendrillon.
    • After Awakening Cendrillon, Sumire's moveset drastically changes, with her exchanging Bless moves for Curse, and losing the Physical attacks in favor of leaning towards healing more, as well as more status spells (and the same accuracy/evasion boosting move Yusuke gets).
  • Ascended Extra: Kasumi is still alive here, and becomes a Phantom Thief shortly before Kamoshida's Treasure is stolen.
  • Berserk Button: While it's downplayed, it's clear from the narrative that Sumire hates the fact that she's suffering from Successful Sibling Syndrome, and how much Kasumi tends to drag her around.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Kasumi survives due to Ryuji accidentally preventing Sumire from running into the street.
  • Good Parents: Shinichi Yoshizawa and his wife are this to Kasumi and Sumire, clearly loving them both to bits (although it's mentioned that their mother is an Overprotective Mom).
  • Jerkass Realization: Kasumi has one after Ren, Ryuji, and Morgana save her from Kamoshida when he tries to threaten her about her earlier treatment of Ren.
  • Knight Templar Big Sister: They're twins, but Kasumi is very overprotective of Sumire - to the point that when she learns Ren is "a delinquent" and sees her talking to him, she tries to threaten him.
  • Lethal Chef: As it turns out, Kasumi is the polar opposite cooking-wise of Sumire's skills as a Supreme Chef.
Ren: "Sumire told me about your cooking curse. I refuse to let you set fire to Leblanc.”
Kasumi pouted “I’ve never set fire to anything-”
“You melted a pan.” The others stared at Kasumi in shock as she tried to deny it… only for Ren to pull out a picture Sumire sent him. It was impressive how deformed the kitchen utensil was.
  • Mundane Utility: The Phantom Thieves, when they first get Jose's wishing star, wish for... food. Except for Ren, who lectures them over using it for something so petty - even though later, he uses it to wish that Morgana would stop telling him to go to bed.
"Did you guys seriously try to use a potentially all-powerful magical wish-granting artifact, to order a fancy takeaway?"
  • My God, What Have I Done?: During Sumire's Palace arc, Kasumi has a near-breakdown several times as it becomes clear just how bad Sumire's mental health had become without her noticing - and how big of a part she played in that decline.
  • Overprotective Mom: Kasumi and Sumire's mother is very protective of her children. As in, she started pondering the Shovel Talk the second she heard about Ren and Ryuji, long before they starting dating her daughters.
  • Ship Tease: Between Ren and Sumire, as well as Ryuji and Kasumi - Interface Spoiler reveals that both duos are due to become an Official Couple later in the story.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Kasumi and Sumire are both prevented from running into the street like in canon due to Ryuji being in the right place at the right time.
  • Trauma Button: Sumire has trouble going into the street on her own, after the accident where she was nearly hit by a car (where Kasumi died, canonically).
