Tails had had enough of the way he'd been treated by his friends. Between feeling like he wasn't wanted or needed, to believing that his friends would never care about his inventions or feelings, Tails was already on the edge. And when you're on the edge, all it takes is one push to fall off, and one night, when Sonic tried to comfort Tails, he received that final push. Having finally grown sick of the unfair treatment, Tails unlocked a new form, a much darker take on the fox we've grown to know...

This new form would take revenge on his former friends, under the moniker "Dark Tails."

Now, it's up to his friends to return their friend to normal, and hopefully, undo the wrong they had done by Tails. But will they succeed? Or will Dark Tails succeed in getting his revenge?

Dark Tails Unleashed is a 2017 Fanfiction, written by Deviantart user grimlock1997, set in the Sonic Boom universe, with initially, elements and characters of fellow user Fixers Channel's fanfcition series Sonic Boom Legends. It was hyped up on the user's page, before the first chapter was released February 1, 2017. The fanfiction had 25 chapters in total, not to mention a credits page, and two chapters contain scenes related to the fanfiction. ^{Specifically..}  The first was a deleted scene from the original fanfiction, involving Sticks' former pet Buster, being destroyed by Dark Tails. The second was a scene intended to be added to the comic adaptation, involving Tails realizing that he never had a real reason to sing the karaoke.

The fanfiction has been well-received among readers, causing Dark Tails to appear in other of the author's fanfictions, a comic adaptation to be released, and two reboots to be released afterwards.^note  The first being released on July 5, 2019, but was cancelled not very long afterwards, and the second due to be released in 2021.

Dark Tails Unleashed contains examples of:

• Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In the show proper, Tails usually takes disrespect and being slighted with annoyance, but ultimately never holds it against his friends. In Dark Tails Unleashed, it's clear that the words against him have cut far deeper than it did in canon.
• Berserk Button: Don't imply that Tails isn't a real genius. That's what ended up starting his rampage.
  • Don't insult or harm Tails in anyway. You'll quickly find that Zooey can drop being the nice one at anytime.
• Big Damn Heroes: Shift, when he saves Sienna from the burning house.
• Big Damn Kiss: Shift and Sienna in Chapter 18.
  • Tails and Zooey in the finale, which turns Tails back to normal.
• Bullying a Dragon: Zig-Zagged Sonic wasn't bullying Tails, but ended up saying something hurtful on accident, which causes Dark Tails to take form, and attempt to kill Sonic. However, it's worth noting that Sonic didn't realize Tails could or would harm him, and what he said wasn't intentionally harmful.
• Even Evil Has Loved Ones: As angry as Tails is at his friends and fellow villagers, he didn't once consider harming Zooey, actively avoiding harming her in any way.
• Even Evil Has Standards: For as evil as Eggman is, even he's not willing to just stand around while Tails intends to destroy the entire village, even supplying the crew with weapons.
• My God, What Have I Done?: Sonic has a major one in Chapter 9, where he contemplates his mistake in insulting Tails, and turning him away.
  • Amy also gets one after exposing Erik and Quayla's relationship later in the fanfic.
• Morality Chain: Zooey to Dark Tails.
• Oh, Crap!: Sonic gets one in Chapter 2, when confronted face-to-face with Dark Tails, after his unintentional insult.
  • Everyone in the party gets one when Dark Tails gets upgraded to his 2.0 form.
• Rage Breaking Point: Zooey reaches hers after Mayor Fink insults Tails multiple times, grabbing him by the collar and calling him a "stubborn little commoner," and forces him to sign the "Tails Appreciation Day" law. Doesn't help when he attempts to stall his way out of signing.
  Zooey: JUST SIGN IT ALREADY! (bangs her fists down on the desk hard enough to give Fink such a shock that he quickly signs it out of fear)
• Shout-Out: Zooey screaming at Fink "JUST SIGN IT ALREADY," was a reference to the episode "Blue With Envy," where Amy similarly shouts "JUST DO IT ALREADY," when Fink takes too long to un-banish Sonic. Doubles as a Call-Back, considering this is based off that same universe.
