Henry Mills discovers a new story in his book, that of a young aspiring racer named Vanellope. Wanting to help her and discover just what being an Author means, Henry travels to the land of Sugar Rush, Regina and Emma not far behind him. But King Candy, wanting to hide his dark secrets, will do anything to stop Vanellope from winning the upcoming race. It's up to all four heroes to stop him.

A Kingdom Called Sugar Rush provides examples of:

  • Action Girl: Vanellope, Emma, and Regina are all this, and both Emma and Regina intimidate King Candy. Vanellope also shows her badassery in her racing and control of her powers. And even when she's at her lowest, she still shows sass to King Candy.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Like in canon, Vanellope is bullied, though for her "freakishness" (magic) rather than being a glitch, as in this world, Sugar Rush is another magical world, not a video game.
  • Another Dimension: Sugar Rush, instead of being a video game, is another magical world, much like the Enchanted Forest.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Due to a certain choice of words King Candy used, Emma figures out that he was from her world. She questions Sour Bill about this.
Emma: King Candy's not really royalty, is he?
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: The trophy cup reveals that Vanellope was the thought to be dead princess all along with her full name in bold letters on the cup. At that exact moment, Emma and Regina revealed the truth and that King Candy lied to everyone and sent Vanellope to another land, much to the shock of everyone, especially Vanellope herself.
  • Badass Boast: When Emma is taken to speak with King Candy for the first time, Emma's boast is very much justified as she, Regina, and Vanellope are the only ones with magic.
King Candy: Now I hope you won't try anything foolish with your magic, will you?
Emma: Depends on if these guys can keep their hands to themselves.
  • Betrayal by Inaction: Queen Candice, Turbo's close friend, is dying from an illness, which can only be slowed by a potion she takes. While Turbo is extremely upset that his friend is dying, when Candice tells him she knows the kingdom will be in good hands with him, his ambition sets in, and he's eager to get the throne and the adulation of his new subjects. One day, when Candice has a deadly coughing fit, Turbo can hear her, but hesitates on getting her the potion, both greed and knowledge that she has only little time left regardless taking him over. By the time he moves, Candice is dead, and he has to live with the guilt.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Henry develops this toward Vanellope, protecting her from bullies, helping her get into the race, and giving her good advice.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Emma and Regina come rushing to the rescue just when they're needed.
  • The Big Race: The story's climax of course centers around Vanellope entering the Sugar Rush Grand Prix.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Like in canon, King Candy pretty much bellows this when Vanellope comes up on him in the race.
  • Boss Battle: Vanellope has to fight an enraged King Candy during the race, though he thankfully does not turn into a bug.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: Emma tries to convince Vanellope to leave with them and forget the race as she's afraid Vanellope will both physically and emotionally get hurt, breaking Vanellope's heart and also her trust in Emma.
  • Break the Haughty: After Taffyta's bullying, Vanellope still completely trounces her in the race.
  • Break the Cutie: King Candy kidnaps Vanellope and throws her in jail for wanting to race, taunting the poor upset girl and saying she'll be locked in there forever.
  • Constantly Curious: Both Henry and Vanellope when they meet each other, especially Vanellope, who even attempts to take Henry's Author Pen, though just to look at it.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Vanellope's teleportation powers can sometimes save her when she's in danger, but it also caused the residents of Sugar Rush to treat her like a freak. Thankfully with Regina's help she learned to control them.
  • The Corruptible: Hades, The Corrupter, comes to Turbo after Candice's death, and wanting all the Von-Schweetz souls for his vile collection, tries to convince him to kill baby Vanellope as well, saying he'll help him gain the throne and make everyone forget the Queen and princess. Thankfully, Turbo can't bring himself to do this and takes Vanellope to another kingdom to get her out of the way.
  • Darkest Hour: Vanellope being trapped in King Candy's dungeon. She's so upset she even asks why he hasn't killed her if she annoys him that much.
  • Deal with the Devil: Turbo very nearly makes this with Hades. Thankfully he does not go through with killing Vanellope like he was asked.
  • Doting Parent: Candice is a very loving mother to Vanellope, spending her last days bonding and playing with the infant, trying to give her as much love as she can before she dies, and using the potion to stay alive as long as she can for her. Sadly she dies while Vanellope is still a baby, and Vanellope does not remember her at all.
  • Everyone's Baby Sister: Vanellope, who Henry, Regina, and Emma feel the need to help and protect.
  • Friend to All Children:
    • Regina for once. While at first she thought Vanellope would be able to handle things as the heroine, the second she heard how Vanellope was treated, she became instantly protective. Emma is very much similar.
    • Another example is Ariel, who saves Vanellope from drowning, then brings her to Sugar Rush after they talk.
  • Portal Door: Queen Candice's mirror creates a portal in the real world, which pulls in Turbo's car and brings him to Sugar Rush through the mirror. The mirror is shattered by Turbo's car when it comes through, breaking the portal door.
  • Tragic Villain: Turbo is revealed to be this when his friendship with Vanellope's now deceased mother and his past with his friends, emotionally abusive/neglectful parents, and his strong desire to be loved are all revealed.
  • Trapped in Another World: This happens to Turbo when Vanellope's mother, Candice, is testing out a magic mirror, accidentally creates a portal in the regular world. Turbo, who is practicing his racing, is sucked into it. His car breaks the mirror, leaving him unable to return home. However, while upset at first, when he realizes Sugar Rush is centered around racing, he no longer wants to leave.
