A Different Song is a fanfiction related to Miraculous Ladybug and the sequel to Shadows, created by magiaburst.

The story has 12 chapters and is completed. A sequel, Prism, is at 13 chapters and is also completed. A remake, Breaking Boundaries is also available.

Tropes found in this fanfiction:

  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Joining Karasu and Eagle are Silverwolf (themed after the wolf) and Hydron (themed after the thunderbird).
    • Silverwolf's ability is it to track down any object, or track down an element their opponent may have. Upon tracking it down, she can make the objects and elements visible to anyone else in close proximity, giving the team an easy time figuring out how to treat the enemy.
    • Hydron's ability is it to summon three electric bolts that build up an electric barrier around them, that can stun an enemy. He can also shortly enlarge the barrier, which causes the barrier to break, but also for nearby enemies to be stunned, aswell. He often uses it in combination with his miraculous tool, a spear.
  • Antagonist Title: The seventh chapter is titled after the akuma Chaosbringer.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Jessica, after her miraculous has been stolen. Obviously, she is rather frustrated by that fact, but gets better once Cyril brings it back to her.
  • Call-Back: The prologue recaps what the miraculous are, as well as how Jessica became Eagle and met the monk. Overall, the story, akin to Shadows, makes references the main series, but also the New York and Shanghai specials, as well as Shadows. Notable references are in:
    • Chapter 1: Cyril recaps the events of Shadows to Aeon - after all, she only had heard snippets of it from Jessica.
    • Chapter 2: Barbara/Knightowl recounts how they were under the influences of the Eagle Miraculous and how Jessica saved them.
    • Chapter 6, 7 and 8 are one three parter: Marinette and her class visit New York again, which references the special, but it quickly turns out to be different this time around.
    • Chapter 8: Master Fu's mistake is referenced to by the native guardian.
  • Captain Obvious: At one point, Cyril tells Jessica that she sounds like Captain Obvious when recounting the difference between a patrol and a mission as an official member of the United Heroez. To be fair, Jessica said something similar in the past.
  • Character Title: The tenth and eleventh chapters are entitled "Silverwolf" and "Hydron", which represents that both chapters focus on Valerie and Marian respectively and how they obtained their miraculouses and under what circumstances.
  • Character Development: The three-parter reveals that Chloé has turned away from her bad ways. In Chapter 5, it is also revealed that Chloé became a heroine again - once more wielding the bee miraculous, but under the name Yellowjacket.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The tenth chapter is this for Valerie and eleventh one for Marian.
  • Deuteragonist: Jessica and Aeon share this place.
  • Easily Forgiven: When Silverwing locates the boy that stole Jessica's miraculous, the boy apologizes and gives it back. Silverwing easily forgives him and simply tells him to promise him to not do something like that again, which the boy does.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Both Cyril and Jessica were trained before they became miraculous superheroes.
  • Fusion Dance: Cyril unifies the raven miraculous and the wolf miraculous in the third chapter, turning into Silverwing.
  • Implied Love Interest: Throughout the story, it is implied that Cyril may have feelings for Jessica. The last chapters' ending confirms it.
  • Invocation:
    • "Apollo, start the hunt!" and "Apollo, end the hunt." for Silverwolf.
    • "Eleectra, thunderstorm!" and "Eleectra, calm the thunder." for Hydron.
    • It is also revealed that Eagle's invocation to transform back is "Liiri, retract my wings."
  • Magical Girl: Eagle and Silverwolf can be seen as such. There are also male examples with Karasu and Hydron.
  • No Name Given: Averted. In the New York special, the monk didn't have a name. Here, he's called Master Kuruk.
  • Oh, Crap!: This is the reaction of one of Cash's goons once he realizes that Eagle and Karasu are connected to Knightowl, which he knows won't show mercy if he was caught by him. Given his treatment of Techno-Pirate in the special, it is not wrong.
  • Old Friend: Valerie reveals in the second chapter that she has a friend she no longer has contact to. Turns out, it's Chloé.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!:
    • When Karasu finds out Jessica's miraculous has been stolen, he dismisses the patrol for the day, despite her request to do the patrol nonetheless.
    • Valerie, once Eagle tells her that she will get her into safety, she insists helping her against the men in the café. This is what leads her to obtain the Wolf Miraculous.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Cyril's mother, Edma Fairchild became this after revealing she had been a miraculous wielder in the past after seeing a drawing of the Wolf Miraculous on his table, which convinced her that Cyril is Karasu.
    • Alya became this in Chapter 8, after finding out Cyril is Karasu, too.
    • Technically, the New York miraculous team are all such, given they know each other's identities. And obviously, Aeon knows.
  • Second Super-Identity: Silverwing is this to Cyril.
  • Secret Test of Character: Cyril, Aeon and Jessica planned out two of such for Valerie and Marian, to see if they could be good miraculous wielders. Marian takes on a simulation of a villain, which was also planned for Valerie. But instead, she witnesses three men robbing a café, so she helps Eagle as Silverwolf to battle them, instead, which proves her heroism.
  • Ship Tease: Ever since the last chapter of Shadows, a potential relationship between Cyril and Jessica is teased, seen in the first, third and eighth chapter. The last chapter confirms that Cyril has feelings for her.
  • Supernatural Team:
    • In comparision to the United Heroez, the miraculous team relies completely on magic. Ironically, Eagle - who used to be Knightowl's sidekick Sparrow — leads said team. They are still connected to the Heroez, though.
    • Additionally, Jessica and Cyril have great fighting abilities even outside of costume, kind of averting this trope for them.
  • Continuity Cameo:
    • Delmar and Alix are mentioned in Chapter 8 — the latter is seen talking to Jessica, while Chloé mentions him by calling him Damian.
    • Amelie and Félix appear in a few chapters. Latter gets akumatized into the Chaosbringer in Chapter 7.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • Eagle: Bullroarer. She wears it around her right hand.
    • Karasu: Light-weighted metal feather. He wears it on his left glove.
    • Silverwolf: Wolf claws. She wears them on her hands and she can retract the claws anytime.
    • Hydron: Spear. He wears it on his back.
  • We Need a Distraction: Valerie, realizing two of the three men cornered her, distracts them by acting as Knightowl would come to help her. It works.
  • Wham Line: "From now on, you are one of us." — Majestia to Karasu in Chapter 4.
  • Zany Scheme: In the seventh chapter, because of their Solitude plan failing, Jessica, Aeon, Alya and Nino attempt to bring Marinette and Adrien together again. This time, with the help of Cyril. Instead of creating a supervillain that attacks those that no one loves, they use the café that opened for them to order a heart shaped cake, that they would eat alone and then get a rose. And then, they would be greeted by a superhero instead, that spreads love. Of course, this plan fails too, with the arrival of the akumatized Félix. At the end, they just shrug it off, with Jessica suggesting that they should just let them fall in love in their own pace.
