Fanfic / A Chant of Blood and Light

Go To

In Hollow Bastion, Riku claims the Kingdom Key from Sora, who is abandonned by Donald and Goofy. Having outlived his usefulness, Sora is summarily dismissed by Riku through a spell in the stomach. His fall lands him in the Frostback Mountains where a delegation of Chantrymen, mages and Templars find him. They are headed to the Temple of Sacred Ashes.

When the Temple explodes and the Breach opens, Sora finds himself with the only means to close it. Taken in by the nascent Inquisition, he decides to make Thedas his home - and becomes its savior.

A Chant of Blood and Light is a Crossover by Elia41 between Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Age, where Sora becomes the Inquisitor following the events of Hollow Bastion.

Tropes contained in A Chant of Blood and Light:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Keeping with his old habits, Varric nicknames Sora Spiky.
  • Ascended Extra: In the original Dragon Age: Inquisition, Carver only gets a mention from Hawke. There, not only is he among the Grey Wardens sent to assist the Inquisition, he becomes one of Sora's True Companions, bonding over the two of them being someone else's shadow.
    • In Dragon Age: Inquisition, the Fereldian Warden is often mentioned but never seen. Here, the Dwarven Commoner Faren Brosca is a major character and Alistair and Elissa, the Human Noble, make an appearance during In Hushed Whispers. Furthermore, the other Fereldian Wardens are mentioned as providing distant support. Sereda, the Dwarven Noble, is monitoring things from Amarantine while Daylen, the Human Mage, is raising his and Morrigan's child. Theron, the Dalish Elf, is looking for a cure to the Blight like canon but Kallian, the City Elf, performed a Heroic Sacrifice to kill Urthemiel.
  • Berserk Button: Do not wake Solas with a start. The bandits who made the mistake of interrupting his sleep got blasted by his Limit Break in retaliation.
  • Bluff the Impostor: Since the Inquisition has actual Grey Wardens this time around, it wasn't hard for them to pull this Trope and find out Blackwall is a fake. They confront him during In Hushed Whispers, but reassure him they appreciate his assistance and offer him to join the Grey Wardens in earnest. Blackwall takes on their offer, ditching his alias in the process.
  • Children Forced to Kill: Despite being a teenager, Sora has killed people before, across the Worlds and in Thedas. His companions consider it a grim necessity and Varric even comforts him about it.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: The revelation of Corypheus's identity and the implications about the Architect's fate, as well as the realization of how messed up the situation is, cause Faren Brosca to swear so badly Iron Bull himself is offset.
  • Competence Zone: Played With. In Kingdom Hearts, most Heroes are teenagers. In Dragon Age, most Heroes are grown adults. When Sora, a teenager, finds himself in Thedas, people are impressed that a kid can keep up with trained combattants - and deeply concerned he can do it in the first place. Unfortunately, their concerns feed straight into Sora's vulnerabilities.
  • Cuteness Proximity: One of the first things Sera remarks is that Sora is adorable. Despite being a mage, she quickly grows fond of him.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Alistair and Elissa named their son after their diceased mentor, Duncan.
  • The Dead Have Names: Jeremiah, Neliel Sophia. The Templar, Enchanter and Revered Mother who found Sora and perished during the Temple's destruction. Sora shouts their names as he searches the Temple and, after finding them, swears to stick Jeremiah's sword between the culprit's ribs.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Sora nearly crosses the line during his Harrowing. When the Despair demon takes the face of Kairi, he nearly accepts its offer, if only to have someone at his side once the Inquisition inevitably dismisses him. Fortunately, Cassandra and the others were watching and interfere, giving Sora a combination of You Are Not Alone and You Are Better Than You Think You Are that bring him back from the edge. The Despair demon is summarily blasted apart with Light.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Josephine and Leliana try to figure out Sora's past based on what he told them and what they observed. Their conclusion is that he is Rivaini, with Elvhen and possibly Tevinteri origins. Of course, given Sora is from a different universe altogether, they are wrong from start to finish.
  • Happily Adopted: Even before she is made aware of how badly the issue affects him, Josephine had adoption papers drafted for Sora. During his Harrowing, she notes that they are currently to her name but, if he asks, she can correct them so he is adopted by the parent of his choice.
  • Happily Married: Alistair and Elissa, the Human Noble, are the happy ruling couple of Ferelden. Faren and Sereda, the Darven Commoner and Noble, are also married and lead the Fereldian Grey Wardens. No word if Morrigan and Daylen, the Human Mage, are married, but Faren confirms they are happily raising their son together.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Magister Alexius and Felix turn on Corypheus the moment the Fereldian Grey Wardens give them a way to save Felix. It saves their lives, though Alistair and Elissa promise the pair they will kill them if they betray the Inquisition. Alexius has no intention of doing so.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Riku blasting Sora away lands him in Thedas. Since Kairi's Heart is still inside Sora, it ensures Riku will never complete his quest until - if - Sora returns. Oops...
  • Just a Kid: The crux of the "conflict" between Sora and the Inquisition is that, being the only child in an organization made exclusively of adults, the adults are concerned about Sora's well-being and, though they acknowledge his skills and train him so he can properly defend himself, they utterly loathe having to send him close the rifts or being forced to fight. As Cullen says, this shouldn't be Sora's job. The kid should be studying magic or playing with other kids. Unfortunately, they don't have a choice.
  • Magic Knight: Sora was already skilled with magic and his Keyblade and keeps using a sword and his spells in Thedas, something people note is unusual for a mage. It leads to Vivienne training him as a Knight-Enchanter.
  • Mama Bear: Do not mess with Sora if Cassandra is around. During his Harrowing, she punches the Despair demon twice for trying to possess Sora, and is generally protective and mindful of his well-being.
  • Meaningful Name: In Elvhen, sora means the sky. Solas notes how well it fits given Sora's current occupation.
  • The Mentor: Cassandra, Cullen, Vivienne and Solas all take to teaching Sora in order to help him survive.
  • Mistaken Nationality: Because sora is an Elvhen word, the teen is suspected from having elf ancestry. When Sora admits he was adopted and that his birth father had a name most commonly seen in Tevinter, his companions conclude he's a half-breed bastard whose parents couldn't keep him by fear of discrimination. Obviously Sora knows they're completely in the wrong as he was born in another dimension entirely.
  • Mythology Gag: The Fereldian Grey Wardens each bear their "canon" gender-appropriate names. Faren and Sereda used the opposite-sex names for their twins, Duran and Natia.
    • Solas finds himself in the Station of Awakening twice. This is also where Envy confronts Sora before Cole helps him.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Ser Haron is a Qunari Templar. Everyone is initially puzzled by how it could have happened until he explains: Haron was originally an arvaraad, the Qunari equivalent of Templars, until something happened that forced him to flee the Qun to avoid reducation. He stumbled upon a Chantry who took him in and, once he had recovered, suggested he joins the Templars. He agreed. When Iron Bull is offset by the revelation, Haron points that Koslun's teaching and the Chant of Light aren't that different, and it is his choice to follow Andraste.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: Type 2. The Fereldian Grey Wardens never really forgave the other Wardens for abandoning them during the Fifth Blight, and distanced themselves from Weisshaupt in retaliation. When the Breach appeared and the Grey Wardens vanished, they broke off in earnest and cast their lots with the Inquisition.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Jeremiah's sword, which originally belonged to the Templar who found Sora, served as his main weapon until he got his Spirit Blade. He keeps it as a sidearm in case his magic fails him.
  • Troubled Teen: Sora's past left him with no small amounts of issues, which the Inquisition quickly notice. They are notably aware Sora suffers from depression but, since he refuses to talk about it, they have no way to help.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: The adults in the Inquisition are deeply concerned that Sora, who is only fourteen, can keep up with the likes of Cassandra, Varric and Solas. They deal with it because Sora is the only one who can close the rifts, but they do not remotely like it.
  • Unwanted False Faith: The circumstances surrounding his acquisition of the Mark lead to everyone believing Sora is the Herald of Andraste. Being fresh from the realization that no, he wasn't the Keyblade's Chosen One, Sora strenuously objects, and he and Cassandra often argue on the topic. That doesn't mean he refuses to use the Mark, far from it. He is simply holding his judgment until he knows how he got the Mark in the first place.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: No longer needing Sora to bring him the Kingdom Key, Riku blasts him away with a spell, apparently killing him in the process. The event is traumatic-enough Sora is silently afraid the Inquisition will do it to him once the Breach is sealed. Though they do consider dismissing him, Josephine and Cullen himself note that 1) they would never do it so callously and 2) they would make sure he is comfortable with his new situation.
  • Younger Than They Look: Sora is fourteen, yet many people mistake him for being ten or twelve.
