Crossovers
  • BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant: Following the destruction of Vale, Ragna is captured and taken to Salem's castle. However, despite being told that leaving the Evernight is impossible, he doesn't care and frequently makes an effort to escape.
  • Cardcaptor Rad: Hot Shot stands up to and defies Megatron even after being captured by him.
  • Crazy Irken and ? (Invader Zim-based crossover fic anthology by D_rissing and nightmaster000. note ): In the Teen Titans (2003) chapter's epilogue, whereas Starfire is broken into accepting being Zim's slave, Gaz continues to defy them both, resulting in Starfire needing to continuously blast her into submission.
  • Maribat AU: Marinette reacts this way whenever she gets captured by any of Batman's Rogues Gallery, being willing to fight against any of them even without being able to transform into Ladybug.
  • Monsters Versus Aliens: Stitch is accidentally pulled into the Monster World while protecting Lilo and Boo, and is held prisoner there for four days. Stitch does not make it easy for them, as he fights back with all of his strength to try and escape and get back to Lilo. He likely would have torn the entire factory apart if Lilo and Boo hadn't shown up when they did.
  • Stormwolf Adventures: Finn, while captured by Armilla, defies her by talking back at her, taunting her about a wound he inflicted on her, rejecting her advances and nearly burning her mansion down.

Disney Animated Canon

  • Bruises: Hiro at first is this, trying to reason with Callaghan about how he'll be in huge legal trouble for what he's done, but that he can avoid that if he lets Hiro go. When that fails, he lashes out in other ways: he tries to escape whenever he can, screams out the window when left alone with a busted one, resisting Callaghan's attempts to brainwash him into being like Abigail, even stabbing himself in the arm in an attempt to get Callaghan to take him to a hospital. Unfortunately, Callaghan is beyond reasoning at this point, punishing Hiro whenever he "acts out" and gaslighting him into thinking that Tadashi never loved him and that Hiro's only safe with Callaghan. Hiro's eventually forced to go along with it simply to survive.
  • Hope for the Heartless: Months after the events of The Black Cauldron, the resurrected Horned King's revenge on Taran is interrupted for a moment, but to ensure that the boy won't escape, the lich takes Princess Eilonwy as a hostage. During the short hostage situation, the lich can't remember anyone in his thousand years lasting existence protesting against him like the princess does.
  • Light of the Moon: Varian fully understands that he is Mother Gothel's captive, but he doesn't let that stop him from snarking at her and encouraging Rapunzel's adventurous and free-spirited attitude every chance he gets.

Firefly

  • Freedom to the Free: Simon resists every chance he gets, but keeps being forced to comply because of Sexual Extortion and I Will Punish Your Friend for Your Failure threats. His snark and backtalk tendency gets him put into a scold's bridle for three nights at one point along with the owner beating him up.
  • Of Softness and Steel 3: Wash isn’t very compliant when pirates take over Serenity. He covertly puts the ship on a crash course and later taunts the captors on how they won't be able to fly it if they kill him. He also keeps telling Kaylee not to open the engine room door even after he’s shot in the foot.

Inuyasha

  • Darkness (ankh-ascendant): Even after being forced to admit to himself that there appears to be no way out of Naraku's trap, Sesshoumaru refuses to even consider trying to appease his captor, making clear that he will remain Defiant to the End.

Invader Zim

  • The Violet Demon: Gaz doesn't take being enslaved by the Fornaxians lying down, fighting back the second that her control collar is momentarily deactivated as she's put up for auction. This is what impresses Hrol enough that he buys her as a gladiator.

Kung Fu Panda

  • The Vow: The pacifistic Lady Lianne makes brave efforts to undermine with words her captors, first a group of bandits and years later her former fiancé Lord Shen.

Marvel Universe

  • Breaking the Deal: Mephisto taunts Mary Jane with how she's one of the reasons that he's become so powerful. Yet despite his efforts, she refuses to break down, resisting his efforts to demean and demoralize her.

Mega Man

Miraculous Ladybug

My Hero Academia

  • Yesterday Upon The Stair: Both Bakugou and Midoriya resist the League of Villains' efforts to sway them to their side with Breaking Speeches and other manipulations. Izuku even turns their efforts against them by pretending to be swayed in order to lure them off their guard. Unfortunately, Katsuki falls for this as well, making him leery of Izuku even after he knocks Toga out so they can try and escape.
  • Pulse and Void: Present Mic is quite defiant. Pulse, a guy with power siphon quirk, captures him to steal energy from his screams. He asks Mic to cooperate and Mic won’t hear of it. So Pulse has him tortured. Even as he’s being horrifically flogged, he refuses to give in and scream. He isn’t so lucky though when salt is dumped on his mangled back. Even after that, though, he’s rather stubborn and Pulse ultimately has Fusion dose him with Trigger so he’ll lose control of his quirk. Even as the drug is ripping through him, he fights hard not to lose control but ultimately loses the fight. And when he spots Aizawa coming to the rescue, he continues to struggle against Fusion until Fusion slams the butt of his large knife into his head.

Naruto

  • Team 7's Ascension: In the sequel, Lines in the Sand, Naruto is captured by Temari's rebel faction, and holds out until Temari herself helps him escape.

Odd Squad

  • Patterns of the Past has Old Missie be a defiant captive before she's even kidnapped. She is a Curb Stomp Cushion against the Patternista, putting up a fight to such an extent that her office is a complete disaster area when Olesya and Ogden come across it, and despite being Bound and Gagged Olesya can tell she's got a lot of fight left in her by the look in her eyes. When she is free of her confines thanks to Ogden's stealth abilities, the first thing she does is hurl the chair she was bound to directly at the Patternista, who dodges just in the nick of time.

One Piece

  • Abyss Cronica Captive: The female Marine Lieutenant kidnapped and kept captive by Eustass Kidd only has snark and sarcasm for the infamously sadistic, cruel Worst Generation Pirate Captain that has her in his nonexistent mercy. Her spirit and gumption however impresses Kidd to the point that he ends up falling in love with her.
  • This Bites!: Nami is kept prisoner by Shiki. She refuses to be cowed and constantly undermines and humiliates him with the whole world as her audience, courtesy of vidsnails.

Persona

  • Ace in the Hole: During the Kamoshidaman arc of Persona Q2: Ace Edition, Haru proves to be this, as does the young Ken.

Pokémon

  • Pokémon Reset Bloodlines: In a sidestory, Yellow gets kidnapped by a Team Rocket cell in the Sevii Islands to use as bait for Red in order to steal his Pokémon. Rather than panicking or crying, she talks back to her captors assuring them they won't get away with kidnapping her, and even manages to break out with the help of a Rattata she befriended.

Sherlock Holmes

  • Missing: Watson uses every opportunity he has to attempt an escape from the gang holding him, and ultimately gets his hands on one of their guns during the last struggle.

Star Wars

  • Author CaroJune has several Star Wars fics where Han Solo is good at this. He keeps mouthing off to the captors and sometimes outright attacking when Leia gets threatened. It tends to get him cold cocked for his trouble.
  • Patron of the Art of War, a Star Wars Rebels fanfic: Having been captured by Thrawn to "protect" her for her artistic abilities, Sabine is only semi compliant to his demands only after he threats to remove her eyes after her first act of defiance. She makes several defiant gestures throughout the story making it clear that Thrawn can't tame her. She even goes as far as to make an attempt to burn down Thrawn's exhibition down when Vader and the Emperor show up. When that fails she makes a Badass Boast much to the Emperor's amusement.

Steven Universe

  • Dark Dark Ocean Dark: Jasper tries to reason with Lapis and even tries to escape, though Lapis won't let her leave the house.

Sword Art Online

  • Sword Art Online Abridged: Asuna is a even better example of this than in the Anime & Manga folder. She gave a Spiteful Spit to Sugou and earned a terrible reputation among Sugou's scientists and guards by eating them, to the point that some of them take their leave just to avoid her rampage, and it's more than implied that she escaped her "cage" multiple times. The only reason she is still a captive is because of Sugou's admin privileges.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

  • Snow Blind: Due to his injuries, Don can't easily escape from the Nightwatcher after he's abducted. But he does everything he can to try and get away until it becomes clear that the vigilante isn't going to hurt him.

Tolkien's Legendarium

  • A Boy, a Girl and a Dog: The Leithian Script: While being held captive, Luthien tried to warn them that her father and the Sindar army would crack open Narothrond like an anthill in order to free her. Nobody listened. After hearing about this, Finrod and his followers decide the Nargothronds were Too Dumb to Live.
  • Left: Frodo tries to withhold information about his homeland and identity, and when the orcs mention Sam, Frodo clams up entirely for fear of betraying him. He also mentions to the orcs threatening him that Sauron won't be happy if he's killed just yet.

Transformers

  • Black Crayons:
    • While captured by Laserbeak and Starscream, Annabelle Lennox takes advantage of Starscream's ego to convince him to get another Decepticon to watch her. When Starscream gets Barricade to watch them, they convince Barricade to let them go so that he will not suffer the wrath of Ironhide's.
    • Mikaela Banes is captured by Soundwave and Dylan Gould, and spends her time either trying to figure out how to escape or thinking about killing Dylan.
  • Riding a Sunset: Charlie gets kidnapped by Steeljaw, Thunderhoof, and Underbite, who try to interrogate her to find the Autobot that killed Blitzwing, Shatter, and Dropkick. Charlie becomes this trope the second they catch her, taking the sandwiches she has with her and leaving a trail of crumbs for the Autobots. Once the interrogation starts, she gives them no information, breaks out of her cage, and even after being caught again she refuses to say anything. Luckily, Bumblebee shows up just in time.

Turning Red

  • The Great Red Panda Rescue: Mei is kidnapped and refuses to tell her captives about where in China her family is from in order to protect her cousins.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Glass (Bellamy Taft): The majority of Pegasus' captives demonstrate this in a variety of ways:
    • Kaiba is constantly searching for angles and avenues through which he can maximize his changes of reuniting with Mokuba and escaping. Though he has a Moment of Weakness near the end, that's swiftly followed by coming up with another plan.
    • Mokuba and Téa both verbally resist Pegasus. Mokuba also attempts to manipulate him by pretending to give in so that he can undermine their captor in more subtle ways.
    • While Bakura is docile, Yami Bakura is anything but, forcing Pegasus to take drastic measures in order to maintain some semblance of control.
    • Duke fights against Pegasus every step of the way, despite being treated the worst of the lot since Pegasus hadn't even intended to capture him and doesn't value him like the rest.
    • Joey withstands being locked in a dirty cell without a toilet, heat, anything to help him maintain his hygiene or health for six months, being given only the most basic sustenance. Even under such conditions, he resists all of Pegasus' efforts to condition him.
