Tropes related to Randy Becker's creepypasta works:
- All Just a Dream: Invoked by SMW.exe's main plot, an unseen voice wanting Mario to "stop pretending" and that the events of Super Mario World never happened to begin with.
- Arc Words: In Nintendo.exe, "HELP ME" comes up quite a lot.
- Art Evolution: Randy's artwork on the games gets better and better with each instalment, even going full-out 3D with Dr Mario.exe and Star Fox Widescreen Edition.
- Bait-and-Switch: The demonic enemies seen during Bubsy.exe seem to be ready to attack Bubsy, complete with violent shaking. However, the ground collapses underneath him before they get the chance.
- Hopeless Bossfight: Several of the twisted entities in Randy's .exe games have this. A lot of the time, they're not even boss fights; you never even had a chance to begin with.
- Horror Hunger: The main driving plot of Superstar.exe (as well as HUNGRY_FOR_MORE, albeit without any Demonic Possession), with Kirby consuming anything he comes across.
- Jumpscare: Quite commonplace for these games, though while they can show up at the most unexpected times, very few of them are blaringly loud.
- Scary Skeleton: One pops up quite a lot during Tetris.exe, even being the one to trigger the Jumpscare at the very end.
- Shout-Out: The sequence with Bubsy tumbling into the caves can bring to mind a Crewmate or Impostor being ejected. Randy had a bit of a laugh about this in the video documenting the game's development.
- Wham Line: In StarFox.exe."You are not Mr. Johnson."
Tropes related to the remasters
- Adaptation Expansion:
- 3_SINS introduces a new secret route during the early part of the game, which depicts what happened to Wario and Daisy amidst the dark events.
- Likewise, we see the lifeless bodies of Luigi and Bowser during the game (the former of which having his own Jumpscare after the ghost house), alongside the premise of Mario undergoing a full-blown Guilt Complex around an unseen failure.
- Ambiguous Situation: What exactly happened for Mario to undergo his Guilt Complex? What led to the deaths of Luigi, Bowser and Peach to begin with? Perhaps we may never know.
- Anti-Frustration Features: In 3_SINS, if you get a Game Over at any time, continuing will allow you to pick up from the last World Map trek you were on.
- Downer Ending:
- For 3_SINS, Mario is left to wander alone eternally, bearing the guilt of the death of Peach, his brother and his arch-nemesis on himself. No jumpscare, no demonic force at play... nothing. The text before the end credits even says "The curtains close on this tragedy..."
