Hermione Baddeley, born Hermione Youlanda Ruby Clinton-Baddeley, (13 November 1906 — 19 August 1986), was a British character actress best known for playing brassy, blowsy characters.
She started on the stage, appearing both in revue and in Noël Coward's plays. Baddeley progressed to film appearances in The Roaring '20s. She played Ida Arnold, one of the leads in Brighton Rock, which was followed by films including Passport to Pimlico, Scrooge (1951), The Pickwick Papers, The Belles of St. Trinian's, Mary Poppins, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
In 1958, she played Elspeth in Room at the Top. Despite only being onscreen for two minutes and nineteen seconds, she was nominated for an Academy Award; the shortest to ever be nominated. In the mid-60s, she moved from the UK to America, where she made several guest shots on American television.
She joined the cast of Maude from Season 3 to 5, playing Mrs. Naugatuck, Maude's elderly and vulgar housekeeper. In 1975, Baddeley won a Golden Globe Award for the role, and in 1977, she was Put on a Bus, with Mrs. Naugatuck marrying her lover Bert Beasley and moving to Ireland. In her later years, Baddeley provided voices for The Aristocats and The Secret of NIMH.
She died of a stroke at the age of 79.
