Star Wars: Shadows of Starlight is a four-issue comic mini-series published by Marvel Comics, as the opening part of Phase III of The High Republic multimedia project. It was written by Charles Soule and illustrated by a different artist each issue, with the first featuring art by Ibraim Roberson, the second Marika Cresta, and the third Jethro Morales.

Set after the Fall of Starlight Beacon, each issues covers a different viewpoint on the year between the first and second Phases of The High Republic. The first issues follows the Jedi Council and other Order members on Coruscant as they attempt to respond to the threat the Nihil and Nameless pose to the Jedi themselves. The second issue focuses on Elzar Mann and Avar Kriss as they both follow different paths in a galaxy that seems determined to keep them separated. The third issue features Bell Zettifar as he is Knighted and takes the fight to the Nihil. The fourth issue focuses on Marchion Ro as he reshapes the Nihil.

Tropes in this comic include:

  • Child Soldiers: In response to the Nihil and Nameless threat, the Jedi Council implements the Guardian Protocols, which are usually used in wartime. Two of the protocols involve fast-tracking the trials of Padawans and accelerating the combat training of younglings in case things get bad enough.
  • A Day in the Limelight: While issue one is more of an ensemble issue, the second issue focuses on Elzar and Avar, the third is about Bell, while the fourth is about Marchion Ro and the Nihil.
  • End of an Age: The first issue shows a few signs of the transition of the Jedi's style from the High Republic to that of the Prequel Trilogy era. One of these signs is the appearance of the reserve lightsabers, which are much more utilitarian in design compared to the personalized and elegant High Republic-era hilts. The point of these sabers are to be tools that can be replaced as needed given the dire circumstances they are in.
  • Eye Scream: As a sign of how much the Nameless's hallucinations broke him, Azlin Rell gouged out his own eyes to block them out. He has since replaced them with a pair of cybernetic glasses that he can easily remove to show off his empty sockets.
  • The Reveal: The first issue reveals that the mysterious figure that was traveling with Yoda in Midnight Horizon was Azlin Rell, who is surprisingly still alive after 150 years. It is also revealed in his desperation in finding a way to defeat the Nameless and warding off the hallucinations they inflicted on him, he fell to the Dark Side.
  • Sudden Sequel Heel Syndrome: Sudden might be putting it mildly, as the end of his storyline in Phase II had set him up for it. Azlin Rell, once a humble Jedi Knight that strongly empathized with others, was driven irreparably insane by the Nameless during the Night of Sorrow. 150 years later, he has since embraced the Dark Side of the Force to ward off the hallucinations he suffered and seek a solution to the Nameless's defeat. While he genuinely seeks to help the Jedi Order, he's willing to murder a countless number of innocent people to ensure that the rest of the Order doesn't experience the terrors Planet X has to offer.
  • Time Skip: The issues fill in some of the events in the year between Phase I and III, but have time skips within them. In the first issue there are several skips, with more than a month occurring between some pages.
