VOCALOID3
Aoki Lapis
Another Vocaloid using the VOCALOID3 engine, released on April 6, 2012. Her style of music is known as "lifestyle", and that she is targeted towards casual Vocaloid users. The project leaders, comprising of the Surfer's Paradise search engine, the anime studio Studio DEEN, and Nico Nico Douga, sent out a call for NicoNico users to "audition" by submitting a song they believed would suit Lapis, with a chance to become her actual voice. The role of her seiyuu was eventually awarded to an Utatte-mita singernote named Eguchi Nako.
She has at least two demos so far, which can be viewed here and here. Since her commercial release, she's had an explosion of cover songs, most of them quite well made.
- Color-Coded Stones: She is named for the Lapis Lazuli Gemstone and has a color scheme of blue and purple.
- Fun Size: Word of God states that she's 15 centimeters tall.
- Identity Amnesia: She has no memory of who she is, according to Word of God.
- Innocent Blue Eyes
- Invisible to Normals: She's said to only be visible to a subset of human population.
- Magical Girl: Her apparent concept, complete with Transformation Sequence.
- Magic Music: Her singing can give life to others.
- Meaningful Name: Lapis comes from the jewel Lapis Lazuli. Also, "Aoki" means "blue princess". Guess what her primary color is.
- Our Fairies Are Different: As noted in I-style's official site, she's one of the faeries, a special race who can convert songs into power.
- Rock Theme Naming: Named after the gemstone lapis lazuli, which she also wears as a hair deco.
- Sailor Fuku: While there's noticeable differences, her outfit is clearly designed after one.
Merli
The second Studio Deen Vocaloid, her voice was determined by a contest just like Lapis before her. Merli has been described as Lapis's Darker and Edgier sister, which really shows. A demo of her voicebank can be heard here. She was later revealed to be voiced by Misaki Kamata.
- Aloof Darkhaired Girl: Her personality is just as dark as her hair.
- Ambiguously Brown: The first Japanese Vocaloid to be so.
- Animal Motifs: Butterflies.
- Darker and Edgier: Not only visually, as she's said to have a devilish personality.
- Evil Counterpart: Of Lapis above.
- Fun Size: She's only a centimeter taller than Lapis.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: Surprisingly enough, she's actually quite naive and innocent. However, she covers it up by pretending to know everything ad hoc.
- Meaningful Name: Her name is taken from Merlinite, a stone known for its dual light and dark appearance.
- Of Corsets Sexy
- Rock Theme Naming: Named after the gemstone, merlinite.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: If Lapis can be seen as "light", then Merli would be seen as "dark".
- Tsundere: Word of God describes her as one, though it's never specified which type.
- Vampiric Draining: While Lapis' power of song gives life, Merli's draws energy from living things.
