* AwesomeButImpractical:
** Using him in Suikoden II. He is a powerful character but isn't available in the party changing screen; if you want to use him, you have to make a long trip to Gregminster. If a cutscene automatically remove your party members, you will have to do it again.
** Subverted with Soul Eater. Two of its spells (Deadly Fingertips and Hell) are instant deaths, but those only work to normal encounters, bosses are unaffected with them, while the second spell, Black Shadow, is... overshadowed with other AOE spells provided by the Fire/Rage Rune. Judgment, however, is a very efficient boss-killer but had limited uses, so once Tir runs out of Judgment and Black Shadow, he'll need to rely on his staff-whacking.

* HeroicMime: As is typical of RPG heroes. He's SuddenlyVoiced later in the Drama CD, where he actually ''talks''. Subverted in Suikoden II, see TheQuietOne below.

* BadassInDistress: Subverted. When Tir arrives to save him and Varkas, Sydonia reveals that he could have escaped by his own, and just didn't do it because he did not want to abandon his friend.

* CantArgueWithElves: Subverted. He actually feels this attitude is why elves are terrible people.

* BareFistedMonk: Subverted. He fights with his bare hands and is a monk, but he's a poor physical fighter. He fits more as a magic user, since there are cases of monks reciting sutras.

* LoveMakesYouCrazy: Subverted, in that he knew what he was doing, but still played straight in that he failed logic and pissed off his own people anyway. [[LoveMakesYouDumb He admits he let his control over his kingdom go down the toilet as a result of this.]] [[LoveMakesYouEvil Hence why he became a villain in the first place.]]

* TheSmurfettePrinciple: The only female member of the Five Great Generals. Subverted after the events of the game, as both Valeria and Camille became members of the group, now called the Six Great Generals again.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Subverted. He has always been pleasant, and even after his betrayal, he was always a genuinely affable person and even felt personally bad about it but can't betray his old style.

* InterfaceSpoiler[=/=]{{Foreshadowing}}: Sanchez's name does not appear on the Tablet of the Stars, which players browsing it may notice.

* ArcherArchetype: Downplayed. Kirkis is a skilled archer, but is also emotional, unlike most of his kind.

* DropTheHammer: Being blacksmiths, their weapons are big hammers.

* HatedByAll: He's not even popular even within the Imperial Army. Teo is surprised that Tir's first assignment is under a scoundrel like him. And eventually Pahn can't take working under him anymore and betrays him. Viktor even lampshades this.

* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: He considers elves to be too absorbed in their supposed superiority over the other races. Kirkis is also the only elf in his village to believe that uniting with other races and the Liberation Army will allow the elves to survive and prosper. Unfortunately, these unconventional beliefs have led Kirkis to be considered a BlackSheep by his own people.

* BlackSheep: Although he was raised in the Warrior's Village, he hates fighting and in that sense he is stubborn.

* BlackSheep: He is a renegade elf who left the Elven Village due to his disgust with the elven ways.

* BrainWashedAndCrazy: When first encountered, he is being controlled with a black rune by the Emperor's evil magician, Windy.

* BigFancyHouse: His palace, Scarleticia Castle.
* BrainWashedAndCrazy: Like Kwanda, Milich is being controlled by Wind's black rune.

* BoobsOfSteel: She's a huge amazon of a woman, one of the best fighters, and has an enormous bust to match.

* {{Bishonen}}: Has a distinctly more delicate appearance compared to the other male characters.

* SecretDiary: Subverted. Cleo's diary can be found in her room, in the [=McDohl's=] mansion, but it's locked.

* BladeOnAStick: Her weapon is a throwing spear.

* BladeOnAStick: Her weapon is a polearm.

* BladeOnAStick: Wields the "Demon Spear"[[note]]it evolves into "Demon God Spear" and "Demon Army Spear"[[/note]] in battle.

* BladeOnAStick: She wields a poleaxe.

* SideQuest: In Suikoden II. Once recruited, Tir takes part in an epic RescueArc to save a young boy from Banner village who has been kidnapped by mountain bandits.

* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: She appears as a [=NPC=] in Suikoden II, still living in [=McDohl=] house.

* {{Expy}}: Of Pisces Aphrodite from Manga/SaintSeiya. Both being androgynous, rose-themed generals that protect their domains with poisonous roses.

* NotGoodWithPeople: He's a fussy, grumpy old git most of the time.

* NotGoodWithPeople: He's always by himself in the HQ graveyard.

* ChristmasCake: She's over 25 years old and is trying to find a husband. She attempts to seduce Flik, and later, Tai Ho.

* ChristmasCake: She is 28 years old during the events of the game and still single. To provoke her, the pirate Anji pinned up a wedding dress onto the walls of Shasarazade saying that "This woman can still wear white!", much to her anger.
