[[caption-width-right:350:Tenkai Star]]

The son of Teo [=McDohl=], one of the Five Great Generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire. On his first days of service to the Empire, he and his retainers get embroiled in a centuries-long conspiracy that forces them to rebel against the Empire they once swore fealty to.
----
* ArtifactOfDoom: The Soul Eater rune.
* ATasteOfPower: In Suikoden II, he comes equipped with excellent stats.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Using him in Suikoden II. He is a powerful character but isn't available in the party changing screen; if you want to use him, you have to make a long trip to Gregminster. If a cutscene automatically remove your party members, you will have to do it again.
* FourStarBadass: Becomes one.
** RetiredBadass: In Suikoden II, unless you pull him out of it.
* BigGood
* TheChosenOne: Selected by Leknaat the seer as the one to unite the Toran people against the Emperor's forces.
* CoolHat: His bandana.
* FolkHero: To the people of Toran and Dunan, following his actions in Suikoden I.
* GuestStarPartyMember: In Suikoden II. Tir can be recruited by using a Suikoden I save file with all 108 characters recruited.
* HelloInsertNameHere: You can call the hero any name you wish, although his last name is always [=McDohl=].
* TheHero: Of ''VideoGame/{{Suikoden}}''.

* HeroicMime: As is typical of RPG heroes. He's SuddenlyVoiced later in the Drama CD, where he actually ''talks''. Subverted in Suikoden II, see TheQuietOne below.
* LightningBruiser: He's quick and also packs a punch, especially if his staff is augmented with rune pieces.
* MeaningfulName: His canon name "Tir", which is (appropriately) after the Norse God of War.
* MonkeyKingLite: Downplayed. Wears a golden headband, and uses a staff; the bandanna is also a shared trait with visual portrayals of Sun Wukong, but he doesn't otherwise share similarities with the Monkey King.
* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: He can be recruitable in ''VideoGame/SuikodenII'' by using an OldSaveBonus.
* TheQuietOne: In Suikoden II. He has a handful of lines to say. Most of them during certain plot points.
* SelfMadeOrphan: After Teo refuses to betray the Empire, father and son are pitted against each other in a DuelToTheDeath.
* SideQuest: In Suikoden II. Once recruited, Tir takes part in an epic RescueArc to save a young boy from Banner village who has been kidnapped by mountain bandits.

----
* AnAxeToGrind: Wields the Axe of the Oath.

* TheChampion: To the hero.

* HeroicSacrifice: He dies protecting the hero from the Spores of Agony.
* HomoeroticSubtext: Gremio's obsession with the "Young master" straddles an uncomfortable line between ParentalSubstitute and this.
* OldRetainer: Although he is still young.
* ParentalSubstitute: To the hero, especially as Tir lost his mother at an early age.
* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: Gremio shows up with Tir in the sequel, if you beat this game with him alive. Otherwise, he is replaced by an [=NPC=] girl from Banner Village.
* ReluctantWarrior: He is this, but it's mostly because he is worried about the hero's safety.
* RequiredPartyMember: For the early part of the game. He's ipretty insistent about accompanying the hero.
%%* SoProudOfYou

* XMarksTheHero: Sports a massive criss-cross scar on his cheek.
* YourSoulIsMine: Gremio's soul is drained by the Soul Eater Rune after his death, giving Tir the ability to cast "Black Shadow", the second skill of the rune.

* DuelToTheDeath: He is the only character other than Tir to fight one on one -- in his case, he takes on Teo himself.
* GottaCatchEmAll: He's pretty tough to recruit, as he must be of a sufficiently high experience level to best Teo and therefore become available.
* GrumpyBear: He's a sour sort.
* PreviousPlayerCharacterCameo: He makes a cameo appearance in Suikoden II, during Tir recruitment quest.
* SacrificialLion: When the party confronts Teo's army, they're routed, and Pahn decides to stays behind to buy time by dueling with Teo. If Pahn loses the duel, Teo [[AnyoneCanDie kills him]].
* SecretDiary: Downplayed. Pahn's diary can be found at his room, but it's only about food and his daily training routine.
* SpiritedCompetitor: He lives for fighting.
* TerseTalker: When compared to Cleo, Pahn barely uses more than simple sentence structure.

It is assumed Leknaat reclaimed the front half after Windy's death.
* BigBad: Windy is the main antagonist of the game, as she controls the Scarlet Moon Empire because of her brainwashing Black Runes and Barbarossa's love for her. Her pursuit of the Soul Eater Rune also triggers most of the plot.
* BrokenBird: She suffered [[DoomedHometown a lot of trauma in her past]], and it's likely part of the reason why she's so wicked. The reason the Emperor cares for her so much is because he sees the sadness in her eyes and wanted to make her happy.
* {{Determinator}}: She is relentless is her pursuit of the Hero to recover the Soul Eater Rune.
* DisneyVillainDeath: Downplayed. Windy falls from the castle alongside Barbarossa, but her death is left ambiguous, as no bodies had ever been recovered, and her Gate Rune remains missing.

* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen
* HotWitch: Of The EvilIsSexy variety.

* RapunzelHair: Has long blonde hair.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Due to the Gate Rune's power.
* TheUnfought: Despite her being the BigBad, you never directly battle her.

* VainSorceress: She is the Court Magician for Emperor Barbarossa.
* YouRemindMeOfX: She resembles Emperor Barbarossa's late wife, Claudia.

* IHaveYouNowMyPretty: He kidnaps Lepant's wife Eileen for his own "amusement", leading to a RescueArc storyline.
* {{Jerkass}}: Ostensibly so.
* PitifulWorms: He tends to act pompous towards Tir and his entourage and believes them to be slackers from the first day of their service to the empire.

-->'''Kanaan:''' Understand? Rockland, east of Gregminster.
-->'''Kraze:''' For some reason, this town has failed to pay its taxes.
-->'''Kanaan:''' For some reason, they won't pay.
-->'''Kraze:''' So you will go to Rockland.
-->'''Kanaan:''' That's right, you'll go to Rockland.
-->'''Kraze:''' And tell them that their tax payment is overdue.
-->'''Kanaan:''' Tell them they're overdue.
-->'''Kraze:''' Shut up! Stop yapping while I'm talking.
-->'''Kanaan:''' That's right. All of you stop yapping.
-->'''Kraze:''' Idiot! Kanaan! I'm telling you to shut up!

!!Odessa Silverberg
[[quoteright:207:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden1_odessa.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Satomi Hanamura (Drama CD)

* AdaptationalBadass: She already had a good stat growth in-game, and is a good archer though she unfortunately died way too quick. However, there was tie-in material which revolves around Odessa and her first lover before Flik came along: Achilles. It was this man's death and his final speech of "Defeat the Empire!" which spurred Odessa to kickstart the Liberation Army... and kill a lot of Imperial soldiers with just a sword, whilst still wearing [[KickingAssInAllHerFinery her wedding gown]]. And it's ''canon''. She might've bitten the dust too early because of maternal instinct kicking in at the wrong time, but dang, she's badass.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness
* BlowYouAway: She has a permanent Wind Rune.
* BrainyBrunette
* ChekhovsGun: She made up plans for the Fire Spears and just asks for them to be stored in the Secret Factory so they'll come in handy. It does, when it ends up beating Teo's invincible Armored Cavalry.
* HopeSpringsEternal: She is always insistent on keeping up the tiny ray of hope of defeating the Empire despite her tiny army, which spurred her long term plans. This is also why she requested that nobody tells anyone about her death, because it would kill the Liberation Army's hope and morale.
* IAmDyingPleaseTakeMyMacGuffin: She gives the hero her earrings to take to Mathiu, evidencing her death.
* LaResistance: She bravely leads the fledgling Liberation Army.
* LadyOfWar
* TheParagon: She uses her folk hero status to inspire the people around her to rally to the Liberation Army's cause.
* PluckyGirl
* QuicklyDemotedWoman: She joins the party early in the game, and has great stats - unfortunately, she is killed very soon after joining as a PlotDevice to allow the Hero to take over the leadership of the Liberation Army.
* SiblingYinYang: Mathiu is a strategist who was formerly a pacifistic teacher, whereas Odessa is a rebellious girl and early on in the game, leads the Liberation Army.
* SpiritedYoungLady
* TakeUpMySword: She inherited her fighting spirit from her ex-fiance Achilles. She ends up passing the torch to Tir, so it works both ways.
* YourSoulIsMine: Odessa's soul is drained by the Soul Eater Rune after her death, unlocking its first attack: "Deadly Fingertips" (translated as "Finger of Death" in Suikoden II and IV).

!!Sanchez
[[quoteright:136:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden1_sanchez.jpg]]

* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: Shares this role with Mathiu, mainly when you want to switch party members without advancing the plot (which is almost always triggered by talking to Mathiu) or if Mathiu is somehow unavailable.
* TheAtoner: Following his betrayal, he is pardoned by Lepant and cloistered within Qlon Temple.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: It's pretty shocking when it is discovered that mild-mannered and seemingly loyal Sanchez is an Imperial spy who facilitated the deaths of Mathiu and Odessa...
* BobFromAccounting: He acts as the Liberation Army's financial advisor.
* BitchInSheepsClothing
* TheMole: He secretly infiltrates the Liberation Army as an Imperial spy and cruelly betrays Odessa, and then the Hero..
** BecomingTheMask: He nearly becomes one, having grown to care for everyone in the Liberation Army. Unfortunately, as an old man, he's unable to let go of the past ways. He still felt horrible for betraying the team though, and was even willing to let Flik kill him for punishment, until Mathiu said otherwise.
* InterfaceSpoiler[=/=]{{Foreshadowing}}: Sanchez's name does not appear on the Tablet of the Stars, which players browsing it may notice.

!!Chief of Elf Village

* FantasticRacism: Strongly looks down on humans, which even leads him to disbelieve their capability of exterminating the elves, and refuse to accept help from the Liberation Army. This matter even leads him to have Kirkis and the rest of the party locked up.
* MinorMajorCharacter: Not even important enough to have his own character portrait (though he does have official artwork).
* NoNameGiven: Only ever referred to as the chief of the Elf Village.

!!Chief of Dwarf Village

* BackForTheFinale: Makes an appearance after the final battle, along with Hanzo and Zorak.
* BigDamnHeroes: Finally shows up with the Firewind Cannon when it looks like the Liberation Army is going to be wiped out by the Burning Mirror.
* FantasticRacism: Shown more against the elves than humans, not caring about the possible destruction of their village, and only willing to lift a finger after Tir and his party prove that humans could even be competent enough to break into their vault.
* MinorMajorCharacter: Not a Star of Destiny, but a minor ally at one point.
* NoNameGiven: Only ever referred to as the chief of the Dwarf Village.

!!Zorak

* BackForTheFinale: Makes an appearance after the final battle to congratulate Tir, along with the dwarf chief and Hanzo.
* FamousAncestor: As with Tengaar, Clift, who Zorak is always eager to tell people about.
