Ash T. Sherman

A little water never stopped anyone but cowards, and there are no cowards at Beacon. Are you a coward?

Our protagonist, if not hero. A famous war veteran's grandson, hellbent on following in his grandfather's footsteps and eradicating Grimm from the face of the planet. His weapons are a musket, a revolver, and a mortar that's also a briefcase. His Semblance, Carve, manipulates probability.

  • Birds of a Feather: With Weiss. They hit it off right away because they recognize each other's families, drive, and attitude.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: As ruthless as Ash is, he thinks humans fighting humans is wasteful and even refuses to fight Yang over a disagreement because it wouldn't accomplish anything.
  • Eviler than Thou: To Cardin. Ash recognizes early on that Cardin is the sort of cruel, petty jerk that falls right in line when someone scarier and more competent establishes dominance, so he cows the CRDL boys into being his Evil Minions.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: To Cardin's gang to establish a pecking order and to his own team to get them to improve. Unlike most examples, he recognizes his teammates' limits and doesn't force them to try to keep up with his Training from Hell right away.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: He wants to kill all the Grimm, which is good, but his enthusiasm and ruthlessness are a little... disconcerting.
  • Insufferable Genius: While Ash is undeniably one of the most lethal first years, he's such an asshole that no one except Weiss and Ruby like him.
  • Jerkass: Constantly rude and dismissive to everyone around him. The number of people in-story who like Ash can be counted on one hand with fingers left over.
  • More Dakka: All his weapons are different types of guns, including a mortar.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though he doesn't like Ruby's personality, Ash defends her skills as a Hunter several times after seeing them for himself.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Despite his competency, Ash's rudeness endears him to very few people, but being on a team with Ruby and Ren means that he sees a lot of Yang, Nora, and their teammates. Cardin and his friends would avoid Ash if they could, but they're too scared to. Ash, for his part, would rather be left alone.
