    Alice/Mokuren

Alice Sakaguchi

A shy, quiet high schooler from Hokkaido.

  • Age-Gap Romance: Though reluctant, at firstnote , Alice eventually develops genuine feelings for Rin, despite the 9 year age difference. In the manga only sequel, Rin is 16 when Alice has their first child. Meaning, he was 15 and Alice was 24 at the time of conception.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her immediate reaction after she slaps Rin off the balcony.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Deconstructed. When Alice and Rin first meet, she's old enough to be considered Rin's older sister.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: She eventually fell in love with the 7-year old who blackmailed and manipulated her into being his girlfriend, who also verbally maligns her, and is later revealed that he raped her in their previous life.

Mokuren

  • Cruel to Be Kind: She deliberately refused to awaken within Alice, knowing that when Alice found out the truth of what happened to Mokuren, she would be more traumatized than she already was. Shion got around this by sending a memory of images without sound, forcing Alice's mind to fill in the gaps. While Alice ended up having an identity crisis as a result of not receiving more memories, the reader has to agree that Mokuren made the decision for Alice's safety and emotional stability. Sadly, she fails.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold
  • Rape as Drama: Even though she and Shion agreed to have sex he confessed that he loved her, she resisted at the last second and he went for it anyway. It turns out she changed her mind because she was upset that Shion had lied to her, as he was only using her and her kiche to one-up Gyokuran.

    Rin/Shion

Rin Kobayashi

Alice's annoying seven-year-old (later eight-year-old) neighbor.

  • Bring It: When Kazuto taunts Rin by warning him that he and Haruhiko had "M" on their side, Rin smugly replies that he can't wait to meet him. He gets his wish, M steps out of the shadows and the psychic battle commences.
  • Domestic Abuser: To Alice. Initially, he uses her guilt over accidentally knocking him off the balcony to guilt-trip her into being his girlfriend. But once their past life memories resurface, he uses it to further coral her into doing as he says. Rin even begins dictating who she's allowed to speak with and when. Alice is so brow beaten, that she submits to him.
  • Enfant Terrible: Rin may look like a cute 7-year old kid, but the very first episode wastes little time establishing that he's manipulative and has cruel intentions toward Alice. Made terrifying once it's revealed that he's also an esper.
  • Psychic Powers: Part of his memories from the moon includes taking part in an experiment that endowed him with high-level psychic energy. Rin can teleport and project a mental image of himself that only his chosen target can see and hear. If Rin chooses, he can even kill someone by trapping them in a psychic barrier, then fill it with "water". A trap that "M" only narrowly escapes, which earns a smug compliment from Rin.
  • Reincarnation Romance: Deconstructed. Rin is young enough to be considered Alice's little brother.
  • Slut-Shaming: While messing around with her while she babysits him, he insults her by saying that she's not a virgin. This is foreshadowing to the whole Rape as Drama thing that happened between them in their previous lives, likely subconsciously Slut-Shaming her.

Shion

  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the end, Shion gets everything he wanted: he gets his revenge on Haruhiko, obtains all six passwords to the moon base's central computer, he defeats "M", finally sucdeeds in seducing Moukuren away from Gyokuran, and eventually marries her. Clean sweep.
  • Becoming the Mask: He did genuinely come to love Mokuren after raping her.
  • Cruel Mercy: Shukaido managed to create a single dose of the vaccine, but secretly used it on Shion instead of Mokuren to punish him for raping Mokuren.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was orphaned by war and was a child genius (not helped that he had psychic powers), albeit with emotional problems. He was taken in by a foster father at the age of six, but he died in an accident.
  • Fate Worse than Death: He was the last member of the team to die from the virus after Mokuren — it took nine years, in fact, which is why Rin is younger than the other reincarnated team members. He could never commit suicide, because those who did would never be reincarnated.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: After Mokuren's death.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Gyokuran, who was everything Shion could never be — a good person.
  • Karma Houdini: Aside from Shukaido's failed revenge attempt, Shion accomplishes everything he originally set out to do and gets his happy ending. Making all of Shukaido's, Kazuto, and even "M's" efforts for naught.
  • Rape as Drama: He falsely confesses to Mokuren that he loves her and wants to have sex with her to get back at Gyokuran, who loves her.
  • The Rival: To Gyokuran.

    Daisuke/Hiiragi

Daisuke Dobashi

Hiiragi

    Haruhiko/Shukaido

Haruhiko Kazama

  • Best Served Cold: In his previous life, he was the only one on the moon base who knew why Shion raped Moukuren and exacted revenge by giving Shion a vaccine so he'd be the only one left when he and the others died. Haruhiko knew that, if Shion took his own life, he wouldn't reincarnate. Which forced Shion to spend his remaining 9 years in complete isolation.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Haruhiko's mother is described as half-Indian in the series, making him a quarter Indian.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Suffice to say, his revenge plot came back to haunt him in a big way, 'cuz Shion remembers what Haruhiko did to him and intends to make him suffer for it.

Shukaido

The team's physician.

  • Cruel Mercy: Does this to Shion by secretly injecting him with the vaccine instead of Mokuren so that Shion can suffer alone for the next few years while everyone else can be freed by death.
  • The Medic

    Sakura/Shusuran

Sakura Kokushou

  • Wrong-Name Outburst: While on a field trip, the bus got into an accident and she screamed for Sarjalim to save her. Daisuke, a schoolmate who was also on the bus, realizes from this that they've been having the same moon dreams.

Shusuran

The team's physicist.

    Issei/Enju

Issei Nishikiyori

Enju

The team's telepathic anthropologist.

  • Her Heart Will Go On: Denied. She continues to pine after Gyokuran's reincarnation, despite being fully aware that her love for him will remain one-sided since they're both males now.
Issei: (despondently, to himself) "But what will become of Enju's love...?"

    Jinpachi/Gyokuran

Jinpachi Ogura

  • Did Not Get the Girl: Shion succeeds in seducing Moukuren away from him twice, in both their lifetimes.
  • His Heart Will Go On: Once he realizes he's lost Alice to a kid half their age, Jinpachi reluctantly accepts it and leaves them be.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Alice mistakes him for being gay with Issei when she overhears them talking about how they aren't "normal".
  • Nice Guys Finish Last: Jinpachi is Alice's initial love interest and shown to be cheerfully outgoing and supportive as her friend. So you'd think he'd be the one she'd choose, rather than the evil kid next door who's manipulating her, right? Nope.

Gyokuran

The team's archaeologist.

     "M"/ Mikuro Yakushimaru
A mysterious high-level esper, whom Kazuto contacts to help protect Haruhiko from Rin/Shion.
  • Always Someone Better: As Rin notes, during their battle, while "M's" ability is exceptional... he's only a human esper. Rin's psychic abilities far surpassed him. To him, M only amounted to a minor challenge, at best.
  • David vs. Goliath: M is a human esper pitted against an alien esper, who's reincarnated in the form of a 7-year old child. While both are gifted, the gulf in power gave Rin the clear advantage. M and Kazuto only survive the battle because Rin let them go.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: In the anime adaptation, he's simply known as "M" which is also seen on his greeting card. In the manga, his name is Mikuro Yakushimaru.
  • Psychic Powers: M is an exceptionally gifted esper who wields immense psychic energy. Which is the reason Kazuto contacts him to deal with Rin/Shion.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite being outmatched, M still manages to impress Rin by projecting enough energy to create cracks in one of his barriers, until it shattered. Rin then acknowledges that M's ability is exceptional for a human.
