Go To

    In General
A group of Sphinx siblings with absolute power over certain concepts. They used to be the same individual, but were split apart.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Truth and Games were introduced as weak spirits who were more of a frustration to the Activity Club than an actual threat. Many chapters later, it's learned that they were a Wight and connected to the various major villains in Mayview.
  • Pieces of God: They once made up a Wight called the Great Sphinx, but were shattered by Davy Jones in a quest to conquer spirits.

    :The Great Sphinx
The original wight sphinx before it was cut down to become the multicolored single sphinxes

The Sphinx of Games/The Sphinx of Rules

"YOU ARE SO BAD AT RIDDLES!"

A sphinx spirit who guards a plank bridge in an alleyway.
  • Meaningful Rename: Starts going by The Sphinx of Rules after Max and Isaac beat him up, helping him realize the true nature of his powers.
  • Riddle of the Sphinx: Subverted. The question is meant literally, and the answer is a spirit whose powers happen to match it.
  • Riddling Sphinx: Combined with Troll Bridge, as he requires people to answer his riddles to pass.
  • Sealed Evil in a Six Pack: He and the other sphinxes were once part of a powerful spirit known as the Great Sphinx.
  • Troll Bridge: It's a plank over a ditch, but he guards it all the same.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: His power is that the terms he sets at the beginning of the game will come to pass if he wins. This is implied in his dialogue, and further confirmed by Zack. Luckily for Isaac and Max, he forgot to include eating them as a term at the start.

    The Sphinx of Truth

Another Sphinx-like spirit that attacks the group at the end of chapter 5. Her power makes all lies someone says become the truth, which is marked with blue text.

    The Golden Sphinx

Third Sphinx-like spirit that is seemingly in-league with the Sphinxes of Games and Truth.
  • Cool Shades: Sports a pair of shutter shades.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Seems like a ditz, but his hidden reaction to the Witch being unable to name the prize she seeks hints at him having greater awareness and power than he lets on.
  • Panthera Awesome: Resembles a lion, as opposed to the Sphinx of Truth, who resembles a housecat.

    The Black Sphinx

Max's Spirit

"I'd laugh... but I didn't end up with the sense of humor."

A spirit possessing Max. So far has only appeared to intimidate the Doorman, but seems to be part of the strange going-ons in Mayview.
  • Deadpan Snarker: While it doesn't quite have a sense of humor, it seems to know what should be funny, and snarks at Doorman a bit.
  • Demonic Possession: It is the only spirit we have seen—whether in a Tool or a medium—capable of overriding its spectral completely. Max isn't even aware of what happened when it gives up control again.
  • Magically-Binding Contract: Its powers are hinted to be linked to these. Both times it appears or has been hinted at are when Max is asked to make a promise, and a contract-themed item is the result of copying a sliver of its power.
  • No Sense of Humor: It says "I didn't end up with the sense of humor." Presumably a different piece of the broken god has it.
  • Pieces of God: Doorman calls it a "broken god," which it does not dispute. Likely a shattered part of the Great Sphinx, given the one time it's explicitly been drawn on has shown catlike imagery.
  • Pinky Swear: When Penny copies its powers, she manifests a glove which can empower pinky-swears to let her learn when they're broken.
  • Voice of the Legion: When it finally manifested and spoke to the Doorman, Max's speech bubbles were given multiple stems, implying this.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: Although we have yet to see what its powers actually do, Doorman mentions that they're "nothing to be feared of. Riddles and word games". Now that we know it's likely a Sphinx, one can guess the riddles and word games referred to the Sphinxes as a whole.
