    Danielle

Danielle Rousseau

"You have only three choices: run, hide... or die."
Played By: Mira Furlan & Melissa Farman

"Are you on the same island as I am?"

A woman of French origin who was shipwrecked on the Island with an expedition in 1988, seven months pregnant with her daughter, Alex. Shortly after Danielle gave birth, her daughter was taken away by Benjamin Linus, an Other. Rousseau lived alone for sixteen years, and over time became slightly disturbed due to her isolation.

  • Action Girl: 16 years on the island has made her handy with a gun.
  • The Aloner: Even after the Survivors prove themselves to be allies, Danielle prefers to live alone in the jungle.
  • Aloof Ally: She's firmly on the survivors' side, but it's largely based more on their mutual hatred for the Others, and she doesn't tend to actively help them out unless it helps her own interests as well.
  • Annoying Arrows: As Ben found out when she shoots him through the back.
  • Booby Trap: She's made many traps all over the island, and people still get caught in them from time to time.
  • Break the Cutie: She was forced to kill all her friends, including the love of her life, then her baby was taken away. Cue sixteen years alone followed by a sudden death that goes unmourned. It says a lot when Sanity Slippage is an understatement.
  • Character Death: She's shot during the freighter attack, possibly by Keamy.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Though she lets Sayid go back to his camp, she vacates and sets her old hideout to explode in case he ever tries to go back.
  • Crazy Survivalist: Danielle certainly is one, having survived on the island due to her paranoia and ruthlessness.
  • Death Seeker: During 'Maternity Leave' when she begs Claire to kill her.
  • Electric Torture: What she uses on Sayid.
  • Everyone Looks Sexier if French: Young Rousseau at least.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: And how! 16 years on the island has not helped her sanity; she's paranoid, dangerous and reclusive.
  • I Choose to Stay: When news of the Freighter reaches the survivors Danielle tells Jack that she won't leave with them. After 16 years on the Island there's nothing left for her in the outside world.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: She was already visibly pregnant with Alex when her ship wrecked and her crew was stranded on the Island.
  • It Works Better with Bullets: She removed the firing pin from her boyfriend's gun, knowing that he would try to kill her. Sixteen years later, she used the same trick on Sayid, but allowed him to live.
  • Kick the Dog: She continuously tortures Sayid with electricity no matter how many times he insists he has no idea who she's looking for. She even does it immediately after one of his attempts to relate to her emotionally.
  • Meaningful Name: She is named after the French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who is most noted for his social contract theory but also is the Trope Codifier for the archetype of the Noble Savage. Guess what archetype Rousseau's character comes to represent.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Like many of the characters on the show.
  • Nostalgic Music Box: Sayid repairing her broken music box seems to be the catalyst for her (partial) return to sanity.
  • Pregnant Badass: She shot three members of her team, including her lover, after they were "infected" by the Smoke Monster and then survived alone, all while heavily pregnant with her daughter.
  • Sanity Slippage: Sixteen years of complete and utter isolation have left her borderline savage, and her inability to keep her thoughts and writings straight leaves her ability to help the survivors crippled. Luckily, her interactions with the survivors help her regain some semblance of social skills.
Jack: This is a woman who blew up her own shelter, now she's talking about seeing black smoke and hearing whispers. I mean, she's not playing with a full deck.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: Poor Danielle spends 16 years on the island, alone, trying to get her daughter back and thinking of little else. Then, she finally meets her...and they spend about a week together before they're both killed.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the Bésixdouze Expedition. Nadine and Montand were killed by the Monster, and Danielle murdered her fellow survivors after they were 'infected'.
  • Wild Hair: In the present day, due to 16 years with no shampoo.

    Robert

"We never should have followed those damn numbers!"
Played By: Guillaume Dabinpons

A member of Danielle Rousseau's science expedition that became shipwrecked on the Island. Robert was Alex's biological father and was Danielle's lover.

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: By the Smoke Monster.
  • Character Death: After he's brainwashed by the Smoke Monster, Danielle is forced to kill him. She gave him every chance, but he pulled the trigger on her only find she'd removed the firing pin. Knowing that the Robert she knew was lost, Danielle shot him.
  • Disappeared Dad: To Alex as Danielle had to kill him shortly before giving birth.
  • Dwindling Party: Part of Rousseau's team that quickly diminishes thanks to the Monster.
  • It Works Better with Bullets: He attempts to shoot Rousseau...but she's already removed the firing pin from his gun.
Danielle: The firing pin has been removed. Robert didn't notice it was missing, either — when I shot him.
  • Nice Guy: Robert is a gentle fellow who treats others with compassion...until he gets Brainwashed and Crazy, and as a result becomes more devious.
  • Posthumous Character: Only seen in flashbacks, having died 16 years prior to the main timeline.

    Montand

Montand

Played By: Marc Menard

A member of Danielle Rousseau's science expedition.

  • An Arm and a Leg: His arm is ripped off by the Smoke Monster.
  • Asshole Victim: The Monster kills him, but he was such a dick it's hard to give a shit.
  • Character Death: The Monster dragged him into the ground, ripping his arm off in the process. He was either killed by the shock, blood loss or was just finished off once the Monster had him underground.
  • Dwindling Party: Part of Rousseau's team that quickly diminishes thanks to the Monster.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Flies off the handle at inconsequential things.
  • Hot-Blooded: Montand is constantly on edge and angry.
  • Jerkass: Montand is an aggressive, sexist jerk unwilling to listen to anyone else.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: He's a pretty neutral survivalist, but Montand is certainly a sexist, exhibited when Nadine disappears.
Montand: This is what happens when you bring women. She's probably off chasing a butterfly.
  • Posthumous Character: Only seen in flashbacks, having died 16 years prior to the main timeline.

    Nadine

  • Character Death: She disappears while on the island, and is likely to have been killed by the Monster.
  • Dwindling Party: Part of Rousseau's team that quickly diminishes thanks to the Monster.
  • Killed Offscreen: Nadine disappears suddenly, presumably killed by the Monster.
  • Posthumous Character: Only seen in flashbacks, having died 16 years prior to the main timeline.
  • Red Shirt: She exists mostly to be killed by the Monster.
  • The Quiet One: She has no lines.

  • Killed Offscreen: He's shot by Danielle off-screen, although his body is seen.
  • Posthumous Character: Only seen in flashbacks, having died 16 years prior to the main timeline.
