    Embry G. Oliver

The protagonist of the game, a pale, white-haired child who has to feed a monster living in their basement after it ate their parents.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Deconstructed. Embry's single-minded devotion to keeping the monster fed stresses them out and isolates them from everyone who could help them. It also effectively costs them their childhood, as taking care of the monster leaves them no time to paint or garden, two things they enjoyed very much in the past.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Has blonde hair in Blackout Hospital.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: The drawing in the fridge shows that their full name is Embry G. Oliver. It's unknown what the G stands for, but it stands for "E. G. O".
  • Never My Fault: Both Dr. D. Light and the monster accuse Embry of having this mindset and blaming all of their troubles on either the monster or the people who are just trying to help them, in an effort to avoid taking responsibility for their life.
  • Promotion to Parent: A pretty dark example. After their parents' deaths, Embry was basically promoted to the monster's "parent", as the one who houses and feeds it.
  • Uncertain Doom: The ending has Embry enter the basement by themselves, finally ready to confront the monster. As soon as their sprite disappears, the game ends.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In the Crowscare timeline, coming off less of a stressed kid and more friendly, even being closer to Dr. D. Light. All in all, it really looks as the monster's existence brought out the worst in them, and with it not existing in the first place, all this never happened.

    Embry's Parents

Embry's deceased parents who were eaten by the monster.

  • The Cameo: The mother shows up with Embry and Dr. D. Light in Crowscare, apparently still alive somehow.
  • The Ghost: In the original game, the story takes place after they were eaten by the monster, and as such they never show up. However, the mother does have a cameo in Crowscare.
  • Posthumous Character: They were eaten by the monster before the actual story.

    Dr. D. Light

A traveling doctor who decides to help Embry after seeing them suffering.

  • The Cameo: He shows up in Crowscare with Embry and their mom.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While on the way back to their house, Dr. D. Light jokingly asks Embry if they're not scared a monster is going to attack them in the woods. Embry, who is forced to deal with an actual monster in their home every day, is less than amused.
  • Holiday Mode: His mask has flower ornaments, since the story happens during spring. In Crowscare he changes it for a mask with leaves instead.
  • Nice Guy: A traveling doctor who does his best to help and cheer up Embry.
  • Punny Name: His name sounds like the word "delight", and he is a delight to be around.
  • Promotion to Parent: Becomes Embry's surrogate father in Crowscare.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He does his best to take care of Embry upon seeing how hard their life has been.
  • Uncertain Doom: Dr. D. Light gets pushed into the basement by a panicking Embry after he insists on going in and confronting whatever is down there. We never see him again and there's a bloody puddle around the basement door right after, but it's never confirmed that the monster ate him either.

    The Monster (spoilers)
The creature in the basement who must be fed. It ate Embry's parents, and if not satisfied, it will eat Embry too.
  • Big Bad: Embry must feed it to keep from being eaten like it ate their parents. The conflict is Embry trying to get enough food to satisfy the monster. Though one of the endings heavily implies that the "monster" is in Embry's head.
  • Enemy Within: There is a heavy implication that it only exists within Embry's mind; in the route where Embry finally decides to go into the basement to confront it, it appears as Embry themself and says that Embry is using the idea of a monster to escape responsibility.
  • Self-Made Orphan: While not confirmed, it is heavily implied that the monster is Embry themself, and that they killed their parents while having created the idea of a monster to evade responsibility for doing so.
  • To Serve Man: When the monster first appeared it ate Embry's parents. It also seems to have eaten Dr. D. Light after Embry accidentally pushed him into the basement.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: It's implied that the monster who killed the white-haired Embry's parents is an Enemy Within of Embry themself.
