Special Edition Story # 39 ("A Fierce Southern Current")

Jakob Nachtbloem

A representative of arms merchants. Jakob tries to destroy Golgo 13 so that Golgo can't undermine anymore arms deals; it seems that some politicians have been hiring Golgo to accomplish objectives instead of buying military equipment and using conventional forces, and some of his clients don't like that. He spreads a rumor that Golgo will be investing his massive fortune with whoever takes possession of the Spratly Islands, thus inciting six different nations to try to seize the territory, and also bringing media attention upon Golgo 13. Knowing that Golgo can't kill the reporters investigating the Spratly affair without bringing further media attention upon himself, and knowing that Golgo also can't get out of the trap simply by killing him, Jakob is confident that he's got enough leverage to force Golgo to retire. Golgo, however, manages to take a third option.

  • Arms Dealer: He represents arms merchants, and he also sells some weapons himself.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Golgo isn't exactly good, but the trope still applies to Jakob, who fails to anticipate Golgo's decision to donate all of his money to the United Nations in order to make it clear that he won't be investing it with whoever captures the Spratly Islands.
  • Exact Words: He secures a promise from Golgo not to shoot him. Golgo fulfills his promise and shoots Jakob's oven instead, blowing it up and killing him.
  • Mirror Character: He thinks he's one of these to Golgo
  • "Not So Different" Remark: He makes two of these to Golgo, insisting that he's 'a little' like the assassin.
  • Smug Snake: Even when Golgo holds him at gunpoint, he just smugly explains his plan and why he doesn't think Golgo can shoot his way out of it. When Golgo leaves, Jakob is absolutely convinced Golgo is beaten and will simply retire.

Special Edition Story # 66 ("Flagburner")

Edward Berkeley

A former head groundskeeper of the White House who retired to Florida. During his time at work, he grew disgusted with Bill Clinton, and so he took it upon himself to do what he could to make sure Clinton's protege Al Gore didn't become the next president. Unable to tamper with ballots himself, he hired Golgo 13 to shoot a stack of ballots for Gore which had been wrongly discarded but would have been found during the recount. Golgo proceeded to shoot the ballots, destroying enough Gore votes that George W. Bush was able to win Florida's electoral votes and thus the presidency.

  • Deathbed Confession: He makes a recording in which he confesses to hiring Golgo to shoot a stack of ballots which had all been marked for Al Gore.
  • This Page Will Self-Destruct: Berkeley somehow rigs the tape cassette containing his confession to explode after it's played for the representatives supervising the recount.
