Gikei features an important number of characters from the late Heian period, most of them playing a role in the future Genpei War. As such, the cast is split among the numerous factions, all of them trying to hold an influence over the events of the story, either as allies of Yoshitsune and his companions, bitter enemies, or neutral parties.

The protagonist of the game and 2nd year high school student in 2020. While on summer vacation, he finds himself in the year 1174.

- Childhood Friends: He and Shizuka have been a constant duo since they were kids.

Yoshitsune's long-time friend in the same grade as him, she too ends up trapped hundreds of years in the past.
- Childhood Friends: She's known the Kanou siblings since they were kids, and they're frequently seen together.
- D-Cup Distress: Her large bust had increased in size prior to the story's beginning, causing her to worry about whether or not her festival attire will fit.
- Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: She's very outspoken, while her best friend Roko is more on the quiet side.
- Odd Friendship: Yoshitsune notes that Shizuka and Roko have been quite close to each other since they were young, in spite of their personalities being polar opposites.

Yoshitsune's adopted sister and Shizuka's best friend in the same grade as them, her sudden disappearance serves as the catalyst to to their journey into the Joan era.
- Big Brother Attraction: She has a clear crush on Yoshitsune, what with her blushing as she admires his sleeping face.
- Childhood Friends: She's been best friends with Shizuka since they were little.
- Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Her meek personality serves as a good contrast to her best friend Shizuka's lively demeanor.
- Not Blood Siblings: She was adopted into Yoshitsune's family before the start of the story, making her attraction to him a bit less taboo.
- Odd Friendship: Despite her having a polar opposite personality from Shizuka, they've always been close to one another, with Yoshitsune noting that he's never seen them have a fight.
