     Deltoran Kings and Queens

Adin

The first king of Deltora and the creator of the Belt of Deltora. He united the land against the Shadow Lord's first invasion.
  • The Blacksmith: Even before he began his quest to unite the tribes and create the belt of his dreams, Adin was well-known and respected as a blacksmith. When any of his descendants and other future Deltorans think of him, the fact that he was a blacksmith always crops up.
  • The Chosen One: He was the man of Opal's dreams who would unite the seven tribes and drive the Shadow Lord away from the land.
  • Famous Ancestor: Is this for Lief and the entire royal bloodline.
  • Founder of the Kingdom: Was the very first monarch of the newly created kingdom Deltora.

     Other Famous Deltorans

Opal the Dreamer

A woman of the Plains who lived before the time of Adin and prophesied the first invasion from The Lord of Shadows. She is in fact Adin's ancestor and it is from her that he inherits the gift of prophesy.
  • Abusive Parents: Her parents all but shun her from the outside world as she begins to get older. She misconstrues their concern for her safety for fear of her powers, which she thought caused the future as opposed to merely predicting it. While it's clear they mainly do what they think is best for her, they also never do anything to address the fact that she was clearly unhappy.
  • The Cassandra: Nobody believes her when she warns people about The Lord of Shadows.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: When her tale starts, it seems to simply be about an aging couple finally being blessed with a child. Then she starts having prophetic dreams. Then she dreams about someone she calls the Lord of Shadows. Then she makes her way to Del, looking for the one man she knows can stop him, only to find that he was not born yet. Then she decides to settle down with Del's blacksmith.
  • Dramatic Irony: Lief once noticed that all the families he knew from the Plains were very strange and, in some manner, supernatural. He was completely oblivious to the fact that the exceptional part of his own family was inherited from a woman of the Plains. Not to mention she got her powers from opals, the gem that Lief outright refuses to use out of fear.
  • Safety Worst: She isn't allowed out of her own house without thick, protective clothing up until the day she runs away from home. Considering the sorts of creatures common to the Plains, this might be at least partially a case of Properly Paranoid, but her parents did go a little overboard.
  • Waif Prophet

Rosalyn

A woman of Del who lived well before the time of Adin. She was a trader who came to own a large fleet of ships that exists to this day. She was also the grandmother of Olt, Dann and the Shadow Lord.
  • Broken Bird: She is this after her father murders her husband and erases her memory. She is described as being alike to a breathing corpse.
  • Foil: To Opal the Dreamer. Both had successful parents who would fear too much for their safety for them to enjoy life. Both would rebel against their parents when they feel the tug of destiny and end up on a path leading them to their true loves. And both would settle down and end up starting a family that would go on to forge history from that point onward.
  • Intrepid Merchant: She and her father before her were seafaring traders who visited Islands far and wide, looking for the best deals. She was so successful, her fleet still dominates trade to the modern day and her name is used as the title for the head of the fleet.
  • Love at First Sight: How she meets her husband in Dorne. He claims that this is due to his Fellan heritage.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: She had no idea the sheer amount of suffering she would cause for generations to come when she walked into that shop and met the man behind the counter.

Tenna

A Jalis girl who lived before the time of Adin. She saved the life of a blackbird, who rewarded her kindness by telling her many fantastic stories. These became known as the Tenna Birdsong Tales, and are sacred in Jalis culture. Most provide clues as to the history of Deltora, Pirra and Dorne.
  • Famed In-Story: Not just her own story, but the stories she had to tell.

Ballum

The brother of King Elstred. He was framed for attempting to murder his king and was forced to go into hiding. He and his followers became the first Masked Ones.
  • Frame-Up: He was accused of trying to assassinate Elstred and had to flee from Del for his life.

Doran the Dragonlover

An explorer from the time of King Lucan. He was known for his strange obsession with dragons.
  • Bold Explorer: He is renowned for his travels around Deltora and the Pirran Islands.
  • The Cassandra: He was the first, and for a long time only person to truly understand how important dragons were to Deltora.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: People in his time regarded him as this.
  • Fate Worse than Death: He was cursed by the Shadow Lord into protecting the Sister which he had tried to destroy, causing him to live in agony in an eternity of aging.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: He specifically made preparations to preserve the last of the dragons, not only because they were his dear friends, but also because he knew that only their power could stand against the Shadow Lord's most terrible magic. He had originally intended that light to be flung into the near future, leaving clues for then-Prince Gareth, but the Shadow Lord's forces made sure the clues never reached Gareth. At least the preparations weren't in vain as Lief was able to use them centuries later.

Withick

A famous Deltoran artist who lived in the mire near Del. He was the uncredited writer of the little blue book titled The Belt of Deltora Jarred finds; the definitive treatise on the Belt.

Keras

     Historical People of Maris

Orin

A Maris man who became the first Keeper of the Crystal and united the Maris folk.

Lieth

One of the Zebak's warrior slaves who rebelled against their masters and went on to settle in Rin. He became the Chooser after the clan of Mirril was destroyed. His bloodline, which includes Jiller, Rowan and Timon, have been the Choosers for the last 300 years.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: His mind was wiped by the Zebak of any memories he had of his life in Zebak lands before coming to Maris.
  • Starting a New Life: After overthrowing their masters, he and the other warrior slaves settled in the valley which would become Rin and founded their village.

Evan of the Bukshah

A boy from the Valley of Gold and Keeper the bukshah herd. He lived during the time in which his people disappeared. He looked almost exactly like Rowan.

Fliss of the Silks

A girl from the Valley of Gold and Keeper of the Silks depicting her people's history. She lived during the time in which her people disappeared. She looked almost exactly like Shaaran.

Bron

A young man and warrior of the Valley of Gold. He lived during the time in which his people disappeared. He looked almost exactly like Norris.

     Historical People of Dorne

Dann/Eldannen

A powerful sorcerer and the founder of Weld. He was the younger brother of Olt and the Shadow Lord.
  • White Sheep: The only one of three brothers not to turn to evil.

Perry/Peregrine

A chieftain of Weld before the time of Adin. He was the forgotten son of Rosalyn and the father of Olt, Dann and the Shadow Lord.

Alena/Alenan

A Fellan woman and Perry's wife.
  • Altar Diplomacy: She married Perry purely so that she could get him to declare a treaty where the Fell Zone was declared Fellan territory and off limits to the people of the coast.
  • Happy Marriage Charade: It is implied that, on top of being slowly killed by exposure to the sea, she didn't really love Perry and wasn't terribly happy being married to him. She did, however, genuinely love at least one of her three sons, Dann.

     Historical People of other islands

Tier

A strange turtle man gifted with powerful magic who once lived on the isle of Two Moons. The people of Two Moons feared his power and exiled him into the sea, where he used his magic to create the Island of Tier.

Bar-Enoch

A famous pirate who somehow stole the Staff of Tier from the Hungry Isle.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: The Staff of Tier gave him an unnaturally long life and would have theoretically kept him alive forever. It is said that he simply let himself die of starvation after life 'had lost its flavour'.
