    General
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: They were afraid of dying, so they tried making themselves completely immortal and isolating themselves from anything that could destroy their immortality. After thousands of years living this way, they end up so miserable that they truly wanted to die, but until Rainbow Dash/Fidelitas and Moon Ray/Canticum come in, they couldn't really act on it because of their fears and the Undying King imprisoning anyone who publicly deemed their immortality to be a "mistake".
  • Cessation of Existence: Thanks to the Undying King's propaganda, everyone in Eternus believed there is no afterlife and if they die, they'll cease to exist completely. This fuels their Mortality Phobia, as they're afraid of anything that could kill them no matter how miserable they feel with their present existence, or how much they wanted to die. Fortunately for them, it's averted as there are indeed afterlife realms willing to take them in (or not, in regards to the wicked) after they die from finally being stripped of their immortality.
  • Complete Immortality: The entire civilization was completely unable to die due to a spell they placed on themselves, so long as the Eternity Core remained intact. Unfortunately, this combined with their collective choices turned this into more of a curse than a blessing.
  • Gone Horribly Right: The people of Eternus were so afraid of dying that they tried to make themselves immortal. They succeeded... in the worst ways possible.
  • Hidden Elf Village: Deconstructed. The people of Eternus sealed themselves off from the outside world because they were afraid of everything that could potentially end their immortality and kill them. However, this led to their complete stagnation as they're unable to find proper stimulation to help them cope with their immortality, creating a Vicious Cycle where they want to die, but their fear of death prevented them from acting on that desire. Rainbow Dash/Fidelitas destroying the immortality spell and Moon Ray/Canticum heralding the destruction of Eternus put an end to the kingdom for good, restoring the natural cycle and allowing everyone to pass on.
  • Living Is More than Surviving: By making themselves immortal, but sealing themselves off from the outside world, the kingdom eventually was just going through the motions, miserable and wanting to die, yet too terrified to do so. This is why the kingdom needed destroyed.
  • Mercy Kill: A kingdom-wide example. Rainbow Dash/Fidelitas and Moon Ray/Canticum's intervention led to the fall of Eternus and the deaths of all its subjects, but this is treated as a good thing as everyone was suffering from their Complete Immortality and wanted to die.
  • Mortality Phobia: The people of Eternus were so afraid of death that they made themselves completely immortal with a powerful spell and sealed themselves from the outside world to avoid anything that might kill them. This turned their collective existence into an utterly miserable one, having completely stagnated and grown extremely bored with ther immortality to the point of wanting to die, but were too terrified to end the spell and pass on. Part of their fear stems from the Undying King's (false) belief that that there is no afterlife, which they had been indoctrinated to follow. It took the intervention of Rainbow Dash/Fidelitas and Moon Ray/Canticum for them to realize there is an afterlife after all and finally let go of their fears.
  • Society of Immortals: Deconstructed, as granting themselves immortality turned out to be a very bad idea for the people of Eternus in hindsight. Being a civilization that possessed Complete Immortality thanks to the spell they cast upon themselves, they can't really die from anything. Combine that with factors like Eternus being sealed off from the outside world, the people's collective Mortality Phobia, and having a tyrannical King who imprisons those who remind him of said phobia, and no deities to counteract or test them and their beliefs, and you have an utterly miserable society that's caught up in a Vicious Cycle that lasted for thousands of years. Rainbow Dash/Fidelitas and Moon Ray/Canticum's intervention destroys Eternus and strips the people of their immortality, but finally allows them to die and find peace in the afterlife.
  • Vicious Cycle: By making themselves immortal and sealing themselves off from the outside world, the people of Eternus doomed themselves to a self-destructive cycle that lasted for thousands of years — having lived for that long with no end in sight, everyone became utterly miserable to the point of truly wanting to die. However, because they feared dying so much, they would avoid anything that could potentially kill them, feeding into their misery and perpetuating the cycle. Being ruled by the Undying King, who in fearing death became a tyrant who oppressed his people, didn't help matters. It's not until after Rainbow Dash/Fidelitas and Moon Ray/Canticum arrive that both Eternus and the core of the immortality spell are finally destroyed, fulfilling its people's collective wish to pass on.

    'The Undying King of Eternus'
'The Undying King' (first introduced here) is the immortal ruler of the kingdom of Eternus.

Preserving Light, the Champion of Light

Preserving Light (first introduced here) is an immortal who was one of Eternus' greatest heroine and champion.
  • Anti-Villain: She opposed Rainbow Dash trying to destroy the Eternity Core and end the immortality spell so Eternus could finally find rest and peace. However, she only did so because she was scared to dying and didn't want to see all of Eternus die. Once Rainbow Dash reasoned with her and got through to her, she willingly stepped aside to allow her to destroy the Core.
  • Hesitant Sacrifice: She knows the only thing that can be done to save the people of Eternus is to destroy the Eternity Core and finally end their current situation. However, she's terrified of death like the rest of her people and thus fights Rainbow Dash to try and prevent that from happening. In the end, Rainbow gets through to her and she steps aside to willingly allow her to destroy the Core.
