    The Hero

The Hero

A long adventurer trying to protect his homeland.
  • Barbarian Hero: They're from a small, low tech tribe on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Remnant shows that other human survivors maintain a much higher tech level, including having firearms, which the Hero lacks.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: Despite the fact that you can choose to make the hero male or female (in Before the Ashes only) and that their age varies depending on how many times you died during the game, his appearance as the end boss of Remnant means that he was canonically male, and was still a teenager when he destroyed Clawbone and was corrupted.
  • Kid Hero: He looks to be in his mid-teens at the start of the game (canonically 18 when you gain control of him), and is already his tribe's strongest and most cunning warrior. In fact he actually gets physically weaker as he grows up, even before he starts to go grey.
  • Multi-Melee Master: He can wield swords, shields, scythes, and spears to name a few weapons.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: A roundabout example. By progressing further along their journey, the hero ends up empowering the Root, to the point that when he finally kills the Dragon, he's weakened enough that the Voice is able to capture him and use him as a new Dreamer. He ultimately ends up being the final boss of Remnant's base campaign, Dreamer/Nightmare.
  • Protagonist Without a Past: The only thing we know about the player is that they are the Champion of their Homeland and are now trying to stop an unfathomable evil. They end up helping the evil along instead.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The Voice of the Tree aka. Clawbone is playing you for a fool from the beginning.
    The Voice of the Tree

The Voice of the Tree

The voice of a tree growing around some kind of throne. It offers to help the hero in his quest to vanquish the evil he is facing.
  • Big Bad: Word of God on the remake's discord confirmed its the voice of Clawbone, the dragon that is the games final boss.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The Voice, while sinister sounding, always speaks in praise of your deeds. It's actualy the Big Bad, and is manipulating you into destroying the guardians of the worlds you visit so that it can conquer them.
  • No Name Given: We never learn what its name is in game. Word of God is that it's Clawbone.
    The Dragon

Clawbone

A dragon opposed to mankind, and the principle villain of Chronos.
  • Big Bad: The main villain of the story, and the danger the Hero seeks to slay.
  • Big Bad Friend: The Voice is actually that of Clawbone. He's secretly been manipulating the player into killing off the guardians of the Krell, Yaesha, and the Labyrinth, so that the root can conquer those worlds.
  • Botanical Abomination: He's a dragon made out of wood.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: To Remnant: From the Ashes - though he is long dead by this point, he created the Dreamer and, by extension, the Nightmare, by corrupting the Champion. Additionally, another of his kind, Singe, now prowls Earth.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Despite the amazing amount of power it possesses, Clawbone only fights you when you invade his home. At least, it seems this way.
    Spoiler Character
