Sunati

Sweet and well-meaning, but prone to saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, twenty-two year old Sunati loves using fashion mods to alter her appearance. So she's intrigued when she keeps seeing the same girl at her train station, one who never seems to change her look, and eventually plucks up the courage to talk to her.

  • Blush Sticker: Almost always has a cute flush to her cheeks.
  • Innocently Insensitive: A significant part of the drama in the story comes from Sunati praising Austen for managing without mods, and not understanding what a massive frustration it is for the latter.
  • Loving a Shadow: Austen accuses Sunati of this after being praised for not using mods, asserting that it isn't strength, she simply can't do it.
  • One Head Taller: Sunati is one head taller than Austen.
  • When She Smiles: Sunati has a beautiful smile, Austen especially is often in awe of it.

    Austen

Austen Carran Avila

Unable to use the body mods that everyone else takes for granted, eighteen year old Austen has to work that much harder to achieve her goals. Refusing to be pitied, Austen is determined to prove her worth on her own merit, but she finds herself hesitant to show how vulnerable she can be when Sunati enters her life.

  • Blessed with Suck: Austen has "Egan's Syndrome", an oversensitive immune system which prevents her from using mods.
  • Born Unlucky: She says this herself when talking to Sunati about allowing yourself to be selfish every once in a while.
Austen: Look, I was born unlucky. So the way I see it the universe owes me one. Which means I get to be selfish whenever I want.
  • Crush Blush: Blushes when her friends tease her about liking Sunati.
  • Fictional Disability: Austen's Egan's Syndrome is an autoimmune condition that leaves her unable to use the Bio-Augmentation mods that are ubiquitous in the setting. Being ineligible for mods like memory boosters and physical augments forces her to put a lot of extra work into her studies and her health, and being thought of as Inspirationally Disadvantaged is a major pet peeve for her.
  • Fiery Redhead: More reddish brown hair, but Austen is short tempered, especially when she's stressed.
  • Healthcare Motivation: Austen wanted to become a scientist when she grew up so she could potentially find a cure for Egan's Syndrome, and while she later dismisses this as a childish notion, Sunati notes that Austen is still studying genetics for a reason.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: Austen's dads are gay and she's sapphic herself.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Due to her lack of the extravagant mods other characters use to change their appearances, Austen doesn't think of herself as attractive despite being cute as a button. This has been the case for her since childhood.
  • Important Haircut: Austen, after changing her major.
  • Inspirationally Disadvantaged: Sunati has this view of Austen's inability to use mods. While her feelings are positive, Austen finds it intolerable.
  • Weight Woe: While she's barely curvier than anyone else, Austen occasionally mentions needing to get to the gym or that she feels pudgy. This is due to her not being able to use mods in order to stay fit like most people.
  • Youthful Freckles: Austen has them, but normally her makeup covers them.
