- She follows it up with turning the element of surprise against The Thing, which had been bashing through walls and crawling through ceilings to get the jump on everyone. It is not only angry with being found out so suddenly and easily; it is showing legitimate fear.
- Kate epitomizes "final girl" with her very last action of the film. It seems like the day has been won, only for the reveal that there's one more Thing. Only, she's the one that catches it off-guard via Spot the Thread: she notices that Carter is missing an earring he was wearing before. When she mentions this as being how she "knew" he was human, he gives himself away by lifting a hand to check the wrong ear. Kate then reveals that a second ago, she wasn't putting away the flamethrower in the trunk of their escape vehicle—she was refueling it. The second it's clear Carter isn't human, she lifts the flamethrower and torches him, even though she has to destroy her only means of survival in the process.
