And so it begins.note

"And yet another war. If one were to say that the history of mankind is the history of war, few would disagree."
Narrator's opening lines

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars (Japanese: 銀河英雄伝説 −わが征くは星の大海−, Ginga Eiyū Densetsu: Waga Yuku wa Hoshi no Taikai) is the first animated adaptation of Yoshiki Tanaka's Legend of the Galactic Heroes series of novels. It was originally released in Japan on February 6, 1988.

The film serves as a prequel to the main OVA series that followed only months later, and chronicles the first encounter - in combat between Reinhard von Müsel (who later adopted the Lohengramm name) and Yang Wen-li, the two primary protagonists of the LOGH series.

My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars provides examples of:

  • Bar Brawl: In a pub, some imperial soldiers make disparaging remarks about Reinhard and crude remarks about his elder sister. This incenses Wyn Vandenberg and Louis Helm. The ensuing fight is broken up by Siegfried Kircheis.
  • Gratuitous German: Most of the text in this film is German, but it was written in 1988 in Japan long before the internet. A redditor in this thread specifically highlights this.
Saikimo: So lam a first time watcher and also a German watcher, sol am again amazed by an anime that loves our beatiful language. (even if they do mistakes): like this one

    Heldensagen vom Kosmosinsel

literal translation of the German title:

    heroic saga of cosmos-island

the correct german title should be called:

    Die Legenden der galaktischen Helden

and even that sounds rough. And don't get me started with the roll up text at the beginning.
  • Ignored Expert: Yang's intelligent and clever tactics are thrown out by his direct superior Captain Nilsson who refuses to be undermined on his ship, the Ulysses.
  • Opening Scroll: The movie begins in one entirely in German as the Narrator says its contents to the audience.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Nilsson, Captain of the Ulysses is a textbook example. He lets his arrogance and pride get in the way of his decision-making and refuses to listen to Yang’s superior advice.
  • Those Two Guys: Tonio and Kurt and Oskar von Reuenthal and Wolfgang Mittermeyer fit this archetype perfectly, never being seen apart while commenting on the events unfolding.
