MLLSD Chapter 6; When Sodoko Has A Bite, Not Just Bark

Sodoko stands before the rest of the team, exuberantly declaring that she will be "tightening discipline!" As the rest of the team struggles to figure out what she means, she makes her meaning crystal clear; they are violating the regulations in various ways. As Nekota makes an Oh, Crap reaction, Erwin and Caesar question why she is saying this now, when she's had ample cause to do so before, but Sodoko says that the week for strengthening morals has come.

Sodoko lays down her demands, with the principal offenders in each regard being shown as they're mentioned Everyone must wear the uniform without additional accessories, and must have black hair that is no longer than her shoulders; Sodoko says that it should be the same as hers (although Akebi points out that her blonde hair is natural), but she'll grant them some leeway on that.

History Team declares this to be a form of tyranny, but Sodoko says that she has the student council's blessing. Anzu, sitting on several crates of potatoes (which makes me wonder whether she got bribed), declares that enforcing morals is a pain and gives the morals committee a carte blanche in the form of a scroll. Resigned to the new rules, the people with inappropriate hairstyles visit the Akiyama barbershop, with Jungorou happy to have customers at last before his wife shuts him up.

Karina, on her way to school, gets greeted by Akebi, but doesn't recognize her, much to the latter's displeasure. Miho notes that she finds it difficult to recognize the History Club when they don't have their hair or costumes, and Erwin, with black hair in the standard fox ears, arrives and causes the other three to break down in laughter. Meanwhile, Akebi cries about not being recognized to Taeko, who doesn't even recognize her, while Noriko remains undeterred. Miho doesn't recognize Nekota, who's surprisingly beautiful in her new appearance, and the same goes with Piyotan and Momogawa.

Sodoko arrives, triumphantly declaring that they all have high morals. Erwin declares that This Is Unforgivable!, and Noriko asks if gym clothes can be worn under the uniform; Sodoko hesitantly says yes. Saemonza plans to shoot the Char B1 Bis during training, and Duck Team offers to help out, but Oryou declines, saying that they can't penetrate it.

Miho politely asks Sodoko if this is too harsh, saying that it will affect morale. For her trouble, she and Saori get dragged off to have their hair dyed, with Sodoko saying that it's necessary for the school's benefactors (one has to wonder if they're people who are supporting the school as a result of its winning the tournament, such as those who provided the endowment).

As Sodoko gets a Psychotic Smirk and reminds us that she has the president's blessing, the narration explains that Sodoko has gone Drunk with Power. The week was originally only supposed to target "intolerable" violators, but Sodoko, upon taking that power, targeted even those who had done nothing wrong. Said regulations extend even as far as students' private lives, such as studying, attitude and eating habits. Eventually, Anzu has had enough, and allows the History Club to take action. They give Sodoko a hideous and against school regulations makeover in her sleep, and it's implied that they tipped off Taiga Ou to report on her.

Sodoko's picture is published in the paper, humiliating her and ending her reign of terror. Everything goes back to normal, but Yukari seems to have a new hairstyle, reminiscent of the one forced upon Caesar.

I honestly wasn't very fond of how Sodoko got portrayed here. She may be strict, but, at least in my mind, she has some humanizing aspects, such as how she erases all of Mako's tardies and absences for her role in winning the tournament, as well as at least some sense of camaraderie with her teammates, even if she doesn't approve of everything they do. This seems to be one case in which the comedic aspect of the series removes some of the characters' Hidden Depths and Character Development.

Next Installment: Some of Oarai's former opponents meet for the purpose of defeating them next time.

I don't take Motto Love Love too seriously because it is a comedic spin-off from the start. The author will exaggerate their personality and downgrade their character for comedy. For me, it is official but not necessarily canon to the story.

Jamibu,

I see what you mean, but for some of the side characters, such as Katyusha in Chapter 2 and Darjeeling in Chapter 5, MLLSD generally does a better job of keeping their personalities somewhat more nuanced, or showing sides of them we haven't seen before, while also keeping it funny. That's part of the reason why I tend to like the non-Oarai chapters more.
