The Ending... or not

Snow begins falling on Ivalice, and Ritz and Shara immediately infer that Marche has succeeded and the world is trying to change back, since it snowed on the day the world changed.

Ritz is still hesitant to go back, again, because of her hair. Shara asks Ritz if white hair is bad, and Ritz says that she thinks vieras have beautiful hair. Shara says white hair is a gift from the spirits, and while Ritz says she's not like the vieras, Shara says that Ritz is special for having it as a human. Shara says that Ritz is stronger than she thinks, and if Ritz is happy, her mother will no longer be sad.

One has to wonder why Shara didn't tell Ritz earlier, but it can be argued that back then, Ritz wasn't in the right frame of mind to hear it(as she still wanted to keep the world the way it is, rather than needing a reason to accept her impending return), and the part about Ritz's mother wasn't something that Shara thought of at the time.

Shara expresses a desire to be able to see Ritz's real hair, suggesting that it must be quite beautiful.

Back in Ambervale, Cid, Marche and Montblanc (who fought alongside my Marche against Remedi, but wasn't shown in any of the preceding scenes) emerge from the palace, disheartened and without Mewt. Babus demands to know why Mewt is gone, but Cid tells him to calm down, saying that he vanished once Remedi- the manifestation of his desires- did, and Marche wanted to look for him, but he wouldn't allow it. I've sometimes noticed that when Alice yells at Bob for his part in doing X, Charlie, typically a friend of Bob or possibly his superior, will say "Don't be mad at Bob, he did what he could against X, but I wouldn't let him."

Mewt then suddenly reappears, and he has a new portrait, still dressed as a prince but looking somewhat tired, which better fits his demeanor in this scene. He reassures Babus that he's fine, as he was saying goodbye to his mother who asked him to look after his father for him. Cid concedes that he needs it.

Mewt is about to say something to Marche, apparently an apology, but Marche indicates that there's nothing to apologize for, as they're going home, and he believes Mewt's mother will still live on in his heart. Marche believes that the world will change back instantly, so they won't be able to thank everyone. Montblanc offers to say that in his place, and Marche thanks him personally for all the help, with the two friends parting with what looks like a handshake.

Mewt fears that he'll forget Babus, but Babus reassures Mewt that he'll always remember him and be his loyal servant. Mewt wonders if Ivalice will disappear, but Cid believes that it will remain if those who are there wish for it to do so, even if he and the kids will never be able to return. With all his questions answered, Marche says goodbye to Ivalice.

In the pub, Doned suddenly gets up from the table, surprising Nono, and he realizes that Ivalice will go back to normal. He says goodbye, and walks past Ezel as the world changes back.

Back in Ivalice, Ritz is walking with the girl from her team, who likes her white hair, and finds Ritz's proposal to dye it green disturbing, although it sounds as though Ritz intended that as a joke.

Immediately after Ritz walks by, you see Cid's part of the epilogue. In the English localization, one of his former subordinates asks him for help with a project with his company. In the Japanese version, he decides to have just one drink with his friend, but then head on home after that. One would think that recovering alcoholics should quit cold turkey, but I've heard that Japan has different standards about social drinking, in which you're expected to have a drink in certain social cases unless you're unable to do so for health reasons.

Doned's still at the hospital, and in his wheelchair, and a boy asks him how he defeated Adrammelech, and Doned says he used Mindbreak and Double Sword. While Double Sword is indeed very powerful, and the main reason why I made Marche a Ninja, Mindbreak isn't very useful against Adrammelech; I have to wonder if the writers played the game.

Back in the school, the bullies throw snowballs at Mewt, and Marche asks if he's okay. The bullies tease him, but Marche reminds them that he has a name, and after briefly conferring with Mewt, he and Mewt throw snowballs at Lyle and Colin, before leaving them and going home.

The credits then roll, and the game automatically saves before proceeding to the post-game content.

Next Installment: Some of the post-game missions.

I'm actually kind of offended that people will bring up "But Doned is still in a wheelchair!" as an example of Marche's evil, as if that's even close to letting people suffer in a medieval fantasy world.

That's an interesting point. Of course, people seem to enjoy the engagements, although I do have to wonder what kind of standard of living people have in Ivalice.

One thing that's left open ended is what the Grimoire from the start really was, why it was made, whether or not killing Le-Grim destroyed it (as well as whether Le-Grim "died" in the usual sense), and what long term effects that might have.

Of course, there was no way for Marche to have found out, but it makes you wonder...

Mysterion,

Those are some interesting questions, albeit ones that, as you said, Marche will never find the answers to. The closest we'll get to an answer lies in Cid's explanation, as well as the fact that there's a sequel.

Marche does come back to Ivalice for the post-game missions, with Babus's recruitment mission seeming to indicate that Mewt has already left, but those missions raise their own questions without any definite answers.
