Issue 2: Work Together, Chris-Chan! For You And Your Friends Are Sonichu Heroes!!

Recap time: Sonic and Sonichu team up to take on Giovanni’s cloned Sonichu, Blake, and kicked ass. And now we get introduced to more characters, this time the Self-Insert characters. Yeah, I’m not going to be pretending I don’t know who these guys are anymore. They’re clearly Chris-Chan and two of his friends transformed into Sonichu characters. So, without further delay, let’s go into their debut issue.

Issue 2

It begins with Sonichu finding an ancient temple where it says that only the diamond in the rough the Creature and the Master of the Prophecy can enter the Destiny Cave of Wonders. Some old dude comes out, notices Sonichu, and tells him that they have much to talk about. Later, after a Let Me Get This Straight... from Chris-Chan, he and Sonichu enter the cave. Then, there’s this ancient prophecy, which I’ll admit is a pretty good one.

Pretty much, Chris-Chan is a reincarnation of this old dude’s leader, and that he is said to plop that necklace he has into a pedestal, where it will release the powers of him, his lover, and his rival. He does so, and he meets up with his ancestor, who tells him the whole “unleashing powers” thing. Oh, and there is one major flaw about the prophecy. You know when Sonichu entered that cave? Yeah. Around that same time, a great evil was unleashed. Now, the wording is vague and so we could play a little game of who came first, the evil or Sonichu, so I’m going to assume this idea so I don’t get in a bit of a rage: The day is fated from the start. It just so happens that one of the signs that the evil will strike is Sonichu entering the cave. And so he uses the Sonichu Medallion to transform into Chris-Chan Sonichu! Or, since I like to shorten things, Chrischu.

Meanwhile, the other two beings that were prophesied gain their trinkets as well. Walter’s (I think) ancestor comes and tells him that he should fight Chris-Chan, since they were rivals. He buys it simply because “he was a little jealous against me”. How... petty. Unless it was like, fated that they’d hate each other no matter what. And so Walter becomes Weslichu. Elsewhere, Nicole also gets a talk from her ancestor who says that she has to balance the two and make peace with them in order to fight this big evil that will plague them. Anyone else getting Yu-Gi-Oh vibes here? I mean, you have the ancestors and their reincarnations, the pendant that allows the transformation to happen, ancient Egyptian prophecies, all we’re missing is a rich guy and the rules to a children’s card game being constantly screwed over. Actually, considering that Chris-Chan stated in the introductions page that he is indeed a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, I wouldn’t doubt some elements were taken from the show. Nicole decides that, since it’s fate (no real angsting over the “You Can't Fight Fate” thing, she just buys it like Walter.) and becomes Sarhamachu.

Weslichu then finds Chris-Chan and attacks him, because, again, Chris-chan showed a tiny hint of jealousy towards him. He reveals himself to Chris-Chan and it’s all “OMG! SHOCK!” and I really don’t give two shits about this. This is just soapbox drama put into a comic book. Chris-Chan spills his feelings about the jealousy to Weslichu. However, my eyes are drawn more to Weslichu’s motivation and past as to why his ancestor was rivals with Chris-Chan’s ancestor, and it is a much better excuse for a rivalry. Yes, it’s clichéd and makes a lack of sense, but it’s better than “you were jelly.”

And then Chris-Chan plays Magic Cylinder? No. I’m not making this up. He suddenly plays a Yu-Gi-Oh card. Which works in the CWC world. With a lack of holograms or other such stuff. Anyways, during the fight, Sarhamachu sees the fight and hears Chris-Chan’s reasoning as to why he was jealous. Okay, this is the equivalent to "Hey, you looked at me funny! Let's battle!" It's a very stupid excuse to fight and the fact that "let's fight because our ancestors were rivals!" is a much better excuse. But no, we have to have this stupid soapbox drama bullshit.

So another fight ensues before Saramahchu pulls a Kikyo and pins Weslichu to a tree. I'm not kidding, I immediately thought Inuyasha when I saw that scene. And... IT TURNS OUT THAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE AN INUYASHA NOD! No, seriously, Weslichu said "Where did this non sacred tree come from?" I don't know what I should be happy about: the fact that I got the reference almost subconsciously, or the fact that this author actually did the reference.

The next episode begins with Sarhamachu calling out Weslichu for attacking Chrischu and says that she should have never hooked up with him. Look, I'm very glad this revelation is shaking them both to the core. We're all glad that the Walter/Nicole ship is beginning to sink, but what's it got to do with the damn plot? I mean, yes, Sarhamachu breaking up with Weslichu does sound like a pretty shocking twist... but the thing is, I'm not giving two shits. You know why? Because this relationship JUST happened. I mean, nobody told us that they were a couple before this scene. Suddenly, they're just a couple just so that they can be broken up!

Look, I'm trying my hardest to try and give a flying feather about this, but this is as shoehorned in as "Oh, hey, I love that guy you like. You have 24 hours to tell him you love him before I steal him away. Trololololol." Okay moving away from that, Saramahchu says that they have to fight Naraku an evil that lurks within the world. Suddenly, Sonichu goes and tells his metaphorical father that there's a giant cookie rock monster destroying the city. And yes, there's a Powerpuff Girls reference in the following pages.

So we're introduced to this new witch, Slaweel, and her boss inside a magic scepter (which is giving me major Miratrix/Kamdor vibes) whose goal is to, you guessed it, take over the world.

M. Bison: OF COURSE!

N. Bison: NATURALLY!

Oh, and Rosechu is there, but she, like another pink-haired girl, decides to stand there and be useless. Hopefully she doesn't find out that she's useless and make a deal with a cat... And... Okay, this has to be me subconsciously making the reference, because in this scene, Chrischu is telling Weslichu to buck up, and all I can think of is Kamina punching Simon and giving him a Get A Hold Of Yourself Man speech after a similar event happened in Gurren Lagann. And the thing is, Gurren Lagann probably wasn't made at the time this was drawn. I'm thankful, because then I would have been thinking that Chrischu would have gotten himself killed in the next few pages. However, the three Sonichus then take down the Golem and Slaweel decides to Rage Quit, with the voice within the Scepter revealing himself to be Count Graduon, the ultimate evil that the heroes have to defeat. The three head back to their homes and Nicole decides to date this guy named William, much to a comedic dismay from Chris-Chan.

My thoughts on this were that this comic feels a little out of place, though it makes for a great Day in the Limelight episode. Much like how the second issue drew elements from Sonic Adventure 2, this drew elements from Sonic Heroes. You have the team of three people with an interesting dynamic, though it is barely fleshed out at all. The Rival just picks at Chris-Chan for little to no reason, and the reason he gave is a stupid one at best, and the mediator to this trio is simply some bitch who would have left one of them for dead had it not been for the fact that she needs him to help fight off the evil. Not to mention that just after Chris-Chan revealed his feelings to her, she just up and ditches him for a guy who barely appears in the comic.

However, this probably would lead to great character moments with them. Maybe Walter will reunite with Nicole. Maybe Nicole will hook up with Chris-chan soon. I mean, the worst that can happen to these two characters is that we never see them again. Now, some people would want to point out that this author took people he knew in real life and warped their personalities so that they'd be either his rivals or love interests. Now, this can be a problem to several people, but to me, it doesn't really irritate me that much... at least not yet. I kind of like the new villains that were introduced, and like the Power Trio, I like to see this fleshed out. The only thing I can think of is that this could make a good spinoff as opposed to it being in Sonichu, almost like a Poorly Disguised Pilot.

At the same time, the whole soapbox drama thing was something I hated with a passion. I barely gave a fuck about the relationship with Walter and Nicole and the fact that the "you looked at me funny, let's battle!" incident is based off something that happened in Christian's life just makes the drama all the more unsympathetic and the reasoning behind the attack all the more stupid. Okay, second issue wasn't the "head biting off" shockfest that I was expecting, but ever since American Kitsune, I'm counting down to the moment where this officially jumps the shark and I get mad at this comic. They say that Four Is Death...

Tune in next time where we meet the Mighty Morphin' Power Sonichus... I mean the Chaotic Combo.

the worst that can happen to these two characters is that we never see them again.

Worst or best? This is Sonichu, after all.

And yes, "Walter" and "Nicole" were based off real people, though before a retcon he was using their real names. The retcon doesn't make three superpowered twenty-somethings acting out their high school relationship drama less stupid, but it does make it less creepy, I think.

They're two sides of a coin, really.

Worst, because we just spent an entire issue getting introduced to them and them not appearing ever again just screams They Wasted A Pretty Good Character, especially with all that hype built around them. It's like, to make yet another MLP reference in this story, if Shining Armor and/or Princess Cadance never appeared after A Canterlot Wedding.

Best, because we see how Chris writes out his characters. Nicole's send-off was probably one of the best send-offs in this comic series, and the best one for Chris-Chan's Bond Girls, since the other ones were either killed within one panel or died off screen.
