In the original Doctor Dolittle Dr. D learns animal-talk from a parrot which speaks English and can also understand all the animal languages (horse, dog, cat, monkey, etc.).

In Discworld, Gaspode the Wonder Dog does this in Moving Pictures, and Constable Angua (a werewolf) can handle that as well.

^^ Translator Buddy is when there is one unintelligible character whose buddy translates for him. This is when the protagonist's buddy translates for all the unintellible characters. They sometimes overlap, but one is not a subtrope of the other.

Does the interpreter have to be an animal? What if it's a human or machine? Gadget?

I think this was a large part of "Mac Duff the Talking Dog". www.imdb.com says Mac Duff was a ghost, but what I seem to remember is Mac Duff telling the lead, a veterinarian, what his 'patients' were saying so he could be not a total screw-up.

Martha from Martha Speaks does this. But she doesn't understand monkey (and possibly other simians). In one episode she got a giraffe to translate a particular monkey for her.

Compare to Speaks Fluent Animal, which is a human character that can understand and translate Animal Talk.
