* HypeBacklash: For reasons mentioned under SeinfeldIsUnfunny, the game might be seen as relatively tame - the fact that there have been 2 games released afterwards that also got an AO rating for violence alone probably contributes to this reaction.

Some have even argued that releasing it wouldn't have affected EA's reputation much, if at all, considering that EA themselves were no strangers to violent video games even before this game.

About fans or critics praising it such audiences don't think it measures up. Not just disappointment.

* HypeBacklash: Upon being cancelled and permanently shelved by EA after they bought out Virgin Interactive, many gamers were eager to see for themselves what the new publisher decided was just too horrific for them to ever experience. Now that it's readily attainable and playable through emulation, it's a bit of a letdown to discover that, disturbing thematic elements aside, the violence and gore really isn't that much worse than the stuff in VideoGame/MortalKombat4, which EA claimed was perfectly kosher in comparison to Thrill Kill.

** Cleetus: Cleetus T. Radley was a cannibalistic SerialKiller before dying of a tapeworm. Partaking in the Thrill Kill tournament to be brought back from the dead, Cleetus will often devour or dismember his opponents. If he is brought back, Cleetus will toss a health inspector into a meat grinder for giving him a bad review. It is then revealed he is now selling his victims' meat to the unsuspecting masses.
** Dr. Faustus: Gabriel Faustus was a deranged plastic surgeon who disfigured many of his patients for no other reason than because he could. Upon dying and going to Hell, he took part in the Thrill Kill tournament to be reincarnated. Faustus is an animal in combat, often biting off his opponents' heads or disfiguring them like he did his previous victims. If he wins and is reincarnated, Faustus kills one of his patients while trying to attach his signature jaws to their face.
** Mammoth: Franklin Peppermint was a postal worker who killed his coworkers and customers after being fired. Becoming a monstrous, fur-covered beast in Hell, Mammoth joins the Thrill Kill tournament to be resurrected. Mammoth uses his immense strength to tear his opponents limb from limb, often beating them to death with the severed limbs or just leaving them to bleed to death. If he wins, he is brought back to Earth still trapped in his monstrous form, and proceeds to kill an innocent old lady by stuffing her and her dog in a mailbox.

** The Imp’s ending has him dreaming of being the president, with an average height...only to wake up and cry at seeing he’s still the same dwarf he always was. Not helped by the fact we aren’t given an explanation on what he did to get into Hell.
** Violet was a murderous misandrist, but only because a man tried to attack her. While killing the man in her ending may have been an overreaction, it shows how paranoid she had become afterwards. * SeinfeldIsUnfunny: The game had a lot of hype behind it, being considered one of the most violent and darkest games ever produced at the time. These days, thanks in part due to HypeBacklash, the game is nowhere near as violent as what we have seen come out of the gaming industry as of recent. Heck, the game wasn't even that violent in comparison to game released at the time such as VideoGame/MortalKombat4.

* Narm: The cutscenes, due in part to the stiff movement of the characters and the bland dialogue.
* NightmareFuel: All over the place. The concept alone is quite unsettling, but it goes even further by just how disturbing most of the characters and their backstories are in the game.
