* HighOctaneNightmareFuel - In season four's opener, Damon and Alaric are [[spoiler: out searching for Stefan, who has disappeared with Klaus. They go to one house and find two young women sitting on the couch, covered in blood. Damon calmly identifies it as Stefan's work, saying "He feeds so hard he blacks out and rips the bodies apart, then feels remorse afterwards and puts them back together." When Alaric asks him what he means, Damon pushes one of the corpses with his foot, and her head promptly falls off.]]

Not that trope - it\'s not just a chance to complain about relationships you don\'t like and characters deciding to try dating isn\'t close to the Drama and Destiny needed for that trope

* StrangledByTheRedString - Bonnie and Jeremy. They've never interacted or showed interest in each other for almost 1.5 seasons, and then suddenly and inexplicably start getting cozy; moreover, Bonnie's speech to Jeremy when they did hook up was basically summed up in "You're hot. Let's try this." The writers are clearly trying to sell the relationship, and the actors have pretty good chemistry, but it definitely could use some better build-up and overall writing.

Nowhere close to an example of that trope

** Killing off [[spoiler: Anna]]. She was a fan favourite and there was ''a lot'' more that they could have done with her character.
Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:
Wrong trope - that refers to an ensemble being more popular than the main character, and Damon\'s one of the main characters anyway

* DesignatedProtagonistSyndrome - [[YourMilageMayVary many, many]] fans find Damon far more interesting and sympathetic than Stefan. If you look on their Character Pages, Damon has over twice as many entries as his little brother.

* CharacterAlignment -
** Stefan: LawfulGood (as he still obeys human morality, even after being turned)
** Elena: NeutralGood (she has her moments of rebellion)
*** Moments of rebellion doesn't make for "Neutral Good". She is "Lawful Good" since she is against killing even other vampires if they don't deserve it, sometimes even if they do deserve it. Indeed [[spoiler: Elena is the opposite of Katherine's utter disregard for anyone in her drive to sacrifice herself to Klaus to save her friends and family.]]
** Damon: ChaoticEvil or ChaoticNeutral (depending on what mood he's in)
** Caroline: ChaoticGood (she often takes things into her own hands without consulting [[FiveManBand the group]])
*** She is improving greatly. She was a vital and effective team player in both ''Katherine'' and ''By the light of the Moon''. She was actually more reliable than Elena.
** Bonnie: LawfulNeutral (does her best to stay out of vampire problems)
** Kathering: ChaoticEvil (though she seems to be drifting to ChaoticNeutral with all the 'self-preservation')
*** But at any price no matter who gets hurt, vampire or human or werewolf, which makes it ChaoticEvil.
** Tyler: TrueNeutral (he'll probably choose a side at some point)
** Rose: ChaoticNeutral (she looks out for herself)
** Uncle John: LawfulEvil (mostly)

* BetterThanItSounds - The show. When news first broke this book series was being turned into a TV show, most people thought it was just another attempt of capitalizing on vampires' [[{{Twilight}} sudden]] [[TrueBlood popularity]]. However, just four or five episodes in people started to realise the series had far more depth than originally thought, having far more likable and fleshed out characters and a much more compelling mythology than anyone - at least non-book fans - imagined.
** "Vampires in high school and the girls that love them" sounds like a {{Twilight}} ripoff, and ripping off Twilight is scraping the bottom of the barrel... but the characters are surprisingly low on {{Wangst}}, the vampires have senses of humor, PoorCommunicationKills is frequently threatened - and then averted within the episode.

* JerkassWoobie - Poor Damon may
be developed, Elena starts to grow lacking in morals, but he has had a backbone, Vicki's turned, really terrible time of it over the past 100+ years (a lot of which is labelled as being Stefan's fault, with [[IHateYouVampireDad some justification.]] He's also constantly treated with mistrust and we find hatred by most of the other characters, particularly Elena, Katherine, Bonnie, and even his own brother. He does definitely fit the "jerkass" part of JerkassWoobie, but at this point it's increasingly clear that it's a vicious cycle; other characters insist Damon needs to make amends, Damon tries to make amends, Damon's amends are ignored or belittled, Damon lashes out Mystic Falls isn't much better in a way that is fatal to someone, other characters insist Damon needs to make amends...
** Katherine is also straying dangerously close to this territory, especially with the way she [[spoiler:pleaded for Damon to let her out when he sealed her inside the tomb with every intention of letting her starve.]]

* AdaptationDisplacement: At least on {{Wikipedia}}; [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vampire_Diaries looking up]] ''The Vampire Diaries'' over there will bring up the TV show, with a link for the book series at the top of the page.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation - Damon. Is he really [[ObviouslyEvil that evil]] or just [[LoveMakesYouEvil a victim of love]]?
** Considering that Damon is a serial rapist and serial killer, this is DracoInLeatherPants all the way.
*** Most male-and for that matter female-vampires are like this given their disregard for human life. {Isobell Stalzman} is an obvious example.
** Some of the episodes have also hinted at BlueAndOrangeMorality for Damon; this theory has been adopted by some of the fandom.
* AngstWhatAngst - Jeremy, after [[spoiler: Vicki dies, after Anna dies, not so much after Bonnie turns him down]]. Justified, since Elena asked Damon to make it so he wouldn't worry about her. However, at this point Jeremy stops angsting about any number of things, stops doing drugs, and becomes a good student. Elena confronts Damon about it. Damon just says he "[[LiteralGenie took away his suffering]]."
* BadassDecay - Noticeably averted with Damon. If anything, the softer side he occasionally exhibits in Season 2 makes him ''even more'' badass.
* BetterThanItSounds - The show. ** Not to mention that the high school setting is barely seen after the first couple episodes.
*** Perhaps things are happening after school hours, on weekends, holidays and in the summer. Still we do see the high school, recently after Tyler's curse is activated and is frustrated and Caroline had to overpower him in the school parking lot.

** Alaric - just about the only non-useless adult. So popular, he has become a regular.
** Caroline - has always been one due to her DeadpanSnarker nature and endearing ditziness, but her popularity really skyrocketed when she [[spoiler: was turned]], making her possibly the most competent good female on the show.

Added DiffLines:

* ShipMates - The Damon/Elena shippers frequently ship Matt/Caroline and Stefan/Bonnie. This not only keeps Matt and Stefan away from Elena, but also shoots down any possibilities of Damon hooking up with Caroline again or showing any interest in Bonnie, despite the hints for that pairing in the books. Though the HeartwarmingMoments between Stefan and Caroline since she became a vampire have led to an increase in the popularity of that pairing; Katherine and Stefan has also grown in popularity.
* ShipToShipCombat - The main shipping war is Stefan/Elena vs. Damon/Elena vs. Damon/Bonnie, but there's also quite a bit of conflict between the Damon/Elena shippers and the Damon/Caroline fans. The Jeremy/Bonnie ship has a contingent as well as a Luca/Bonnie one.
** Now Katherine's back, expect to see Katherine/Stefan vs. Katherine/Damon added to the mix.
** There has been an increase in Damon/Caroline since she's [[spoiler: been turned]] and so is now more than capeable of sticking up for herself.
** Don't forget Damon/Rose and Caroline/Tyler.....
