** Noticeably averted with Damon. If anything, the softer side he occasionally exhibits in Season 2 makes him ''even more'' badass. Although he's only ever held his own in a fight with humans, and vegetarian-vampire brother Stefan (sometimes) and he's been beaten by every other supernatural creature he's fought with (par the hybrids he killed and [[KickTheDog Lexi]], but those were more surprise attacks that a battle of strength) Elijah, Klaus, Katherine, Caroline, Stefan (occasionally) etc. Really the only fair fight that he has even won was against Kol, but it's.... [[SmallNameBigEgo Kol]], so....

** The reason for Stefan's mission to get the [[spoiler:vampirism cure to cure Elena with,]] is he doing this because he's a caring boyfriend seeking to free her and himself from the curse that has been thrust upon both of them so they can live HappilyEverAfter, or is Stefan doing this because he's a clingy, controlling stalker that just wants Elena to go back to the way she was pre-vamprism because he just can't stand that she's changing into a different, perhaps better person?

** "Bloodstream" by Stateless in the season one finale, when Damon kisses Elena. [[spoiler: Except it's Katherine.]]
** "I Was Wrong" by Sleeperstar in 2x08 when Damon tells Elena [[spoiler: that he loves her, and then makes her forget.]]
** Damon and Elena scenes get this ''a lot.'' Another highlight has to be "Never Let Me Go" by Florence+the Machine in 3x19 when [[spoiler: Elena kisses Damon and they have an extended and passionate kiss scene.]]

** Caroline - has always been one due to her DeadpanSnarker nature and endearing ditziness, but her popularity really skyrocketed when she [[spoiler: was turned]], making her possibly the most competent good female on the show.
** Kol - Big time. A charming, charismatic psychopath with some of the best lines on the show. What's not to love? Ever since [[spoiler: Elena and Jeremy killed him, fans have been crying out for a resurrection.]]
** Anna - though it didn't save her from [[TyrantTakesTheHelm Uncle John]], It did however, [[spoiler: bring her back in the third season, and led to her receiving a less depressing end to her story this time, finally reunited with her mother.]]

** Rebekah. It's painfully clear by now that her AlphaBitch personality is a big cover for her deep fear of being left alone and unloved, given how much her family keeps stabbing each other in the back -- and now that her own ''mother'' [[spoiler: has possessed her body and teamed up with Dark Alaric to massacre the Originals (and thus kill every vampire alive), God only knows if she'll make it out in one piece]]. When she does get her body back, she has to clean after a dance that she organized but didn't get to attend because of her mother. Who didn't want to give her a hug after that?

** With Season 4, Elena definitely qualifies. The fanbase has all but completely turned on her when [[spoiler: she helped kill Kol and, for all purposes, committed a mass vampire Genocide. The way she broke things off with Stefan and got with Damon certainly didn't help (even if she was sired to him).]]
** Damon in parts of season four and almost all of season five. Many fans turned sour against Damon and found him to be extremely unlikeable, especially after he became the main love interest for Elena. Some fans say that Damon became boring and dull since he became Elena's boyfriend. There's also the fact that he treated his brother Stefan poorly, especially regarding the whole Elena situation. Also, the fact that he did not look for Stefan over the summer or months that he was missing and did not seem to show too much concern over Stefan suffering from PTSD. Add onto the fact that after "Elena" had broken up with him, Damon resorted to [[spoiler: killing Aaron, a friend of Elena's and resorting to hurting or torturing Elena's loved ones to get back at Elena, primarily Jeremy.]]

The Heretics. Full stop.stop because they mostly serve as the arc villains for the first half of the season and two of them get killed off in their debut episode. Then by the end of the season all of them are dead with the final one being PutOnABus.
** Nora and Mary Louise when you consider that Nora was starting to become friends with Bonnie and was helping out later in the season. Because of this she could have made a good ally to the main characters and they could have had Mary as the wild card just like she was during the season as it is shown that she didn't trust them. In general it also would have been good to see their relationship explored more as their backstory of being lesbian vampire/witch hybrids who had to hide not just their relationship but what they are through the centuries would have been an interesting plot to explore more and also to have seen them adjust to modern society more which could have included one or both of them dating other people because of society being more tolerate of homosexuality.

** Rebekah is an original vampire who longs to be a normal human and clings to any sense of humanity she can find. Not only that, but she's used and betrayed on a regular basis; even by her own family. Her father, mother, and older brother have all attempted to kill her. Her mother [[spoiler: actually took over her body at one point.]] She's stabbed in the back by a girl she begins to finally open up to. And to top it all off, [[spoiler: Elena has murdered two of Rebekah's brothers: Finn and Kol.]] You don't get much more Woobie-ish than that!

** [[BigBad Markos]] from season five is the leader of the Travelers, a subculture of witches restrained from using magic. Markos planned on undoing that spell along with every spell ever cast by a witch, [[FantasticRacism viewing their magic as an abomination and his own as pure]]. Centuries ago, he enacted a curse so that certain generations of the descendants of [[MonsterProgenitor Silas and Amara]] would be their exact {{doppelganger}}s, brainwashed into being drawn together, so he could use their blood for the Travelers' ritual; even before he is resurrected, he orders the death of Stefan's completely innocent doppelganger, Tom Avery, just so Stefan and Elena will be the only ones left. He allows his [[UndyingLoyalty most loyal minion]], [[TheDragon Sloane]] to dies just to demonstrate the result of his curse; begins the destruction of the Other Side, an afterlife for supernatural creatures, causing its denizens to start hurtling into the void, and comes at the price of [[WeHaveReserves the sacrifice of his own minions]]; later abducts and tortures Stefan and Elena for more of their blood; leads the Travelers in a mass ritual to [[GrandTheftMe possess the population of Mystic Falls]], destroying their original bodies to make the change permanent; tries to unleash an anti-magic field [[OmnicidalManiac that would have killed every vampire on the planet]]. In the season finale, Markos has Tyler/Julian killed, after learning that [[YouHaveFailedMe Julian killed Stefan when Stefan was still useful to them]]. When Markos suspects a plot to kill him, he keeps Caroline's mother Sheriff Forbes [[TakingYouWithMe close to him, and pins her down in his dying moments]]. After his death, he attempts to resurrect himself by forcibly passing through Bonnie, which again would have risked ''her'' death. While most villains on this show have honorable or sympathetic qualities, Markos has none, [[TheUnfettered only caring about his his goal and going to any lengths and depths to achieve it]].
** Season 6ís BigBad is [[CardCarryingVillain Malachai "Kai" Parker]], a young and bloodthirsty [[EvilSorcerer witch]] with constant murder on the brain. In his past, Kai was denied the chance to preform the merge ritual with his twin sister Jo and lead the Gemini Coven, and retaliates by gleefully [[CainAndAbel killing his other siblings]], making his [[WouldHurtAChild youngest siblings Luke and Liv]] his primary targets. Spending years in a prison world, Damon and Bonnie soon arrive, and Kai torments them until he escapes that world, leaving Bonnie behind. Intending to hunt Luke and Liv down, Kai promises to continue his murder spree on innocent people. Siphoning leftover magic from the Travelers, Kai experiments by [[ColdBloodedTorture torturing Elena]], as the humans he tortures eventually dies. He eventually comes up on top of the merge, but kills Luke in the process. Kai later teams up with vampire/witch hybrids, and helps them escape their own prison before attacking Jo and Alaric's wedding, killing Jo and her unborn babies. Kai kills himself to complete his transformation into a Heretic, and so that the Gemini Coven will die with him. His final act of cruelty is linking Bonnie to a comatose Elena, so that Elena can only awaken with Bonnie's death. While he goes through a phase of empathy and regret, it was only the result of Luke's soul merging with Kai's, and Kai gets over it. Incapable of feeling real emotions, Kai's [[FauxAffablyEvil charm]] only thinly veils this deranged warlock, who does what he does because he "likes being a [[TheSociopath sociopath]]."
** Julian from season 7 stands out as an especially evil vampire in this series, constantly spending his time murdering and manipulating. Julian is Lily Salvatore's lover and father figure to the Heretics, whom he sees as personal pawns. In his first episode Julian discovers that Valerie is pregnant with Stefan's baby and [[WouldHitAGirl beats her into a miscarriage]], silently taunting her as she recovers. When resurrected, he compels multiple people from other towns into filling up the school and restaurants as a constant and living blood bank. To protect himself, Julian links his life to Lily's. When Lily sees through him, Julian tries to force Lily to either kill Damon or Valerie, taunting that he unlinked their lives when Lily stakes herself. Julian later uses a mystical dagger to entrap Stefan and Damon in their personal hells. Julian also kills off mall employees at a neighboring town. When Stefan and Damon return, it's discovered that Julian has built an chaotic vampire army that has completely taken over Mystic Falls, which Julian uses to feed off and torment the human population. Julian also holds a gladiatorial fight club where [[GladiatorGames contestants fight to the death for his amusement]], in which he has a suicidal Damon take part in, before fighting Damon himself. It's also revealed he's behind the vampire hunter Raina, having [[StartOfDarkness forced the girl to kill her father]]. Julian doesn't even have the humanity switch to excuse him, being outright stated to have been born evil.
