** Also all the vampire characters invoke this trope when they "turn off their humanity" as this is what Elena and Caroline did when Elena's brother died and Caroline's mother died because they didn't want to feel the pain of losing their loved one.

** Damon, so much. He definitely crossed it in season five when it is revealed that [[spoiler: he murdered Aaron's parents and every generation of Whitmore but one for years as revenge for being captured and experimented on. The truly despicable part is that he killed the last one only a few months ago meaning that he lied to Elena and his bloodlust and sociopathic nature are still very much alive. Even Elena, who has put up an extremely impressive wall of denial about him, is absolutely horrified]].

*** Damon pretty much zig-zagged this trope throughout the series because of his HeelFaceRevolvingDoor where in this he has killed Jeremy who only survived because of the Gilbert ring, murdered Aaron when he thought Elena broke up with him, and has generally came close to killing Stefan and the rest of the gang on several occasions.
*** In Season 8 he crosses it again when he murders [[spoiler:Tyler]] while he is under Sybil's control.

* OpinionMyopia: Some of the fans can't acknowledge when a character they like has raped another and they try to make up excuses as to why it's not rape, when compulsion is actually mind rape, no matter how nicely you try to put it. Forcing somebody down a bed while said person is crying, then manipulate this person's mind to have her be okay with you forcing her is rape.

* OpinionMyopia: Some of the fans can't acknowledge debate when a character they like has raped another and they try to make up excuses as to why it's not rape, when rape like for example stating that the sex was consensual before the compulsion. Though of course the other argument is that compulsion is actually mind rape, no matter how nicely you try to put it. Forcing rape and also forcing somebody down a bed while said person is crying, then manipulate this person's mind to have her be okay with you forcing being a sociopath vampire that drinks your blood is technically rape since her free will was taken and so she is rape.not truly consenting to continuing to sleep with you.

** Lexi who in her debut episode is killed by Damon as her friendship with Stefan was interesting and she could have been a good ally, though she does make appearances in flashbacks and makes guest appearances as a ghost until moving on in the afterlife.
** In the season 2 finale Jenna, who's just become the last major character to learn about the {{Masquerade}}, is turned into a vampire herself. And is just as quickly killed off, rather than the multitudes of story possibilities that could have come from it.

** Caroline. Caroline. Caroline. [[spoiler: Right after Katherine makes her a vampire in ''Brave New World''.]]
** Which isn't to say she didn't get a head start on this one. Her dad abandoned her, she and her mother don't get along, she is constantly finding it difficult to fit in with her friends and is constantly overshadowed by Elena, she is abused and discarded by Damon and her boyfriend neglects her. Really, getting turned was probably the best thing for her.

*** Then of course she later has to deal with her mother getting cancer and not even turning her into a vampire could cure it and when she eventually dies, Caroline is so distraught that she turns off her humanity for the first time after her funeral.

*** Culminated when Non-Humanity!Elena tried to kill Bonnie, all the while blaming Bonnie for her own faults. Taken into consideration, Bonnie's 'response' is quite expected. Of course, not long afterwards [[spoiler:she dies anyway in the process of bringing Elena's brother Jeremy back to life, so yeah... ** Damon. Is he really [[ObviouslyEvil that evil]] or just [[LoveMakesYouEvil a victim of love]]? Considering that Damon is a serial rapist and serial killer, this is DracoInLeatherPants all the way. Most male-and for that matter female-vampires are like this given their disregard for human life. [[spoiler:Isobel Saltzman]] is an obvious example. Some of the episodes have also hinted at BlueAndOrangeMorality for Damon; this theory has been adopted by some of the fandom.

However, at this point Jeremy stops angsting about any number of things, stops doing drugs, and becomes a good student. Elena confronts Damon about it. Damon just says he "[[LiteralGenie took away his suffering]]."

** In the seventh season, Rayna wanted to kill Stefan and trap him inside the stone no matter what. So, she tricked Damon in rescinding his offer of taking his place by reminding him that he wouldn't be with Elena as a result of the switch. It may have been her way of getting what she wanted, and she was angry that Damon was getting in the way of that. [[spoiler: This may also be the real reason she tricked everyone later on and gave her powers and urges to kill vampires to Bonnie, as punishment for her mission being ruined.]]

** Noticeably averted with Damon. If anything, the softer side he occasionally exhibits in Season 2 makes him ''even more'' badass. Although he's only ever held his own in a fight with humans, and vegetarian-vampire brother Stefan (sometimes) and he's been beaten by every other supernatural creature he's fought with (par the hybrids he killed and [[KickTheDog Lexi]], but those were more surprise attacks that a battle of strength) Elijah, Klaus, Katherine, Caroline, Stefan (occasionally) etc. Really the only fair fight that he has even won was against Kol, but it's.... [[SmallNameBigEgo Kol]], so....

** The reason for Stefan's mission to get the [[spoiler:vampirism cure to cure Elena with,]] is he doing this because he's a caring boyfriend seeking to free her and himself from the curse that has been thrust upon both of them so they can live HappilyEverAfter, or is Stefan doing this because he's a clingy, controlling stalker that just wants Elena to go back to the way she was pre-vamprism because he just can't stand that she's changing into a different, perhaps better person?

** With Season 4, Elena definitely qualifies. The fanbase has all but completely turned on her when [[spoiler: she helped kill Kol and, for all purposes, committed a mass vampire Genocide. The way she broke things off with Stefan and got with Damon certainly didn't help (even if she was sired to him).]]
** Damon in parts of season four and almost all of season five. Many fans turned sour against Damon and found him to be extremely unlikeable, especially after he became the main love interest for Elena. Some fans say that Damon became boring and dull since he became Elena's boyfriend. There's also the fact that he treated his brother Stefan poorly, especially regarding the whole Elena situation. Also, the fact that he did not look for Stefan over the summer or months that he was missing and did not seem to show too much concern over Stefan suffering from PTSD. Add onto the fact that after "Elena" had broken up with him, Damon resorted to [[spoiler: killing Aaron, a friend of Elena's and resorting to hurting or torturing Elena's loved ones to get back at Elena, primarily Jeremy.]]

** Nora and Mary Louise when you consider that Nora was starting to become friends with Bonnie and was helping out later in the season. Because of this she could have made a good ally to the main characters and they could have had Mary as the wild card just like she was during the season as it is shown that she didn't trust them. In general it also would have been good to see their relationship explored more as their backstory of being lesbian vampire/witch hybrids who had to hide not just their relationship but what they are through the centuries would have been an interesting plot to explore more and also to have seen them adjust to modern society more which could have included one or both of them dating other people because of society being more tolerate of homosexuality.
