** Noticeably averted with Damon. If anything, the softer side he occasionally exhibits in Season 2 makes him ''even more'' badass. Although he's only ever held his own in a fight with humans, and vegetarian-vampire brother Stefan (sometimes) and he's been beaten by every other supernatural creature he's fought with (par the hybrids he killed and [[KickTheDog Lexi]], but those were more surprise attacks than a battle of strength) Elijah, Klaus, Katherine, Caroline, Stefan (occasionally) etc.

[[SmallNameBigEgo Kol]], so....

** Kol's got his share of fangirls as well.

** Kol's got his share of fangirls as well.well, despite having no moments that indicate he has a good bone in his body.

* ShipsThatPassInTheNight: There is a fandom for Kol Mikaelson and April Young despite the two having never met. Kol also gets this with Anna, but it's at least possible that those two crossed paths considering their ages.

* AdaptationDisplacement: At least on {{Wikipedia}}; [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vampire_Diaries looking up]] ''The Vampire Diaries'' over there will bring up the TV show, with a link for the book series at the top of the page.

* CreatorsPet: Hayley, a character despised by the fans that is being carried over to the spinoff. Surprising though, said spinoff has made her quite a bit more favorable to many of her haters.

** [[spoiler: Katherine Pierce in the show's finale.]] Touted as the "baddest bitch of all", she comes BackFromTheDead as a new ruler of Hell and the FinalBoss, only to be easily defeated after spending the whole episode getting stabbed, dying, and coming back to life again. Particularly jarring, seeing how in the past she's been much stronger as a vampire than as a ''friggin queen of Hell''.

** Katherine of Season 5, the fact that the writers refuse to let her go away or die has irritated a number of people as has [[spoiler: her possessing Elena]]. And now that Katherine is not only dead, but got DraggedOffToHell, the fandom has been divided even further. Either Katherine got what was coming to her, or it was a case of DisproportionateRetribution.

* ActorShipping: Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev. Though it has died down considerably after they broke up- and ''especially'' after some disparaging things Ian said about Delena and Nina's potential return to the show.

Added DiffLines:

** The series finale has a few, but especially "Don't Let Me Go," by The Fray playing while [[spoiler: Stefan reveals that he is dead, having sacrificed himself for Damon, and is reunited in death with Lexi.]] "I was feeling epic," indeed.

Added DiffLines:

* DesignatedVillain: A mild case. While fans are well aware that Katherine has done ''terrible'' things, after giving Katherine a very tragic backstory, sympathetic motivations, and quite a few PetTheDog moments, a lot of fans feel it's a bit too much of the show to have ''created HELL just to send her there,'' and then also [[OffScreenMomentOfAwesome have her somehow manipulate Cad into making Katherine the queen of Hell without ever even hinting as to how she did it.]]

** Damon. Is he really [[ObviouslyEvil that evil]] or just [[LoveMakesYouEvil a victim of love]]? Considering that Damon is a serial rapist and serial killer, this is DracoInLeatherPants all the way. Most male-and for that matter female-vampires are like this given their disregard for human life. Isobel Saltzman is an obvious example. Some of the episodes have also hinted at BlueAndOrangeMorality for Damon; this theory has been adopted by some of the fandom.

Added DiffLines:

** In the eighth season, Damon spends half of it mind controlled by Sybil on both a conscious and subconscious level. This causes quite the snarl as to just how much of his behavior can be attributed to that, Damon just being Damon, or a combination of the two.
