* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The first recorded instance of Americans getting poisoned by fugu occurred shortly after the episode. The victims survived thanks to getting put on life support and being treated on time. Here, Hibbert refuses to even ''trace'' the poison, not realizing Homer is perfectly fine.

* HilariousInHindsight: When he believes he dying, Homer tells Mr. Burns to TakeThisJobAndShoveIt, and a deleted scene would have shown Homer having to [[CrossingTheBurntBridge go back to work and apologize to Mr. Burns when he hadn't died]]. Season 6's "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS6E13AndMaggieMakesThree And Maggie Makes Three]]" would show Homer having to do the same things when Maggie was born.

Idiot Plot is now a definition-only page.

* IdiotPlot: Despite the poignant aftermath, the setup for Homer's supposedly terminal diagnosis is brought about by repeated incompetence. He requests Fugu at the sushi restaurant, borishly ignoring all warnings against it (also leaving questions why it's even on the menu in the first place if the staff do not trust themselves to prepare it safely). Due to head chef being absent and Homer stifling his stand-in further, the Fugu is seemingly misprepared, and Dr Hibbert completely misdiagnoses the expected effects.

* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt: Even when the episode first came out, fans doubted that Homer, one of the most iconic cartoon protagonists of the late 80s/early 90s, would actually die halfway through the season. Sure enough, [[DisneyDeath he's still alive by the end]].

* TearDryer: Homer believes he has 24 hours to live after eating a bad blowfish, and near the end, he seems to pass away in the middle of the night. Marge is devastated...but then she notices his drool is warm, which means he's alive.
