*** King Triton was deliberately made to misunderstand the fact that not all humans are barbarians, so it's safe to say that Ariel's motives for "disobeying" her father are [[YourMileageMayVary more or less]] justifiable. Thus, Ariel's DealWithTheDevil didn't entirely help her get her man. In case you've forgotten, towards the end, King Triton realizes that not all humans are the same and decides to make Ariel permanently. So I guess you could say that the most major theme intended here is peace.

*** And in Ariel's defense, regarding the points referring to her disobeying her father, King Triton simply refused to understand that not all humans are like what her repeatedly refers to them as, thus marking this an example of how some parents aren't always right. [[ThisIsReality It's quite common in real life, you know]].

** Don't forget that because Ariel needs help more than once, she's also a stupid and whore-ish FauxActionGirl. Nevermind that if not for her Eric would be dead, to start. Apparently if a lady isn't invincible, she's always open for bashing and hate coming from people who call themselves "concerned feminists".

Added DiffLines:

* RealWomenNeverWearDresses: For many "feminists", Ariel is not a "good role mode" because she ''gasp'' actually wants a man. People disregard the fact that she saved Eric herself from a storm on her own and that she was interested in the human world long before Eric came along (which ''gasp'' also was in the original source!). The song "Part of That World" is sung '''before''' Eric is introduced. She even gets criticised for disobeying her father when a good part of the mess was '''his''' fault, since in when he was in OverprotectiveDad mode he [[KickTheDog kicked the undersea puppy]] by destroying her little corner in which she had all the human keepsakes. Forget that she tries to fight Ursula to save her father ''even when she was in physical disadvantage'' due to being in mermaid shape while not under the sea, as well as all the brave things she does in the TV series and sequel, because she wanted to find romantic love among other things, she cannot be feminist.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop:
** It was Hal Sparks in the "I Love the 80's 3-D" [=VH1=] special who put it best:
-->"And the lovely little moral of this story is: Girls, give up your voice so you can have legs that you can spread for your man. ...What!?"
** Also, Ariel essentially disobeys her father's every command, runs away from home and makes a DealWithTheDevil, all to snag herself a husband. And they marketed this movie towards young girls!
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8xCgC3w1zs "If you have a father that loves you, run away from him!"]]
*** Fathers that destroy all your prized possessions, because they love you.
** The oft-cited "throw away your life for some stranger" moral was actually meant to be ''averted'' by the movie; the writers noticed it in the original story and decided to give Ariel a fascination with human culture so she ''already'' kind of wanted to be human before she even met the guy. Eric just tipped the balance.

Added DiffLines:

* BadassDecay: Eric and Triton in both the sequel and musical.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Chef Louis and his musical number, "Les Poissons".
** {{YMMV}}: since looking at the song one can see from where King Triton gets his prejudice of humans as barbarious fisheaters. Note that while preparing the fish Louis not only sings about cooking but also goes in detail about chopping up & basically mutilating their bodies to his pleasure much to the disgust of Sebastrian. While we may not think too much about that scene, we can see why Triton or any other merfolk would consider HumansAreBastards.

Added DiffLines:

* GenreTurningPoint: Started the Animation Renaissance.
* GirlsNeedRoleModels: Ariel was created as a RebelliousPrincess in part because of this, especially compared to her predecessors in the canon. Then all her male supporting characters protect her and save the day, creating something of a BrokenAesop. ''Return to the Sea'' overcompensated for this -- Ariel and Melody got all the action scenes while the [[CharacterDerailment previously heroic and capable men]] [[BadassDecay were pretty much helpless.]]

Added DiffLines:

* MissedMomentOfAwesome: A deleted draft detailing an alternate version of the ending had Ariel and Flounder trying to rush to the wedding barge only for Glut (the shark from earlier in the film who got stuck in an anchor ring) to ambush them, causing Flounder to gain a second wind, deliver an already exhausted Ariel to the ship, and bait Glut into chasing him with the barrel still lassoed onto his back (hint: it's actually a gunpowder barrel), causing Glut to bite the barrel and get caught in an explosion.

* EpilepticTrees: In ''TheDaVinciCode'', author DanBrown puts forth the theory that the directors and animators were pagan goddess worshippers and scattered clues and obscure references to the "Sacred Feminine" throughout the film, including Ariel's red hair. The reality is far less mystical though: the animators chose to make Ariel a redhead to avoid comparisons with Darryl Hannah's blonde mermaid character from ''{{Splash}}'', and also because it gave a nice contrast with the blue sea and her green tail.

** It's not actually very noticeable (because your voice does change as you age), but the actor who provided the voice of Grimsby was actually the same one who provided the voice of Roger, Pongo's "human pet" in Disney's ''101 Dalmatians'' a few decades earlier. He commented in an interview later that when he went to audition, none of the people he talked to had any idea who he was.
