** Well, on the "genuinely caring for Rapunzel" part, the film strongly implies that Gothel directs said adulation towards the ''hair'', and transitively, her own youth. Also, while Gothel seems to (understandably) maintain Thanatophobia, the film continuously alludes to her much more prominent obsession with youth and beauty; hence, the mirror in the tower wherein she may keep a watchful eye upon her appearance and her subsequent frenzies upon noticing wrinkling skin or graying hair whither she frantically bequeaths Rapunzel to sing the youth-restoring spell. She encapsulates this behavior in this line to Rapunzel during which she nurses her own ego and vituperates the young princess: "Look in that mirror. I see a strong, confident, ''beautiful'' young lady. Oh, look you're here, too. Mahahahaha." Then she habitually uses the JustJokingJustification to dismiss her pervasive denigration of Rapunzel, which merely reiterates her apparent concern for her "daughter" and simultaneously accentuates the subtle, sinister, and rather distressing facets of their relationship. Not only does Gothel exploit Rapunzel, but she uses degradation to reign over (watch she sees as) her reservoir of youth. Conclusively, Gothel perceives aging as more of a pique than an outright issue of fatality, and kidnaps and verbally abuses the princess to satisfy her incorrigible vanity.

* CharacterAlignment: Rapunzel is NeutralGood, as she is sweetness and life itself. Flynn is starts as TrueNeutral (maybe even NeutralEvil) since he is selfish and only works for himself, but grows into ChaoticGood. [[spoiler: The Pub Thugs are]] also ChaoticGood. Maximus is LawfulGood, though he grows less lawful after he realizes Flynn really loves Rapunzel. Gothel is textbook NeutralEvil, since her selfishness is taken UpToEleven in terms of her emotional abuse and her protectiveness of the flower's power. The Stabbington brothers are probably ChaoticEvil.
