** Due to missing both of your party's main healers at the time, Captain Schwann puts up an extremely tough fight as well.

** The [[BonusBoss Sprial Draco]] in the PS3 re-release. It's a BonusBoss, but it's so powerful that you'll only beat it through spamming cheap attacks.

* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: One of Rita's character traits is smacking the 12-year-old Karol on the head, often without provocation, which is played for laughs. Admittedly she's only a few years older herself but she's still beating up a child.

** Sodia also tends to get a lot of hate, mostly due to [[spoiler:stabbing Yuri at the end of part 2. To be fair, she ''instantly'' regrets it.]] In her case, it doesn't help that many view her as a [[{{Clingy Jealous Girl}} Clingy Jealous Fangirl]].

* Also the waiter minigame it's quite ridiculous when they order about 50 dishes and cancel another 100 when you're doing it as raven.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop - It is arguable whether or not Yuri's actions are for the greater good. [[TheyPlottedAPerfectlyGoodWaste Then again, raising that debate was the whole point of the game]]... [[GreenAesop until the plot shifts towards global warming]].

** Rita and Estelle have some pretty big LesYay moments too.

* InferredHolocaust - Zig-zagged with [[spoiler:Aspio. When Tarqaron is raised from the mountains, the city is destroyed in the resulting earthquake during the process. Although we see that many of the scholars evacuated to other nearby towns, considering that it happened on what must have been really short notice, there were undoubtedly casualties]].
* InternetBackdraft - Mainly over Yuri's alleged hypocrisy, Estelle's usefulness, and the vast number of {{PS3}} extras and whether or not the 360 version was stripped down. Expect lots of FanDumb on all sides.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks - A frequent criticism tossed at ''Vesperia'' was how it's too similiar to previous TalesSeries entries, particularly borrowing quite a number of elements from the last mothership game released in America, ''VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss''.
** TheyChangedItSoItSucks: Another common complaint is that the story is just too ''different'' to previous games in the series, being more in-line with games like ''FinalFantasy''. Because the game doesn't flesh out its villains anywhere near as much as past installments, most of them come across as purely in it ForTheEvulz. The whole "OrderVersusChaos" sideplot, which was advertised as the game's central story element, is eventually dropped for a GreenAesop borrowed wholesale from ''FinalFantasyVII''.
* LesYay - Estelle and Rita give off a very strong RomanticTwoGirlFriendship vibe, what with Rita constantly fretting and worrying over Estelle's safety and [[DeclarationOfProtection how protective]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5lciiqp5Oo she becomes of her]] as the game progresses. And while it seems one-sided from Rita's end, there's scenes such as them sleeping in the same bed at the inn, and in a later scene, Estelle falls asleep at the foot of Rita's bed while watching over her.

** One sidequest shows the group at the time (Yuri, Karol, Rita, Estelle, and Repede, the last of which is nowhere to be seen at the time) resting in an inn. On three beds. Guess who are ''sleeping in the same bed together.'

** Possibly [[spoiler: Raven]], when he kidnaps [[spoiler: Estelle]] for [[spoiler: Alexei]] and then fights the party so the villain can make his escape, unless you believe that he sufficiently [[RedemptionEarnsLife redeemed]] himself afterwards.

* PlayerPunch - No matter how much you saw that DistressedDamsel trope coming, it just gets [[TearJerker worse]] and [[BrainwashedAndCrazy worse]].
* [[spoiler: {{Roaring Rampage Of Revenge}}]]: [[spoiler: The Enduring Shrine of Zaude, and the boss fight with Alexei, could be seen as this for Estelle.]]

* ShipTease: It seems like there are ships all over the place in this game. [[HoYay Yuri/Flynn]], [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys Yuri/Estelle]], [[BattleCouple Yuri/Judith]], [[SwordAndSorcerer Yuri/Rita]], [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan Estelle/Flynn]], [[LesYay Estelle/Rita]], [[{{Tsundere}} Rita/Raven]], [[TheTease Judith]]/[[DirtyOldMan Raven]], [[PuppyLove Karol/Nan]] (and one-sided ship-teasing with [[AccidentalPervert Karol]]/[[TheTease Judith]]), [[InterspeciesRomance Don Whitehorse/Belius]], [[TheMourningAfter Duke/Elucifer]]. Plus the off-screen triangle between [[LoveTriangle Yeager/Casey/Raven]]. If you can think it up, you can probably rustle up 'evidence' of the ship tease within the game. Someone even tried to suggest there was ship teasing of [[{{Squick}} Estelle/Repede]] in the game.
* TearJerker: [[spoiler:Everything involving Alexei controlling Estelle's power, up to and including the [[SequentialBoss second]] fight against her, fought with just Yuri and a heartbreaking simplistic rendition of ''Ring A Bell'' playing in the background. It almost makes you feel like [[LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt he's actually going to kill her]], but thankfully the result is [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming heartwarming]] instead.]]

* Show,Don'tTell: [[spoiler: Tarquaron is a some kind of FantasticNuke/DoomsdayDevice, but no one says what it does and the player will never see it in action. Everyone just says its capable of wiping out humainity.]]

* TheUntwist: Absolutely no one is surprised that Estelle's a princess, save [[IdiotHero Karol.]] Yuri even says outright, during the first visit to the Quoi Woods--long before the reveal in question--that she's a "sheltered little princess".

* WhatAnIdiot - Judith's actions immediately following [[spoiler:Belius' death.]] Not so much what she did, since she had a ''very'' good reason to do so, but how she responded to the party's reactions. [[spoiler:However, the party understands and forgives her when they find her again.]]

* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: One of [[Tsundere Rita's]] character traits is smacking the 12-year-old Karol on the head, often without provocation, which is played for laughs. Admittedly she's not much older herself but still...

** There's a section in Part 2 that is a pain, due to Raven and Estelle being absent from the party, meaning that for healing, you need to rely on items, Karol, or Guardian Field.

** Ragou is the corrupt magistrate of Nor Harbor. Nor Harbor has been experiencing storms, making it hard for the people there to make a living off of the port commerce. To make things worse, Ragou harshly taxes his people. If someone cannot afford his taxes, Ragou sends his mercenaries to take their loved ones (including children) as collateral. He keeps these loved ones in a basement full of monsters. When the heroes confront him over this, he explains that he finds people getting eaten by monsters to be entertaining. Ragou offers only one hope to his people: if they kill a vicious monster and bring back its horn as proof, they will never have to pay taxes again. Of course, this monster would make short work of most people who try to fight it. The heroes eventually discover that the storms around Nor Harbor are created by a [[AppliedPhlebotinum special Blastia]] in Ragou's mansion. He orchestrated the suffering of his people for his own amusement.
** Alexei is the Commandant of the Imperial Knights. However, he betrays his Empire in an attempt to conquer the world. To accomplish this, Alexei orchestrates a genocide of the Entelexeia, the race that protects the world, so he can harvest the powerful apatheia from their corpses. Two of his minions are forced to obey him because he will shut off their artificial hearts at the first sign of defiance. He tortures Estelle, a member of the royal family he was sworn to serve, to force her to use her powers to activate Zaude, an ancient superweapon. Using Estelle for this purpose floods Zaphias, the capital city of the Empire, with deadly aer and vicious monsters.Ragou, Cumore, and [[spoiler: Alexei]]. [[spoiler:Their monstrosity helps to justify [[VigilanteMan Yuri's]] [[TheKillerBecomesTheKilled vigilante actions]]]]. Ragou extorted a town into starvation via heavy taxes, and when the civilians couldn't pay up, he had their children kidnapped and fed to monsters. He also fired on his own ships for daring to try and bring food to the townsfolk. Cumore tricked dozens of peasants into working in brutal slave camps and later sent an incredible number of villagers into the desert on what is a suicide mission looking for a PhysicalGod. [[spoiler:Alexei]] is the worst of them, though. [[spoiler:He kills innocent Entelexeia to obtain the crystals they leave behind on their death, and at one point callously mocks the small size of one of the jewels left behind. He uses these crystals to force [[TheChick Estelle]] into becoming BrainwashedAndCrazy so that he can use her powers (which not only hurts her, but also threatens the ''entire world'' if used too often). He revived Schwann and Yeager from death using [[AppliedPhlebotinum heart blastia]] and forced them to become his slaves and tried to destroy the HubCity of TheEmpire ''that he led''--an act which would kill tens if not hundreds of thousands--as a distraction. Do you hate this guy yet?]]

** Whether or not it's intentional from the programmer's POV, LetsPlay/TippingForties repeatedly points out how Repede ends up being a cutscene-only version of TheFaceless due to the fact that he has no real plot importance and is thus either absent in most cutscenes or barely visible behind most characters or objects to a degree that their LP thread was renamed to reflect to this ("The Repede Obfuscation Station").

*** Speaking of Overlimit, Yuri and Flynn get a skill where whenever one of them enters Overlimit, the other has a chance of going into Overlimit for free as well.

** The PS3 version is also a bit of a BaseBreaker itself. The reason why isn't so much that it exists, it's that the PS3-exclusive content is ''so much'' that some feel that the 360 version was incomplete.

** Estelle can learn a skill called Eternal Support, which gives any buff cast on her a chance to last until the end of the battle or until Estelle is knocked out. Estelle also has an arte called Force Field, which grants temporary invincibility to an ally. Due to an oversight, Eternal Support can work with Force Field and make Estelle completely invincible for the rest of the encounter. This makes her marathon battles (like the Colosseum runs) trivial.

*** Flynn has a skill that allows him to turn his TP into HP. This allows him to survive anything, allowing him to go through some of the more difficult challenges of the game without being in OVL 4.

** Whether or not it's intentional from the programmer's POV, LetsPlay/TippingForties repeatedly points out how Repede ends up being a cutscene-only version of TheFaceless due to the fact that he has no real plot importance and is thus either absent in most cutscenes or barely visible behind most characters or objects to a degree that their LP thread was renamed to reflect to this.

* HilariousInHindsight: In ''VideoGame/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyDualDestinies'', SamRiegel is voicing Phoenix Wright and Creator/TroyBaker is playing a prosecutor who has been sent to jail. This makes it sound like Flynn has finally just taken Yuri to court.
