Both of the "This sucks compared to the previous games" and "You aren't allowed to dislike it just because it's Monkey Island" varieties. But you STILL get comments on any Tales-related Website/YouTube video saying "omg teh 3d sux dey shud scrap all da work theyve done and redo it all in 2d!!!!!" Nevermind that ''this isn't the first 3D Monkey Island game''.

* EpilepticTrees: ''Tales'' is like an incomplete puzzle that invites fans to submit missing pieces: especially regarding the role of the Voodoo Lady in setting the story in motion, and her allegiance and motivation. Also begging to be explained is Elaine's seeming prescience (see "Xanatos Roulette" on the "Video Game" page, made even more puzzling as [[spoiler: she is not in her right mind most of the game]].) -- people even theorise that Elaine has voodoo-like powers.
* EvilIsSexy: Poxed Elaine in Guybrush’s eyes, which makes him wonder if he [[FoeYay secretly craves]] [[{{Squick}} [=LeChuck=]]].
* FauxSymbolism: According to [[http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18337 Telltale Games' forum thread]], there are PLENTY of examples of faux symbolism. They include:

** Let's face it: there's no way anybody bought for a second that [[spoiler:[=LeChuck=] really had a change of heart]]. At least the resulting UnTwist coincided with him pulling himself out of his VillainDecay in one [[MoralEventHorizon good, clean,]] [[spoiler:[[HeroKiller hero-killing]]]] [[MoralEventHorizon stroke]].

* LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt: [[spoiler:Even as cool as Chapter 4 is, did anyone really believe Guybrush would stay KilledOffForReal, especially with that zombie hand running around? Even Morgan's death felt a little too rushed, with a suspicious moment of NeverFoundTheBody.]]
** Of course, the writers were probably smart enough to know this trope would occur, [[TropesAreTools thus allowing the moment to have the]] HolyShitQuotient [[TropesAreTools that it does]]. Yeah, everybody knew they wouldn't really do it, but show us somebody who actually thought they would ''try''.

* HolyShitQuotient: [[WhamEpisode Chapter 4]], to a stronger degree than any other moment in the series. Not only is it revealed that [[spoiler:LeChuck has been faking his HeelFaceTurn the entire game]], but he finally crosses his MoralEventHorizon by [[spoiler: murdering two major characters in cold blood]]. Both deaths are played completely straight, contrasting the DeathIsCheap/BlackComedy way the series treated it before, and bring the comedic tone to a [[MoodWhiplash screeching halt]]. Oh yeah, one last thing: one of those two characters is [[spoiler:'''[[KillTheCutie GUYBRUSH]] [[OurHeroIsDead THREEPWOOD]] [[ShooOutTheClowns HIMSELF'''.]]

* ContestedSequel / SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: The general consensus is that the game, while not quite as good as the first three, is a significant improvement over Escape From Monkey Island.

* CompleteMonster:
** The Marquis De Singe.
** [[spoiler: [=LeChuck=] ascends from AffablyEvil to monster territory in this game for the first time since the second game.]]
** Also, [[spoiler:[=McGillicutty=]]] in Chapter 2, [[spoiler:when he reveals during the ship battle that he is looking for La Esponja Grande only to destroy it in order to remain [[CursedWithAwesome poxed with his crewmates forever]].]] Defused somewhat by him being a HarmlessVillain (though not from lack of trying).

* AngstWhatAngst: Guybrush isn't particularly upset by the loss of his hand. Elaine gets over it pretty quickly herself.
