A hulking, nearly unstoppable arsenal of lethal weapons combined with the mind of a serial killer that breaks free of its coporate controller to wreak havoc makes for a genuine threat. The amazing stop motion effects done to create this metal monstrosity only enhance the fear factor. It is especially [=McDagget=] who crosses the line. He also let the city believe that [=RoboCop=] is a criminal. The last straw was, when the Detroit Police refused to work with the Rehabs to clear out Cadillac Heights, he simply hired some Splatterpunk gangmembers to do the job. ** Bob Morton has a couple of lines early in the movie while they're discussing the RoboCop program that they've "restructured the police department and place prime candidates according to risk factor" and that they'll be ready to start "as soon as some poor schmuck volunteers", essentially saying that they planned to get police officers killed in order to get raw material for RoboCop. There is this rumours by fans that Morton purposely sabotaged ED-209 so he can show off with his project.
** Cain in [=RoboCop=] 2, not only he ruins the entire city with his Nuke Drug, he also complete sick. He just kills whoever is a potential danger for him, not caring about them. The two worst things that Cain had done is the horrible murder of Duffy, and destroying [=RoboCop=] to make him unable. However, after turning into [=RoboCain=], he got worse and ended killing a whole lot of police officers, as well as innocent bystanders.

The Rehabs remove people (men, women, children) out of their houses, with extremely force. Then they put them in Nazi-like camps, even killing people who dare to escape. They were planning to raid into a church with innocents refugees.

** Dick Jones in the first movie is pretty much what happens when a CorruptCorporateExecutive enters this trope.
trope. Selfish like Clarence, he orders Bob Morton to be killed.
** Cain in RoboCop 2, not only he ruins the entire city with his Nuke Drug, he also complete sick. He just kills whoever is a potential danger for him, not caring about them. The two worst things that Cain had done is the horrible murder of Duffy, and after turning into RoboCain, killing a of lot police officers but mostly innocent bystanders.
** The Rehabs in the third film, especially their leader McDagget. No wonder why the rebels calls them "Nazi sons of bitches". The Rehabs remove people (men, women, children) out of their houses, with extremely force. Then they put them in Nazi-like camps, even killing people who dare to escape. They were planning to raid into a church with innocents refugees.
***It is especially McDagget who crosses the line. He also misguides the city by letting them believe that the Rehabs give the people of Old Detroit new houses, while they actually put them in death camps. He also let the city believe that RoboCop is a criminal. The last straw was, when the Detroit Police refused to work with the Rehabs to clear out Caddilac Heights, he simply hired some Splatterpunk gangmembers to do the job. Don't worry, Robo putted them all, especially McDagget, out of their misery for good.
** OCP itself can be seen as a complete monster. The only thing they talk about is their company. If they weren't so stupid, then they wouldn't go bankrupt in the third film.

* WhatAnIdiot: Faxx, you honestly thought it was a good idea to put the mind of the city's greatest drug dealer and a serial killer into the body of a nearly unstoppable robot, all under the pretense that that you think he's under you control as long as he dosen't reach his controls? And her arrogance got countless lives lost in the process.

A hulking, nearly unstoppable arsenal of lethal weapons combined with the mind of a serial killer that breaks free of it's coporate controller to wreak havoc makes for a genuine threat. Also, there's Cain's "Screen Face", complete with an UncannyValley CGI head--sadly not featured in that video.

Move YMMV tropes to YMMV tab.

* AlasPoorVillain: Hob in the second film, though it's of questionable success as the trope is forced by the filmmakers upon a character who would be a CompleteMonster except for the fact that he's only fourteen.
* Anvilicious: FrankMiller, Irvin Kershner and especially Paul Verhoeven are not aiming for subtlety here (in fact, Verhoeven has never even heard of such a concept). The movies gleefully raise Anviliciousness to an art form, bombarding the viewer with DrugsAreBad and Capitalism Is Evil.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: For many kids, the satircal humor went over their heads, rendering all the tv commercials and news spots as something akin to this.

* CrossesTheLineTwice: The scene near the beginning with the demonstration of the ED-209 in the Director's Cut. In the theatrical version, it merely just shoots the executive for a second or two to kill him in a perfunctory manner. In the uncut version, it unloads hundreds of bullets into him with gallons of Main/HighPressureBlood spraying everywhere as the engineers try to disable the robot. The original intent of the film was to make it so outrageously violent you couldn't take it seriously. The studio cut forced out much of the violence so that some scenes ended up a bit more depressing than others.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: The ED-209. Who's a cute widdle stupid Mecha Mook? Yes you are, yes you are! That nigh-unstoppable killing machine had a wide audience as a kids' toy.
* EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory: Paul Verhoeven states that Murphy / Robocop was deliberately conceived as a Christ figure. He dies an incredibly torturous death, gets resurrected, walks on water, and is the people's only hope in this CrapsackWorld. Also, he kicks ass.
