* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: Creator/TimRoth and Creator/MichaelClarkeDuncan are clearly devoted to this film, particularly Roth who gives the role his everything and makes Thade a legitimately compelling and complex villain who is both a loathsome fanatic and a sympathetic figure who honestly believes in what he's doing.

Authority Equals Asskicking has been renamed.

* RootingForTheEmpire: Sure, General Thade is a right bastard who tries to wipe out humanity, but it's easy to admire him for his martial prowess and AuthorityEqualsAsskicking status, devotion to his father's legacy, and ability to actually get shit done compared to the sleazy ape politicians. Plus, unlike the [[DullSurprise dull-eyed hero Leo]] he's at least displaying [[HamAndCheese some enjoyable pathos]].

** The hero trying to pull off "no man left behind" on a chimp. It would be one thing if he was presented as a FriendToAllLivingThings, but instead of that, the movie treats it with all the seriousness of Generic Movie Hero Behavior. The confusion about the fact that it's all about a random trained animal makes it hard to treat the scene seriously.

* DemonicSpiders: practicality all the apes are this due to how hard they hit, their ability to block your attacks, and the fact that they are all over the game.
* GoddamnedBats: The rats, which are small and annoying, but much easier than the apes due to not being able to block.
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: The game was trashed by reviews due to the unfair difficulty, amongst other things.
* ScrappyMechanic:
** The lack of checkpoints or extra lives.
** The combat system due to the apes blocking most attacks while you can't block. Not helped by how much damage they inflict when they hit you.
* ScrappyWeapon: The knife. It doesn't do any more harm than the fists, has a short range, and leaves you open after every third swing.
* VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The opening cinematic is incredibly well detailed. Averted with the in-game graphics.

!!The film

* CompleteMonster (PC[=/=]UsefulNotes/PlayStation version): [[ANaziByAnyOtherName General Ursus]] is the leader of the gorillas and one of the members of the Ape High Council. Seeing gorillas as [[MasterRace superior to other apes]], Ursus discovered that Professor Cornelius managed to find a way to use human DNA to improve the ape genetic code. Forcing Professor Cornelius to work for him and continue his [[PlayingWithSyringes experiments]] on captured humans, Ursus planned to "enhance" the gorillas and create an unbeatable army, which he intended to use it to [[KillAllHumans completely wipe out humanity]] and take over the ape society, while slaughtering any ape who would resist his rule. When [[PlayerCharacter Ulysses]] humiliated him and stole the results of Cornelius's research, Ursus ordered his gorillas to attack a human village and wipe out most of the humans there.

* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: Creator/KevinSmith famously (and half-jokingly) accused Tim Burton of plagiarizing the infamous scene of the monkey's head on the Lincoln memorial from a parody he did of the original ''Apes'' movie in his comic ''Chasing Dogma'' (it also appeared in ''Film/JayAndSilentBobStrikeBack'', released the same year as this film). When asked for comment, Burton gave the uncharacteristically nasty response of "Anyone who knows me knows I've never read a comic book and anyone who ''really'' knows me knows [[TakeThat I would never read anything by Kevin Smith]]." Smith [[InsultBackfire put the second half of this quote on the back of his autobiography]].
